Dylan Shiel banned for one game by AFL tribunal after Luamon Lual-Mark O'Connor incident
Essendon's Dylan Shiel has been banned for one game over the incident that forced his own teammate off the field during their AFL clash with Geelong on Friday. Shiel pushed Geelong's Mark O'Connor as they jostled for position to mark on the wing in the second quarter at Kardinia Park, with O'Connor colliding heavily with Bomber Luamon Lual as he tracked back with the flight of the ball. O'Connor hit the legs of a leaping Lual, who tumbled spectacularly through the air before slamming back to the turf, landing awkwardly on his head and shoulder. Lual jarred his back and had to leave the field in the care of trainers, before returning later in the match. Shiel was referred directly to the tribunal, where the AFL argued Shiel's duty of care with regards to rough conduct was extended to all players, including teammates. Shiel argued he only had eyes for the ball and thought he was pushing O'Connor into open space away from the contest. After a long deliberation, the tribunal ruled Shiel's forceful push on O'Connor was unreasonable and breached his duty of care. He will miss Friday's game against St Kilda at Docklands.

Bombers star sent to tribunal for friendly fire act
Essendon veteran Dylan Shiel is facing a one-match suspension for a push that had "significant potential" to cause injury to teammate Luamon Lual. Shiel was referred directly to the tribunal after pushing Geelong opponent Mark O'Connor in the way of Lual during their 44-point loss to the Cats at GMHBA Stadium on Friday night. An airborne Lual, making an attempt at an intercept mark, tumbled over the top of O'Connor and landed heavily on his head. After a few seconds on the ground, Lual was able to walk himself off the field. The Bombers newcomer returned to the game but was eventually subbed out at three-quarter time. Luamon Lual left the field following this incident involving Mark O'Connor and Dylan Shiel.#AFLCatsDons — AFL (@AFL) August 8, 2025 The incident was deemed rough conduct by the match review officer but not graded. "A suspension of one match is the appropriate penalty having regard to both the impact to O'Connor," a statement by the match review officer said. "And the significant potential that Shiel's teammate, Luamon Lual, could have suffered a serious head or neck injury arising from Shiel's unreasonable conduct, which caused Lual's head and neck to make contact with the ground with force." The match review officer reiterated their position by stating the players owe "a duty of care to all other players, not just their opponents".
