Urgent health alert as Dunnes Stores recalls €4.99 food item over undeclared allergen

Dunnes Stores has issued an urgent recall for a batch of its popular sweet bakery treat following a labelling mishap that poses a serious health risk for some shoppers. Customers who've purchased the item in question are being urged not to munch on it and bring it back post-haste to any branch for a full refund – you won't even need to dig out your receipt. The product in question is the Dunnes Stores Luxury Apple Tart, which will set you back €4.99, identified by the batch code 242 and touted as best before June 16, 2025. Turns out, due to a mix-up, the packages marked as apple tart actually contain the Pear and Almond Pie, which is bad news for anyone with a nut allergy or intolerance because these packs have undisclosed almonds. The Food Safety Authority of Ireland has today confirmed the recall and issued a warning to anyone with an allergy to almonds to steer clear of this particular sweet, reports the Irish Mirror. (Image: Dunnes Stores) A spokesman said: "The above batch of Dunnes Stores Luxury Apple Pie is being recalled as some packs have been mispacked with Dunnes Stores Luxury Pear and Almond Pie. The product contains almonds which are not declared on the label. This may make the batch unsafe for consumers who are allergic to or intolerant of almonds, and therefore, these consumers should not eat the implicated batch." Dunnes Stores has said sorry over the mistake and insisted customers give the pie a miss. A spokesperson commented: "We apologise that it has been necessary to recall this product and for the inconvenience caused. Customers are advised not to consume this product, instead to return it to a Dunnes Stores store for a full refund. No receipt is required." Concerned shoppers can get in touch with Dunnes Stores customer services on 0818300066 or 01 902 0309. Reactions to almond allergies can range from mild to severe, with possible symptoms including skin reactions, digestive issues, and respiratory problems. In the worst cases, individuals may experience anaphylaxis, which is potentially fatal. Key symptoms to be aware of involve hives, itching, swelling, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and difficulties in breathing. Dunnes Stores recalls popular €4.99 item as urgent 'do not eat' warning issued

Dunnes Stores has urgently recalled a batch of one of its popular bakery items after a packaging mix-up that could pose a health risk to some customers. The retailer is asking anyone who bought the affected product to stop eating it immediately and return it to any store for a full refund. No receipt is required. The recall is for the Dunnes Stores Luxury Apple Tart, priced at €4.99, with the batch code 242 and best before date of June 16, 2025. While the packaging says apple tart, the affected packs actually contain the Luxury Pear and Almond Pie. This means the affected batch contains undeclared almonds, which puts consumers with nut allergies or intolerances at risk. The Food Safety Authority of Ireland confirmed the recall today and warned anyone who is allergic to almonds not to eat it. A spokesperson said: "The above batch of Dunnes Stores Luxury Apple Pie is being recalled as some packs have been mispacked with Dunnes Stores Luxury Pear and Almond Pie. The product contains almonds which are not declared on the label. This may make the batch unsafe for consumers who are allergic to or intolerant of almonds, and therefore, these consumers should not eat the implicated batch." Dunnes Stores has apologised for the incident and urged customers not to eat the affected pie. A spokesperson said: "We apologise that it has been necessary to recall this product and for the inconvenience caused. Customers are advised not to consume this product, instead to return it to a Dunnes Stores store for a full refund. No receipt is required." Shoppers with any concerns can contact Dunnes Stores customer services on 0818300066 or 01 902 0309. Almond allergy symptoms can vary from mild to severe and often include skin reactions, digestive troubles and breathing difficulties. In extreme cases, anaphylaxis - a life-threatening reaction - may occur. Common symptoms to watch out for include hives, itching, swelling, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and difficulty breathing.
