Amateur Riders' Club hopes to stay put after plea to govt

Mumbai: For more than eight decades, Amateur Riders' Club (ARC), Mumbai's only civilian riding club, has stood as a unique bastion of equestrian tradition, training, and community spirit in the heart of the city. Amid ongoing uncertainty over the fate of this historic institution, govt is signalling a willingness to seriously consider ARC's request to remain at its current location in a corner of the Mahalaxmi racecourse. The ARC wasn't taken into consideration when the govt signed a deal with Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) last year, making the future of ARC uncertain. Since then, ARC mandarins have been lobbying with the govt at various levels to ensure that the club remains at its present location but has failed to achieve anything concrete so far. This glimmer of hope arrived recently, after the chairman of ARC, Milan Luthria, spoke to the chief minister's office and was informed that the club's case is under consideration and will be reviewed in the best possible manner. This development was revealed in a letter written by Luthria to ARC members. Luthria, however, did not respond to TOI's efforts for his views on the development. The ARC has produced several equestrian stars who have represented the country at the Asian Games . Most recently, one of the members of the ARC, Hriday Chheda, was part of the gold-medal-winning Indian dressage team at the Hangzhou Asian Games in China in Oct 2023. This is because of ARC's facilities, which include an Olympic standard show jumping and dressage arena, and a polo field. At 90 x 60 metres, the show jumping and dressage arena is one of its kind in India. Due to these Olympic standard facilities, the Equestrian Federation of India holds the Asian Games Selection Trials for show jumping and dressage at ARC. The ARC not only allows its members to use its facilities , it even conducts basic horse-riding learning courses for the general public.
