RSPCA: Bella the Lurcher in Newport is ready for a new home

Two-year-old black-and-white Lurcher crossbreed Bella was taken into RSPCA care in October last year after being rescued alongside other dogs. After being cared for at the charity's Newport Animal Centre since November, Bella has gone from strength to strength and is now ready to meet her new owners. Bella is very food-motivated, which makes building a bond and continuing her training a joy for someone who will be patient and kind with her. Bella is looking for a calm and understanding home. She likes her space and would prefer to be the only pet in the household. She can be easily spooked and needs a quiet, adult-only environment where she can feel safe and build trust. She can be a bit nervous at first, but once she feels secure and you win her trust, her gentle and loyal nature shines through. (Image: RSPCA) Hayley Moorey, behaviourist at Newport Animal Centre, said: "Bella hasn't had an easy start in life, but we know in the right home she will thrive. "She is so sweet and has so much love to give, and with the right family she will be a loving and devoted companion. "Bella can be a little shy at first but is super affectionate with people she knows - once she knows you, she loves to snuggle in and she loves a sofa. "She loves to chill out with us in reception when it's quiet and run around with toys, throwing them up into the air. "She is super clever and loves to use her nose - she's a great tracker. "She has a natural gift for it, so would be great for people who enjoy practising tracking or scent work." She wears a muzzle as part of ongoing training and likes to explore the world at her own pace - meaning off-lead runs in a secure, enclosed field or paddock will be best for her. Prospective adopters can contact RSPCA Newport Animal Centre on 0300 123 0744 or email newport@ for more information.

Dog lovers gather in Martletwy to support Wales Air Ambulance

A POPULAR Pembrokeshire dog show is returning this month and will raise vital funds for the Wales Air Ambulance. The Bluestone Charity Terrier, Lurcher, Whippet, and Family Dog Show will take place over the weekend of Friday, May 31 to Saturday, June 1 at The Snooty Fox, Martletwy. The event has drawn strong crowds in previous years and is once again expected to be a lively, family-friendly affair. Organised by Rebecca Woods and her dedicated team of volunteers, the event features a packed schedule of dog classes, stalls, food and drink, a licensed bar, a raffle, and plenty of entertainment for all ages. There's even a large children's play area to keep the youngest visitors entertained. This year's show includes major qualifiers and a wide range of prizes – with £100 for each overall show champion and £50 awards in the family, KC, and Pick and Mix classes. Rebecca Woods, who founded the event, said: 'This is our fourth year running the show and it's always a really enjoyable weekend – not just for the dogs, but for the whole family. This year is especially meaningful to me as I lost my mum at the start of the year. We've been lucky with the weather every time so far, so fingers crossed for sunshine again.' In previous years, the show has raised over £1,200 for the Chemotherapy Day Unit at Glangwili Hospital. This year's chosen beneficiary, Wales Air Ambulance, was selected by public vote via the event's Facebook page. The charity provides emergency medical care across Wales, taking hospital-level treatment directly to patients in need. Crews are able to administer anaesthesia, deliver blood transfusions, and perform minor procedures at the scene. As a pan-Wales service, its aircraft and rapid response vehicles serve both rural and urban areas – and rely entirely on public donations to meet their annual £11.2 million funding requirement. Mike May, regional fundraising manager for West Wales, said: 'A huge thank you to the organisers for choosing Wales Air Ambulance to benefit from this year's event. The Bluestone Dog Show is always a fantastic occasion, and fundraisers like this help us continue delivering lifesaving care wherever it's needed. Every pound raised really does make a difference.'

Bluestone dog show to raise funds for Wales Air Ambulance

The Bluestone Charity Terrier, Lurcher, Whippet, and Family Dog Show, which has been a hit in previous years, will take place at the Snooty Fox in Martletwy from May 31 to June 1. The event, organised by Rebecca Woods and her team, promises a fun day out for dogs and families alike. There will be stalls, a raffle, food, refreshments, and a licensed bar. Prizes include £100 for each show champion and £50 for each family and KC and Pick and Mix show champion. Major qualifiers are also available. Ms Woods, who is particularly excited about hosting the 'best of the West Championship', said: "This is the fourth year we have been running the show. "It is a really nice weekend every year, it is a nice day out for dogs, as well as families. "There's a big play area for the children to enjoy. "This year means a lot to me, after I lost my mum at the beginning of the year. "Every year, we've been lucky with the weather, so fingers crossed it will be sunny." The show has previously raised more than £1,200 for the Chemotherapy Day Unit at Glangwili Hospital. The Wales Air Ambulance was chosen as this year's beneficiary by a public vote on the show's Facebook page. The charity takes consultant-led hospital-standard treatments to patients and, if necessary, transfers them directly to the most appropriate hospital for their illness or injury. Consultants can administer anaesthesia, deliver blood transfusions and conduct minor operations at the scene of an incident. As a pan-Wales service, its dedicated crews, regardless of where they are based, will travel the length and breadth of the country to deliver emergency lifesaving care. It relies on public donations to raise the £11.2 million required every year to keep the helicopters in the air and rapid response vehicles on the road. Mike May, West Wales regional fundraising manager for Wales Air Ambulance, said: "A huge thank you to the organisers for deciding that the Wales Air Ambulance would benefit from this year's dog show. "The charity dog show is always a great success and a wonderful way to raise funds for good causes. "We really appreciate the support and hope the sun comes out for a successful show. "Every pound raised makes a lifesaving difference. "Fundraisers, like this one, will help us to continue to be there for the people of Wales when they need us most." RSPCA: Dog waiting more than a year to find new home

Zeus, also known as Yogi, has been in the care of the RSPCA for more than a year, with little interest from potential adopters. In December, Zeus made a 215-mile trip from RSPCA Felledge Animal Centre in Durham to the RSPCA Bryn Y Maen Animal Centre in Upper Colwyn Bay in the hope that a change of location would help introduce him to potential new adopters and increase the chances of finding him a new home. One application came in for him, but it wasn't his perfect match. This has meant that Zeus - who arrived in RSPCA due to concerns for himself and multiple other dogs - has seen countless other dogs find homes before him. Animal care assistant Sarah Davies said: "Zeus - who we now affectionately call Yogi - is just overlooked time after time. "He is a larger boy - but he is so clever and has so much love to give. "He watched so many of his furry friends find their perfect match before him - and we just don't want to see him spend one day longer than he needs to in kennels." The three-year-old Lurcher crossbreed is looking for a home where he is the only animal and also needs a secure garden to run about in. He could live with children of secondary school age. Other long stays at the centre include rabbit Sesame, who has been at RSPCA Bryn-Y-Maen Animal Centre for 314 days with no interest. Cats Bean and Sprout have been waiting for 174 days with no interest from adopters. The duo came into RSPCA care due to welfare concerns and are looking for a quieter home without other cats or a dog.

Overlooked Colwyn Bay rescue dog still waiting for new home

Zeus - also known as Yogi by the dedicated staff and volunteers at RSPCA Bryn Y Maen Animal Centre in Colwyn Bay - has been in RSPCA care for more than year, but sadly has had little interest. In December, Zeus made the 215-mile trip from RSPCA Felledge Animal Centre in Durham to Upper Colwyn Bay in the hope that a change of location would help introduce him to potential new adopters and increase the chances of finding him a new home. Despite press and social media appeals, Zeus is still waiting. Although one application came in for him, sadly it wasn't his perfect match. This has meant that Zeus - who arrived in RSPCA due to concerns for himself and multiple other dogs - has seen countless other dogs find homes before him. Animal Care Assistant Sarah Davies said: 'Zeus - who we now affectionately call Yogi - is just overlooked time after time. He is a larger boy - but he is so clever and has so much love to give. 'He watched so many of his furry friends find their perfect match before him - and we just don't want to see him spend one day longer than he needs to in kennels. 'Not many dogs travel across the country in search of a new home but Yogi is one of them. We'd love anyone who thinks they can offer him the right home to get in touch and arrange to come to the centre to meet her as we think they will be smitten. 'We hope to spread the word further than North Wales, to the borders to Cheshire, Liverpool, Shropshire, Staffordshire - as well as across Wales. If Yogi can travel the country - we know the perfect match for him will do the same for this loveable pooch!!' The three-year-old Lurcher crossbreed is looking for a home where he is the only animal and also needs a secure garden to run about in. He would be suitable to live with children of secondary school age. 'Yogi is such a clever boy who is always willing to learn new things,' said Sarah. 'He loves to play and would love an active home so he can enjoy walking, running and playing to his hearts content.' Other long stays at the centre include rabbit Sesame, who has been at RSPCA Bryn-Y-Maen Animal Centre for 314 days with no interest! Chilled natured Sesame is looking to be gradually bonded with a female rabbit and could live either indoors or outdoors. While cats Bean and Sprout have been waiting for 174 days with no interest from adopters. MORE NEWS The duo came into RSPCA care due to welfare concerns and are looking for a quieter home without other cats or a dog. After being a little anxious at the centre at first - they have blossomed into inquisitive, interactive boys who enjoy spending time playing with toys together or relaxing in the same bed. On Sunday, May 18, RSPCA Bryn-Y-Maen Animal Centre will be holding their annual dog show and fete which will run between 11am and 4pm. The Colwyn Bay centre will be opening its doors once again for all the family to enjoy a special dog show, a selection of stalls from local small businesses, bargain pre-loved pet goods along with VIP tours of the centre. The event, which is supported by the Friends of Bryn Y Maen, will involve 10 competition classes along with a selection of stalls from local small businesses, bargain pre-loved pet goods along with VIP tours of the centre. Entry on the field will be £4 per car and £3 entry per dog class and it will be a cash-only event. To find out more about the animals at RSPCA Bryn Y Maen Animal Centre - or to provide support to the centre - you can visit their website or visit their Facebook page.
