Child with autism injured during fight on CTA Green Line steps at Clinton L station declared brain dead
The 9-year-old boy with autism who was critically injured when he fell down the stairs at a CTA Green Line station during a fight on the steps has been declared brain dead. Family identified him as Elijah Flores They were too upset to speak on camera, but spoke with CBS News Chicago over the phone Monday. Flores was with a 22-year-old family friend at the Clinton L Stop in the West Loop on Sunday, Aug. 10, when Chicago police said two men got into a fight with the family friend. The 22-year-old was hit in the back of the head and fell down the stairs; Flores fell as well. He hit his head in the fall and was taken to Lurie Children's Hospital in critical condition. His family said the fall caused life-threatening brain trauma. Now, over a week later, the -year-old who loved singing and dancing, Michael Jackson and going to school, has been declared brain dead. His parents said his favorite place was Lake Michigan and that he loved superheroes. They said he will now be a superhero to other children as an organ donor. The two men who started the fight ran away and police are still looking for him. Flores' family is now raising money on GoFundMe to pay for his medical expenses and funeral plans. They said they are in direct contact with Chicago police and hope to find the men behind their son's death. CBS News Chicago checked with the CTA but they said they also had no updates to share. Photos of the people involved have not been made publicly available.

Child critically injured in fight on CTA Green Line stairs at Clinton stop in West Loop, Chicago police say
Chicago police said a 9-year-old boy was critically injured in a fight while leaving a CTA Green Line station Sunday morning. Police said a 22-year-old man and a 9-year-old boy were walking down the stairs at the Clinton station in the 500 block of West Lake Street Sundy around 11:35 a.m. when the 22-year-old became involved in an argument with two unknown men. The argument turned physical, and one of the suspects hit the 22-year-old in the back with an unknown object, causing him to fall down the stairs, police said. The 9-year-old also fell, and in doing so hit his head on the ground. The 9-year-old was taken to Lurie Children's Hospital in critical condition with head trauma. It does not appear the 22-year-old suffered any significant injuries. The two suspects ran away. No one is in custody and investigation is ongoing.

5-year-old girl critical after falling into pool at suburban Chicago home
A 5-year-old girl was taken to the hospital after falling into a pool at a home Friday evening in the southwest suburbs. Police said that around 7:30 p.m., officers responded to the 13000 block of Silver Fox Drive in unincorporated Lemont Township, where they learned that a child had fallen into a pool. Lemont Fire Department paramedics also arrived at the scene and performed life-saving measures. The child was taken to Silver Cross Hospital and later transferred to Lurie Children's Hospital, where the child was in critical condition. No further information about the incident was immediately available.

Chicago Ronald McDonald House reveals kitchen, dining makeover
After six months of construction, a Ronald McDonald House near Lurie Children's Hospital unveiled a makeover to their kitchen and dining spaces. The Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana on Grand Avenue completed its renovation to modernize their kitchen and dining areas. In its new space, volunteers will be able to prepare more than 140,000 meals for families each year, creating a space for incoming families. Ronald McDonald House charities are house-like facilities located by local hospitals to provide temporary housing and support to families whose children are receiving medical treatment. Along with housing, Ronald McDonald provides families with laundry facilities, play areas for children, and assistance with transportation.

2 Chicago firefighters, teenager injured in Lincoln Park apartment fire
Two Chicago firefighters and a teen were injured Saturday afternoon in an apartment fire in the Lincoln Park neighborhood. Firefighters responded to a fire on the third floor of a four-story apartment building in the 2300 block of South Ashland Avenue, Chicago Fire Department officials said. Two firefighters who were injured were taken to the hospital in good condition. A teenage boy was taken to Lurie Children's Hospital for treatment to be checked for smoke inhalation. No other injuries were reported, and no further information was immediately available Saturday afternoon.
