FC Barcelona Ace Lamine Yamal: Playing For Real Madrid Is Impossible
While on international duty for Spain, FC Barcelona star Lamine Yamal said that doing a Luis ... More Figo-esque switch across the divide of El Clasico to Real Madrid is 'impossible'. While on international duty for Spain, FC Barcelona star Lamine Yamal said that doing a Luis Figo-esque switch across the divide of El Clasico to Real Madrid is 'impossible'. Lamine has been at Barca since the age of seven, when he was first scouted by its world famous La Masia academy. Breaking through to the first team in 2023, he has since become a Ballon d'Or candidate and followed up on a January promise by renewing his contract until 2031 last week. Though he is a Culer through and through, there have sometimes been concerns that Lamine might follow in Figo's footsteps and echo the Ballon d'Or winner's 2000 switch to Madrid considering his father is a Los Blancos fan. Asked about the prospect by COPE while on international duty for Spain, with whom he won the Euros in 2024, Lamine said that it was 'impossible' and that anyone worried about a potential transfer that would send shockwaves through football should be forgotten about. The 17-year-old also stated that 'I don't think about winning the Ballon d'Or'. 'I think about enjoying myself, playing well and if it has to come, it will come' he added. Reflecting briefly on Barca's domestic treble-winning season where it also reached the Champions League finals, Lamine said: 'We are improving, but we have to believe that we are the best. When Real Madrid lost to Arsenal, people thought they could come back. And when we drew against Inter, people doubted us. That is what must be changed.' A clearly competitive animal who often plays like he has a point to prove, Lamien revealed that his friends 'send me bad things on TikTok 20 minutes before the games, [because] they know that motivates me'. 'Against France, I was sleeping on the bus and my friend called me to say: 'Remember what Adrien Rabiot said [about] you', and I said: 'Yes, I remember''. Lamine's statements will come as a comfort to Culers, with his latest FC Barcelona contract set to keep the number 19 in Catalonia until he is at least 23. Before his current terms' expiry in 2031, however, expect President Joan Laporta or whoever is in power to try and tie him down further.

Barcelona president shares stands with UEFA chief and Luis Figo during Women's UCL final
Barcelona Femeni are on the hunt for their third successive UEFA Women's Champions League trophy tonight. The Catalan outfit are facing off against Arsenal in the finals of the competition at Estadio Jose Alvalade in Lisbon, Portugal. Advertisement Naturally, Barcelona president Joan Laporta is in attendance at the stadium to support the Femeni team as they seek to complete a hat-trick of European trophies. During the clash in Lisbon, though, one moment caught the eye of the fans in particular as Laporta was spotted sharing the stands with UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin as well as former Barcelona and Real Madrid footballer Luis Figo. It is no secret that the relations between Barça and UEFA have been affected since the Super League project with Ceferin being a vocal advocate against the rogue league. Laporta will be hoping Barça Femeni win the UWCL. (Photo by Juan Manuel) Meanwhile, Figo is pretty much a persona non-grata as far as Barcelona fans are concerned, having left the club to join arch-rivals Real Madrid two decades ago. Advertisement It must be remembered that Figo, currently a UEFA ambassador, was involved in a minor altercation with a section of Barça supporters in Portugal earlier this week. So, it was certainly intriguing to see Laporta standing in close quarters with the former Portugal international as well as Ceferin. It must, however, be noted that Laporta was seen sharing a stand with Ceferin and Figo in close quarters in the last year's UWCL final as well which Barcelona went on to win. As far as the game is concerned, at half-time the scoreline reads 0-0 with Alexia Putellas, Aitanoa Bonmati & co. yet to break the deadlock.

Luis Figo directs X-rated gesture at Barcelona supporter who called him a 'traitor' in tense moment 25 years after controversial move to Real Madrid
Luis Figo directed an X-rated gesture at a Barcelona supporter after being called a 'traitor' in a tense moment on the streets of Lisbon on Friday. Figo, 52, made an appearance at the official Women's Champions League final dinner along with other dignitaries ahead of the showdown on Saturday afternoon. A small group gathered outside the restaurant to watch the guests arrive but Figo was given a frosty reception by one onlooker clad in a bright yellow Barcelona jersey. In awkward scenes caught on camera, Figo was confronted over his controversial decision to join the Catalan giants' fierce rivals Real Madrid in 2000. The all-time great, and winner of the 2000 Ballon d'Or, then responded in vulgar fashion by grabbing his genitals before stepping forward to confront the supporter. He then appeared to realise he was being filmed and wisely chose to walk away. Before de-escalating the situation, Figo asked the heckler whether there was a problem, to which they replied: 'What's the problem if there's a problem? 'It's okay if there's a problem.' Figo made the headlines after choosing to cross the divide and join Real Madrid in July 2000 for what was then a world record fee of £52million. 'The main reason I left was because they valued me and genuinely wanted me,' Figo revealed in 2022. 'In the end I thought about myself. Was it selfish? Maybe. Did I earn more money? Yes but if I'd stayed I'd have earned the same.' Figo was roundly abused by Barcelona supporters on several occasions. Thousands of spectators mocked him by waving bank notes while others hurled bottles, coins and cigarette lighters on him on his return to the Nou Camp three months later. Two years later, a pig's head was thrown in his direction as he went to take a corner. 'I had everything in Barcelona, but you think: it's not like I'm going to a second-rate club,' Figo said. 'If it hadn't been Madrid, maybe I wouldn't have gone. 'It's a challenge, a decision based on feeling valued, convincing me I was going to be an extremely important piece. It could have been a cagada, a cock-up, but it wasn't.' Figo admitted he feared he would be attacked by a 'madman'. 'These days, there's more protection,' he told the Guardian. 'It felt like I was doing a press conference every day. That takes its toll. 'We were starting to tour, a new idea, there was the rivalry, the pressure, the price. 'The hatred too. Not everyone likes God, how is everyone going to like me? 'My only concern was if something happened physically, some madman. But go and play football? Nah! In football there's no reason to be scared.'
