Bahraini women's crucial role in media highlighted
The election of three female journalists to the board of the Bahrain Journalists Association (BJA) for the 2025–2027 term reflects the growing role of Bahraini women in the media and highlights their progress in leadership positions. This was emphasised by Her Excellency Lulwa Saleh Al Awadhi, Secretary General of the Supreme Council for Women (SCW) as she noted this achievement reflects national efforts to empower women and ensure their active participation across sectors. Al Awadhi added that the result shows the strong confidence placed in Bahraini women's abilities, pointing out that female journalists are not only participating in the media field but also contributing to decision-making and shaping future directions. Al Awadhi congratulated Isa Al Shaiji on his re-election as Chairman of the BJA, emphasising the Council's commitment to continued cooperation with media institutions and associations to support development, promote the Kingdom of Bahrain's achievements in women's advancement, and consolidate gender balance and women's empowerment. She also highlighted the impact of the decision by Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, Consort of HM the King and President of the SCW, to establish the Women in Media Committee. She said the committee will help enhance cooperation with media bodies, highlight women's achievements locally and internationally, and promote a positive image of women, in line with the national plan for women's advancement and Bahrain's role in supporting and empowering women regionally and globally.

Social Development Ministry signs unified MoU to coordinate humanitarian support for Bahraini women
As part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the social protection system and reinforce integration among national institutions, the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Justice, Islamic Affairs and Waqf, the Ministry of Social Development, the Supreme Council for Women (SCW), and the Royal Humanitarian Foundation (RHF) signed a unified Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to coordinate and unify national efforts to support Bahraini women in humanitarian situations. Osama bin Saleh Al Alawi, Minister of Social Development; Lulwa Saleh Al Awadhi, Secretary-General of the SCW; Dana Khamis Al Zayani. Undersecretary for planning, family reconciliation and alimony at the Ministry of Justice, Islamic Affairs and Waqf; Major General Dr. Shaikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, Deputy Chief of Public Security; Lieutenant-General Adel bin Khalifa Al Fadhel, Deputy Minister of Interior; Zeyad Adel Darwish, Undersecretary at the Ministry of Social Development; and Assistant Secretary General for Planning and Charity Resources Development at the RHF, were present. Minister Al Alawi emphasised that the initiative reflects the vision of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and the directives of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister. He also highlighted the support of Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, Consort of His Majesty the King and President of the SCW, towards advancing Bahraini women. He noted that the MoU builds on the longstanding cooperation and continued partnership between the Ministry of Social Development and the SCW, and represents a coordinated step with the other relevant entities to unify efforts and amplify their impact through an organised national framework, building on previous successes in social protection and humanitarian response. The agreement focuses on clarifying roles and responsibilities among the participating institutions. The minister further noted that joint efforts will continue through permanent coordination mechanisms and ongoing development of systems and procedures to ensure tangible outcomes that meet the needs of Bahraini women under various circumstances. For her part, the Secretary-General Al Awadhi emphasised that, in line with the Council's mandate and the implementation of the National Strategy for the Advancement of Bahraini Women, this initiative aims to coordinate national efforts to support women in emergencies. She highlighted the continued support and attention given to Bahraini women, which has solidified their role as key partners in advancing national development under the leadership of His Majesty the King and the directives of HRH the Crown Prince and Prime Minister. She also highlighted the efforts of HRH Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim in supporting initiatives that benefit women, including this initiative. She thanked all participating entities for their role in coordinating and streamlining the services provided by government ministries and official institutions, and for facilitating support for Bahraini women in need. She underscored the importance of optimising national efforts and the services provided by relevant institutions within their respective mandates. Lt. Gen. Al Fadhel commended the support of General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, Minister of Interior, for initiatives aimed at furthering the advancement of Bahraini women, particularly within the security and service sectors of the Ministry. He also underlined the importance of coordinating national efforts to meet the humanitarian needs of Bahraini women as part of strengthening social values and contributing to a safe community environment. He highlighted that the Ministry of Interior's signing of the MoU comes in implementation of the Minister's directives to adopt innovative initiatives and projects that contribute to strengthening the societal framework. Lt. Gen. Al Fadhel also referenced the services provided by the Ministry to support Bahraini women in humanitarian situations, including the 'Fael Khair' programme implemented by the General Directorate of Verdict Enforcement and Alternative Sentencing; family and child protection offices in police directorates across governorates; unified procedural policies for handling related cases; and the role of governorates in providing social and coordination support. He added that this new initiative, which will be launched as part of the MoU and national coordination efforts, forms an organisational foundation and structured approach to responding to the humanitarian needs of Bahraini women, particularly in light of increasing challenges that require collective societal efforts to strengthen and preserve the family unit, thereby enhancing social protection. The Deputy Minister also underscored the importance of community awareness, initiatives that foster national belonging and loyalty, and the role of partnerships between public and private institutions and civil society in addressing challenges, preserving the Bahraini family, and promoting social stability. He also highlighted the contribution of Community Police in enhancing public safety and providing social support across all segments of society. For her part, Dana Khamis Al Zayani. Undersecretary for planning, family reconciliation and alimony at the Ministry of Justice, Islamic Affairs and Waqf, affirmed the importance of effective institutional coordination in raising the level of responsiveness to the humanitarian needs of women. She said the signing of the MoU was a meaningful step towards unifying and complementing efforts across the respective mandates of each entity, and for providing more efficient mechanisms to address women's urgent needs and deliver prompt support. The MoU aims to leverage and coordinate national efforts and services offered by ministries and relevant institutions within their remits to provide financial and in-kind support for Bahraini women facing urgent social, economic, or living conditions. SCW and IPA sign MoU
Lulwa Saleh Al Awadhi, Secretary General of the Supreme Council for Women (SCW), met with Dr. Shaikha Rana bint Isa Al Khalifa, Director General of the Institute of Public Administration (IPA), to enhance institutional cooperation. The two sides signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to deliver specialised training programmes aligned with the Council's goals on gender balance, women's integration, and equal opportunities. The agreement also covers collaboration in leadership development, data sharing, joint research, consulting, awareness events, and support for the National Plan for the Advancement of Bahraini Women (2025 – 2026). Bahrain elected to UN Women Executive Board for 2026–2028
Lulwa Saleh Al Awadhi, Secretary General of the Supreme Council for Women (SCW), emphasised that Bahrain's election to the Executive Board of UN Women for the 2026–2028 term reflects the Kingdom's growing international role in women's advancement. She attributed the achievement to the efforts of Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, Wife of His Majesty the King and President of the SCW, whose support has been key to empowering Bahraini women and advancing their leadership. Al Awadhi noted that Bahrain secured one of five Asia-Pacific seats, alongside Japan, China, the Republic of Korea and the Philippines, underlining its global standing in supporting women's advancement. She added that this is Bahrain's second term, following its previous membership from 2017 to 2019. Al Awadhi said that this achievement crowns a series of national milestones in advancing Bahraini women, who now hold key roles in decision making and leadership and have contributed significantly to the Kingdom's development. Empowerment Al Awadhi highlighted that Bahrain's term coincides with the third edition of the Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa Global Award for Women's Empowerment. The award, held in cooperation with UN Women, reinforces Bahrain's commitment to global best practices. Al Awadhi emphasised that Bahrain will use its membership to support the efforts of UN Women and contribute to the formulation of global policies and strategies that empower women, enhance their role in building societies and achieving sustainable development goals, and advance their participation in technology, science, and various domains, in line with Bahrain's longstanding principles of equality and equal opportunity.

Bahrain Engages Actively at 69th UN Commission on Status of Women
New York: The Kingdom of Bahrain participated in the 69th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69), represented by Lulwa Saleh Al Awadhi, Secretary General of the Supreme Council for Women (SCW). The session, held in New York, was chaired by Dr. Abdulaziz Al Wasel, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the UN. According to Bahrain News Agency, Ant³nio Guterres, Secretary-General of the UN, highlighted that in many countries, women and girls continue to be deprived of their fundamental rights. He described CSW as a catalyst for the transformation needed and called for efforts to promote peace and dignity for women and girls worldwide. Dennis Francis, President of the UN General Assembly, also emphasised the urgency of accelerating progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The session saw the participation of Sima Bahous, Executive Director of UN Women; Collen Vixen Kelapile, President of the UN Economic and Social Council; and representatives from the European Union, Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and the Arab Group. A political declaration marking the 30th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women was adopted. The session focused on evaluating the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, reviewing progress on gender equality, and setting global standards for advancing women's empowerment. Al Awadhi also attended a side event organised by the State of Kuwait, titled 'Women and Technology: Inspiring Stories from the GCC countries'. Shaima Shawqi Al Meer, Senior Space Data Analyst at the National Space Science Agency (NSSA) and SCW delegate, spoke at the event, highlighting Bahraini women's achievements in technology, emerging sciences, and advanced technologies. She emphasised Bahrain's commitment to women's empowerment in technology as a pillar for sustainable development and innovation. Al Meer noted that Bahrain's framework for women's advancement is based on the National Action Charter, Constitution, and national strategies promoting equal opportunities. She highlighted the establishment of the NSSA, where 63% of Bahraini employees are women, holding 50% of executive roles and 43% of engineering positions as of Q3 2023. She added that the Kingdom prioritises women's education and training in STEM fields, launching AI, cybersecurity, fintech, and data science programmes to equip women with future-ready skills. Bahrain has also fostered a startup ecosystem supporting women entrepreneurs in fintech, e-commerce, and AI, contributing to economic growth. Al Meer shared her experience in space sciences and highlighted Bahraini women's contributions in many promising areas, such as utilising AI to improve and streamline government services, satellite policy development, and strategic risk assessment. She also noted their involvement in Bahrain's space team, including collaboration with the United Arab Emirates. She expressed pride in being part of this progress and innovation, attributing it to the support of Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, Consort of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and President of the SCW, in advancing women's empowerment. During the GCC side event, Al Awadhi highlighted that GCC countries are not classified as developing nations but have strong, influential economies. She stated that Gulf women enjoy full access to services and opportunities on par with their counterparts in advanced nations. She also noted that there is no gender wage gap in the GCC, as legislation and strategies have driven rapid economic progress. Al Awadhi also attended the 'Mother of the Nation' exhibition, hosted by the UAE, showcasing the vision and contributions of Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak in women's empowerment. Bahrain's delegation also participated in Saudi Arabia's side event, titled 'From Vision to Reality: Saudi Arabia's Story of Women's Empowerment,' which highlighted women's progress under Vision 2030. Additionally, Al Awadhi held a coordination meeting with Dr. Moez Doraid, Regional Director of UN Women for the Arab States, to review preparations for launching the third edition of the Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa Global Award for Women's Empowerment. The award is set to be launched on March 11 in New York as part of CSW69.
