One trade I would like to see, and it does feel pretty realistic, would be the Padres going out and getting Luis Robert Junior.
We know this is a player with flaws.
We know he has been a very inconsistent hitter over the last calendar year, but I feel like AJ Preller is still going to act like AJ Preller, no matter how depleted his farm system is.
And all things considered, he would probably be buying low here on Luis Roberts.
So the contractual obligations because we know San Diego's payroll has been a little bit tighter than in recent years, maybe that's a bit of a hurdle, but I feel like the upside that he could get with Robert, he could play left field, he could play center field, maybe you slide Merrill back over.
It's a little bit of an awkward fit, but in terms of offensive upside, I think that's the kind of player that Preller would swing big for that some of the other teams would be a little bit more scared off by.
So I don't think it would cost that much, maybe one solid prospect instead of a huge haul.
I think the upside with Robert makes a lot of sense with San Diego.
I'm doing the Yankees going out and getting two major pieces from the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Who does not love a shopping.
Where you can get two very different items at the same store.
The Yankees, every year that they have Aaron Judge on their roster, owe it to themselves to take advantage of perhaps the greatest right-handed hitter we have ever seen.
The Yankees also have a humongous, glaring, gaping hole at third base that needs filling.
Given their injuries in the pitching staff to Gerrit Cole and Clark Schmidt, and the relative unreliability of Luis Hill, they probably need another playoff starter as well.
Well, the Pirates can help with that.
Mitch Keller and Cabrian Hayes have multiple years of control.
Yankees could put a prospect package together to go out and get those two and bring them in.
They also have a little bit of an outfield surplus at the big league level.
I'd be interested if they throw one of those pieces in as well.
Hayes is an interesting player.
The bat has not developed into what people wanted it to be, but with the Yankees, all he's got to do is go out and be like a below average hitter and an elite defensive third baseman, and Keller could be the 3 starter, 4 starter for the Yankees in the playoffs.
Brian Cashman has to be aggressive with this deadline, I think he's gonna be, and the Pirates seem like a really good match.
