Lottery player thought he won $100K, then kept scratching ticket. ‘Speechless'
A visit to Maryland turned into a $1 million payday for a New York native, lottery officials said. The merchant marine's 'latest assignment brought him to the Port of Baltimore,' and he bought five scratch-off tickets at a convenience store, Maryland Lottery officials said in a July 22 news release. The Lucky 777 tickets were $20 each. The commercial sailor scratched the tickets enough to reveal the QR codes, and then had the clerk scan them, lottery officials said. The clerk 'told me I won $100,000,' he said, per the release. 'I was satisfied with that and left.' But, later, his fellow merchant marines 'encouraged him to scratch the full play area,' lottery officials said. Then, 'the real shock came,' lottery officials said, as he realized he'd actually won $1 million. 'I couldn't believe it,' the man told lottery officials. 'I was floored. For the first time in my life, I was speechless.' When it comes to the winnings, the man said he wants 'to be smart with it and save as much as I can for retirement.'

The Brooklyn native told Maryland Lottery officials his latest assignment brought him to the Port of Baltimore, and he stopped at the 7-Eleven on Key Highway in Baltimore one day after finishing work early. The man bought five $20 Lucky 777 scratch-offs and asked the store clerk to scan them. "They told me I won $100,000," he said. "I was satisfied with that and left." The player said it was only when he told his crew of his good luck that they encouraged him to finish scratching the ticket, unveiling another surprise. "I couldn't believe it," he said. "I was floored. For the first time in my life, I was speechless. Turns out the ticket was worth $1 million." The winner said he plans to be conservative with his winnings. "I plan to keep working. College student thinks he won $5K with scratch-off ticket, then mom takes a look
A college student assumed he won $5,000 playing the lottery — until he handed the Lucky 777 scratch-off to his mom. 'He saw the word Autowin in a box with that prize amount' and figured it was his winning total, but she 'took a more thorough look at the ticket and told her son he missed more prizes as there were many more winning boxes on the ticket,' Maryland Lottery officials said in a July 15 news release. In fact, the Towson University student actually won $50,000. 'I was ecstatic when I found out it was that much money,' he told lottery officials. He's been a lottery player since age 18, lottery officials said, and he plans to spend some of his big prize and also sock some away. 'He needs to pay for college,' his mom said, per the release. The student bought the ticket at a convenience store in Olney, lottery officials said. The game debuted in May with six $1 million top prizes and eight $50,000 second-tier prizes, according to lottery officials. Four top prizes and three second-tier prizes remain, lottery officials said. Olney is about a 40-mile drive southwest from Baltimore.

‘Cherished family tradition' leads woman to life-changing Maryland lottery win
For a Maryland woman, playing lottery games isn't just a hobby — 'it's a cherished family tradition.' 'I've been playing since I became old enough,' the woman said in a May 30 Maryland Lottery news release. 'Growing up, I remember my mother playing regularly. She was always lucky and used to talk about winning enough one day to retire.' And now, after scoring a life-changing win, the woman found herself in 'a full circle moment that brought back fond memories of her mom's dreams,' lottery officials said. To avoid traffic, the Randallstown woman left early for a meeting and made a 'spur-of-the-moment stop at a gas station in Annapolis,' lottery officials said. She bought some lottery tickets but didn't have any winners, she told lottery officials. 'Then I tried a $20 MONOPOLY ticket and won my money back,' she said in the release. 'I figured my luck was running out, but decided to buy one more.' The lottery player tried her luck on a $20 Lucky 777 ticket, officials said. After her meeting wrapped up, the woman said she scratched the ticket's barcode and scanned it using the lottery app on her phone. She was 'floored,' lottery officials said. 'I saw the word 'winner' pop up, but then I saw the amount. I just froze,' the winner told lottery officials. 'I had to catch my breath.' The woman said she invited her mother over for dinner 'to share the incredible news.' 'She was speechless, which is rare,' the daughter said. The woman said she plans to use her winnings to 'plan for retirement and spoil her two beloved dogs,' lottery officials said. Annapolis is about a 30-mile drive south from Baltimore.
