Argentine World Champion Luis Galván Dies at 77
Buenos Aires - Saba: Argentine defender and 1978 World Cup hero Luis Galván has died at the age of 77, the Argentine Football Association announced on Monday. Galván spent several weeks in a hospital in Cordoba, where he was treated for a kidney infection, before passing away due to complications. The Argentine Football Association wrote on its official X page: "On behalf of President Claudio Tapia and the Executive Committee, the Argentine Football Association expresses its deep sorrow at the passing of Luis Galván, the 1978 World Champion." Galván was born in the northern city of Fernandez in 1948 and played in defense for the Albiceleste, which won the 1978 World Cup on home soil, featuring Daniel Passarella, striker Mario Kempes, and goalkeeper Ubaldo "Pato" Fillol. Galván was part of the team that won the World Cup on home soil in 1978, sealing glory in the final with a 3-1 victory after extra time over the Netherlands team. Galván formed a central duo with captain Daniel Passarella at the World Cup. He also took part in the 1982 tournament in Spain, where Diego Maradona played his first final tournament for his country, and made 34 appearances.
