Iconic Levi's TV ad star Nick Kamen battled secret illness before shock death
Model and singer Nick Kamen, who famously stripped to his boxer shorts in a launderette in a 1980s Levi's advert, died after a three-year battle with an illness he kept secret He's best remembered as Madonna 's protégé and the heartthrob of an iconic Levi's advert where he famously stripped down to his boxers in a launderette. But model and singer Nick Kamen tragically never reclaimed the limelight following his Eighties glory days, passing away aged 59 on 4 May, 2021. The infamous 1985 Levi's ad sees Nick walk into a launderette, to the sound of Marvin Gaye's 1968 classic, I Heard It Through The Grapevine. He then removes his T-shirt, and unbuttons his Levi's 501s, while several women watch on – throwing both in the washing machine. He then takes a seat wearing just his white boxer shorts, with a statement appearing on screen: 'Now available in stonewashed'. The star, who scored a 1986 hit with Each Time You Break My Heart – penned by Madonna herself – died at his Notting Hill, London, home following a gruelling three-year fight against bone cancer. Nick, born Ivor Neville Kamen, was cared for by his devoted partner of 15 years, Lucinda Carey, during his final days, reports OK!. His brother Ronald disclosed that as Nick's condition deteriorated, his breathing became "very shallow" and he sensed his time was running out. "He did fight it very hard," he revealed. In an interview following Nick's passing, Lucinda revealed that despite his ordeal, Nick experienced a "beautiful" death. She explained: "It was beautiful and incredibly gentle." Lucinda, daughter of the Viscount of Falkland, confirmed that she and her 23 year old daughter were present during Nick's final moments. "Nick was an incredible person, and it was really inspiring to be around him during his illness," she continued. Speaking to Mail Online, the filmmaker went on: "There has been a lot of joy and hardship over the past three years and he could not have lived with more respect and dignity." Lucinda disclosed that Nick, who had known for three years that his death was approaching, "adored" the medical team who looked after him at Hammersmith Hospital, west London. "He valued everything that the NHS did for him and so do the rest of us," she revealed. Speaking about his diagnosis, Lucinda confided: "He's known for the past three years that he was going to die but he never felt sorry for himself and lived his life with incredible charm and courage." She detailed that Nick was "accepting of his situation" and remarkably, throughout his struggle, he never allowed stress to overwhelm him. Looking back on the height of Nick's stardom, Lucinda admitted that he "never enjoyed" the public attention that accompanied it and felt at his "most miserable" during his celebrity period. "That's why Nick stepped out of public life because he didn't like being famous," she said. "He was happy living a private life and didn't like being the centre of attention". Nick had gained the nickname "Lazarus" from his family due to his countless comebacks against all expectations. His sister, Denise, remembered: "He never gave up and put up such a good fight, he would always fight back and would not give up. He came back so often we would call him Lazarus after the biblical character, he really did fight so hard." Madonna, who was a dear friend, voiced her grief saying it was "heartbreaking" to lose Nick. She recalled him as a "kind, sweet human" who "suffered too much". The Levi's ad was recreated by Beyoncé last year, who said: 'My song Levii's Jeans celebrates what I believe is the ultimate Americana uniform – something we all wear with pride. I am honoured to work with Levi's to create quintessential American iconography."

The luxury of showing up
I find myself in a car park in Birmingham. Surprisingly, I'm standing next to a pile of horse poo that is taller than me while drinking pink champagne. I'm exhausted, my body feels as though Earth's gravity has at least doubled. It's only 9.30 in the morning and I've already eaten an egg sandwich, a three-sausage bap and a pastry with the heft of Giant Haystacks's forearm, so loaded with icing that my pancreas may never produce enough insulin to fully process it. I'm not hallucinating. Rather, I'm worn out and have eaten too much because I got up horribly early to watch the horse that belongs to my dear friend, Lucinda, compete at Horse of the Year Show at the NEC. Every size and shape of horse imaginable is here. Along with thousands of people united by their love of the animals and a jaunty disregard for the fact that the objects of their affections could kill them with a single grumpy kick. If you've never been to Horse of the Year Show, think Crufts, but with horses. Like Crufts, Horse of the Year Show is about shopping as much as it is about competing. This year the shopping hall is dominated by a stand ten times the size of all the others — it belongs to Holland Cooper, a clothing brand that also sells swanky riding gear. Before Holland Cooper you had to choose whether you cared more about the way your horse looked than you did (everyone did) and there was no shaded area in the Venn diagram of horses and glamour. Oh boy, there is now. Everywhere you look there are gorgeous young women who've spent as much time grooming themselves as their horses. And they're all proudly wearing gold-branded Holland Cooper. I, on the other hand, do not look or feel glamorous at all. Unused to champagne before breakfast and this morning's carb/sugar load, I stumble past the Holland Cooper stand, wondering if I might get away with a restorative nap in one of their changing rooms. Despite my passion for horses and my deep love for my friend, it would have been terrifically easy not to come. There's a constant tussle between every invitation and my To Do list, which teeters in a perpetual state of near-tsunami. So I nearly said no. But I wouldn't trade all the exhaustion (and indigestion) of getting to Birmingham for a midweek 7.20am horse show for anything. I've had the immense luxury of showing up for a friend, I've loved every minute and been further rewarded by watching her fulfil a lifelong dream of a big win. Lucinda's horse, Tigbourne (AKA Tigger), is the lightweight show hunter of the year. Thus, the champagne.

A wild new experiment, The Honesty Box, is here to shake things up – and it's about to get seriously juicy. Sign up for the Entertainment newsletter Sign up 4 Co-hosts Vicky and Lucinda get ready to open the Match Box Fronted by TV royalty Vicky Pattison, 37, and no-nonsense relationship guru Lucinda Light, 44, this brutally honest dating show is setting out to do what no app can: make people tell the truth. Set in a stunning villa in Cyprus known as Truetopia, singletons (aka Truetopians) are tested like never before. There's one simple rule: tell the truth about everything when you're summoned to the AI Honesty Box. The device is called EyeDetect and can identify tiny changes in a person's eye movements to gauge whether or not they are likely lying. No filters, no fibs. As a reward for telling the truth, they get cold, hard cash to boost their prize pot. So how much is honesty really worth? And when every little white lie costs them something, can the contestants remain true to themselves and the group? From awkward confessions to cringeworthy secrets, the Truetopians will have to face some seriously tough questions about what they've admitted to, cashing in their reality in exchange for getting one step closer to their true love in the villa. Luckily, they'll have the dynamic duo of Vicky and Lucinda by their sides. With years of experience in the chaotic world of reality TV, these iconic hosts are on hand to guide, challenge and support the contestants along this emotional rollercoaster. We caught up with them to play a hilarious game of 'Romantic vs Cynic'. To be a romantic is to always see the light and love in the situation, whereas sometimes our inner cynic creeps in to give us a reality check. Let's just say, Vicky's and Lucinda's no-nonsense advice on navigating the dating world might just change the way you approach relationships for ever. 4 DILEMMA ONE 'You love physical touch in public but your partner hates public displays of affection. Is this a dealbreaker or can you learn to live with the affection you get at home?' ANSWER: ROMANTIC Lucinda: 'Aw, I'm a romantic in this situation, for sure.' Vicky: 'That's actually mine and my partner's situation. 'Ercan [my husband] is not big on the old PDA, but I absolutely love it. He's definitely relaxed a bit, though.' Lucinda: 'But is he affectionate at home?' Vicky: 'Aw, yeah, he's like an octopus – can't keep his hands off me!' Lucinda: 'I used to maybe be a bit more into PDA, but I think in the future I'm probably going to be a bit more subtle out there in public.' DILEMMA TWO 'Your partner lies about previously having had more than one 'situationship' on the go at the same time. Does this affect your trust in them? Or do you accept that everyone has a past and feel self-assured that they only have eyes for you?' ANSWER: CYNIC Lucinda: 'You're a bit of a cynic about that.' Vicky: 'Lying is a red flag, full stop. I think once you start to tell lies like that, you get into a really grey area really fast and lose trust. 'I think: 'Well, if you're lying about that, what else are you lying about?' Don't ever lie to me. There's just no point. Tell us the truth.' Lucinda: 'Honesty is the best policy. Always.' 4 DILEMMA THREE 'Your partner forgets your anniversary but apologises sincerely. Do you forgive them and move on as you know they show you love all year round, or do you think it's a sign that they don't care enough?' ANSWER: LUCINDA – ROMANTIC vs VICKY – CYNIC Lucinda: 'I'm a romantic. It's just one day. If they're showing romance the whole year round, who cares? I'm not bothered.' Vicky: 'I'm approaching this from a slightly different standpoint. I just think the little things are important. Like remembering when you first kissed. 'I went mad when Ercan forgot Mother's Day. We don't actually have children – we have dogs. I just think it's important to celebrate the people you love. 'Anniversaries, Mother's Days, birthdays, whatever it is. Come on man, it's not that hard!' 4 You heard it here first! PDA isn't the be-all and end-all, honesty is always the best policy – and yes, Mother's Day includes dog mums too.
