Beach and Boating forecast: June 5, 2025
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — As the first week of June officially comes to a close, temperatures remain on the cooler side with wildfire smoke limiting sunshine this weekend.
Temperatures remain near average for this time of year with highs in the low to mid-70s this weekend.
Unlike last weekend, the winds will be quite calm. Both Friday and Saturday will have a north/northeast wind at 5 to 10 miles per hour. Sunday will be a touch breezy with a south wind at 10 to 15 miles per hour. Some yellow flags may fly then with wave heights at 1 to 3 feet.
Due to the limited sunshine and near average temperatures, water temperatures have only warmed a few degrees this week. Most beaches are reporting temperatures in the upper 40s to low 50s.
The average temperature in Lake Michigan for early June typically sits near 50 degrees. While these water temperatures remain near average for this time of the year, any water temperature below 60 degrees can pose a safety threat. If more than a few minutes are spent in the water, cold water shock and hypothermia can set in.
The good news? Water temperatures typically warm around 10 degrees throughout the month of June! The peak temperature sits in the low 70s for early to mid August.

Sunday will start off quite pleasant at the lakeshore with sunshine and highs reaching near 70 degrees. By the evening, a cold front is set to sweep through bringing the chance for some showers and thunderstorms.
At this time, no severe weather is expected. Lingering showers will continue Monday and Tuesday.
Air quality took a dip Thursday morning, with most of West Michigan reporting in the uncomfortable to unhealthy range. Those who are sensitive should limit time outdoors. An air quality alerts remains in effect for Newaygo, Oceana, and Mecosta counties throughout Thursday.
While cloud cover will limit the sunset this evening, the wildfire smoke can make the sunset look a bit more vibrant. As the light interacts with the smoke in the lower levels of the atmosphere, the sun tends to look bright red.
