Hit-and-run driver injures pedestrian, kills dog in Atherton, prosecutors say
A hit-and-run driver in Atherton killed a Bernese Mountain Dog and injured its owner while they were walking across the street, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney's Office.
Authorities accuse Lucio Villagomez Sosa, 71, of driving over a pedestrian's foot and killing the pedestrian's dog named Boe at a crosswalk spanning El Camino Real near Selby Lane around 7:40 a.m. Friday.
Sosa, who is from Redwood City, pled not guilty Tuesday to a felony charge of a hit-and-run resulting in injury, and three misdemeanor charges of a hit-and-run resulting in property damage, driving while privilege is suspended for a DUI, and driving while privilege is suspended for failing a blood alcohol test.
The pedestrian saw Sosa driving towards him in a green Ford van at a 'high rate of speed,' the district attorney's office said. The crash also injured the pedestrian's arm, which was bruised and required stitches.
Sosa then drove away, prosecutors said. Police reviewed video footage of the crash and found Sosa, who admitted to driving the van and fleeing out of fear, police said.
