Former school captain and aspiring paramedic accused of raping another boy during Schoolies week

A former Queensland school captain has been charged by police over claims he sexually assaulted a young male during schoolies in 2024. Lucas James Want, 18, is charged with two counts of rape and three counts of sexual assault over the alleged incidents in November 2024. He is yet to enter a plea, reported The Courier Mail. The teenager attended Grace Lutheran College at Rothwell and served as faith and service captain in Year 12. He was arrested in the Brisbane suburb of Margate on November 22, 2024. Schoolies for Queensland students in 2024 got underway just a few days earlier on November 17, 2024. Want is currently enrolled in paramedicine at Queensland University of Technology. He also works part-time as a gaming attendant and bartender at Redcliffe Leagues Club. Want was also a competitive swimmer and competed with Southern Cross swimming club in Scarborough. Appearing in Gympie Magistrates Court, Mr Want's lawyer, Ashton Marini, requested access to the complainant's Cellebrite phone download. Cellebrite software is a system for instant and complete data extraction from mobile device, often used by law enforcement and government agencies. She also requested and QPRIME records of police interactions with witnesses. Mr Marini argued the evidence could be 'potentially relevant' to the case, according to The Courier-Mail. However, police prosecutor Melissa Campbell opposed the request, describing it as a 'fishing expedition'. Handing over a full Cellebrite download, would give Want and his lawyers personal text messages, including those between the complainant and his family. 'What right does my friend (the opposing lawyer) have to see a conversation between a juvenile and their mother from five years ago?' she said. 'It's not relevant to this matter before the court.' Magistrate Bevan Hughes ruled the mobile phone data must be disclosed to the defence, but denied access to the police database records. The matter has been adjourned to October 13.

Former school captain faces court over alleged Schoolies rape and sexual assault charges

A former captain of a prestigious Moreton Bay private school Grace Lutheran College is facing an array of rape and sexual assault charges after allegedly attacking a male during Schoolies of 2024. Lucas James Want, 18, faces two counts of rape and three counts of sexual assault. The offences claimed to have happened across two days in November last year. He was not present at Gympie Magistrates Court on Friday where his lawyer asked for access to the complainant's Cellebrite phone download. The paramedic student has not entered a plea to the charges. He was appointed faith and service captain in Year 12. The 18-year-old is currently studying to be a paramedic at Queensland University of Technology and works as a part-time bartender at Redcliffe Leagues Club. Mr Want was arrested in Margate, just outside Redcliffe, on November 22, 2024. Ashton Marini, the solicitor for Mr Want, also requested Queensland Police Records and Information Management Exchange of police interactions with witnesses in the case. Mr Marini told the court the evidence was 'potentially relevant' to the allegations, the Courier Mail reports. Police Prosecutor Melissa Campbell strongly disagreed to the requests, labelling the defence as a 'fishing expedition'. 'What right does my friend have to see a conversation between a juvenile and their mother from five years ago?' she said. 'It's not relevant to this matter before the court.' Magistrate Ben Hughes denied the QPRIME documents and ordered the phone data to be provided by police. Mr Want's case was adjourned to October 13, 2025. The teenager will be excused from appearing in person at the next mention.
