Seattle Mariners Shortstop Breaks Record Held by Ichiro

When you're in the record books alongside Seattle Mariners legend Ichiro Suzuki, you're in royal company. When you surpass Ichiro, it's special. J.P. Crawford is in rarified air after besting the freshly-minted Hall of Famer over the weekend in Texas. Advertisement Crawford, like Ichiro once did, bats leadoff for the Mariners. That's the spot where Crawford made his mark in Saturday's 2-1 win over the Texas Rangers. On the first pitch of the game against Rangers starter Patrick Corbin, Crawford sent a towering shot to right field. The 369-foot blast off an 88-mph sinker gave the M's a quick 1-0 lead before most fans had even settled into their seats. That proved to be Crawford's third career home run on the first pitch of the game, setting a new franchise record in that category. Crawford had been tied with Ichiro, who did it twice in his illustrious 14-year career with the Mariners. This is Crawford's seventh season with Seattle. The 30-year-old shortstop also has 12 career leadoff home runs in Seattle, which is second to Ichiro in club annals. Advertisement The chances of catching Ichiro on this list don't look quite as promising. Crawford is 25 leadoff homers behind Ichiro, who had 37 such solo shots with Seattle. One of the perks of being with the M's for Crawford is being around Ichiro on an everyday basis. Ichiro, who is a special assistant to the chairman, still does a daily workout with the team. 'When I first got over here, seeing Ichiro, I was kind of starstruck,' Crawford said on YouTube last year. 'That guy, 'til this day, probably does more than our whole team combined.' Ichiro was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame earlier this year, falling one vote shy of being an unanimous selection. His jersey is being retired by the Mariners on Aug. 9. Advertisement 'It meant so much to have felt that,' Ichiro said through an interpreter, according to 'As I've gone through my career and interacted with many people, I felt like those peoples' kindness and their feelings really helped me perform and also be the person that I am. 'Obviously the feelings I have toward the Seattle fans are very special.' The Mariners (20-13) lead the American League West and open a series at the Athletics on Monday night.

Seattle Mariners Sitting Pretty in Postseason Race After Strong First Quarter

While the last two weeks have not been ideal, the Seattle Mariners' entire performance over the first quarter of the season has the team well positioned for an extended playoff push this year. The Mariners enter Friday with a 23-19 record, leading the American League West, ranking fifth in the American League, and 11th in MLB. With how weak the American League is this year, it is a strong foundation to build on with the remaining 120 games of the campaign. Advertisement Seattle last made the postseason in 2022, with their most recent trip before that one coming in 2001. They have famously never won a playoff series in their 49-year existence, but the M's have a strong chance of changing that this year. A recent article from Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report took a look at the playoff chances of all 30 teams through the first quarter of the season and ranked them from most to least likely. The M's are sitting pretty with their 87.2% chance, and Miller ranked them sixth. "Seattle feels a bit high as the third-most likely playoff team out of the American League," Miller wrote, "but perhaps that's just the nagging memory of the M's blowing what was a 10-game lead in the AL West in mid-June of last season. They're hitting much better than last year, even with Julio Rodríguez's OPS continuing to hover in the .700 range. And even with George Kirby yet to make his 2025 debut, they've managed to more than tread water and should be in excellent shape when both he and Logan Gilbert return, hopefully by the end of the month." Advertisement Rodriguez's offensive struggles throughout his career have certainly been an issue, but he still provides strong defense in the outfield and can turn the power on at any given moment. The first quarter of the season has come and gone, and "only" 120 games remain. The base has been poured, and now it is time for Seattle to build on their strong start to the year in its push for the playoffs.

Seattle Mariners Shut Down Bryce Miller With Arm Issue

Bryce Miller's last start for the Seattle Mariners was Mother's Day at T-Mobile Park against the Toronto Blue Jays. He was belted for seven runs on eight hits through five innings pitched. In the postgame, Miller stated that he has been experiencing some arm soreness and back tightness on and off during the season. He's been placed on the 15-day injured list with right elbow inflammation. Advertisement In his 2025 campaign so far, Miller has racked up a record of 2-4 through eight games, a 5.22 ERA over 39.2 innings pitched, and 35 punchouts with a 1.54 WHIP. In the corresponding move, the M's recalled left-hander Jhonathan Díaz from the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers. Díaz has only appeared in one game in 2025, and pitched 1.1 innings in relief and recorded a strikeout on April 1. So far, through seven appearances for the Rainiers, Díaz has a 2-3 record with a 5.87 ERA over 30.2 innings pitched and 27 punchouts with a 1.47 WHIP. Another crucial blow to this already battered Seattle rotation as Miller becomes the third M's pitcher to land on the IL behind Logan Gilbert and George Kirby.

Mariners Game #31 Preview: 5/2/25, SEA @ TEX

After the abbreviated homestand, the Mariners are back on the road. Tonight they face off against the Texas Rangers for the second time this year. The last time these clubs met the M's swept Rangers at T-Mobile Park. Repeating that feat in this three game set would go a long way towards securing the season series against the Rangers. The M's are also hunting down their 8th straight series victory, a feat they haven't accomplished since 2022. That torrid stretch also included a 14 game winning streak, as readers of this site will likely remember. Lineups: We have a major league debut on deck today, as recent call-up Rhylan Thomas will be making the start in right field. Thomas was called up after Luke Raley suffered an oblique strain that will leave him out for six weeks. He's a low strikeout, up-the-middle type hitter, so look for him to sneak one through for his first big league hit tonight. Advertisement Besides Thomas, the lineup is typical for the injury-addled Mariners of the moment, with J.P. leading off and reigning AL Player of the Week Jorge Polanco in the number two spot. Rowdy Tellez has also been creeping up the lineup due to injury, hitting 6th today. Bryan Woo will get the start tonight, his 6th outing against the Rangers. He has been exceptional this season, boasting one of the best fastballs and lowest walk rates in the Majors. He'll want to emulate his last start against the Rangers, where he threw 7 innings of 1 run ball and struck out 7 hitters. The Rangers will also have a debut tonight, having today called up Blaine Crim when they sent down Jake Burger for a 'reset.' Crim's not really a power guy, but he's had a strong season so far in AAA Round Rock. Advertisement Jack Leiter will be pitching for Texas today, in just his 4th start of the season. He had to go on the IL with a blister, but otherwise has been great in 2025, with a statcast Pitching Run Value of 5, the same as Bryan Woo. Command remains a problem for him, however, and perhaps the Mariners, being the team that leads MLB in walks, can take advantage of that. Game Info: First Pitch: 5:05 pm PT TV: ROOT Sports with Aaron Goldsmith, Angie Mentink, and Jay Buhner. Radio: Seattle Sports 710 AM with Rick Rizzs and Gary Hill Jr. Today in Mariners History: 2002: Mike Cameron hits 4 home runs in a single game against the Chicago White Sox. More from

Hot Seattle Mariners Open Crucial Series at Texas Rangers

After completing a successful five-game homestand by going 4-1, the Seattle Mariners begin a six-game road trip starting in the Lone Star State for three games against the Texas Rangers. The M's are looking for their eighth consecutive series win, while Texas is looking to bounce back into the win column. Bryan Woo for the Mariners and Jack Leiter for the Rangers will be the probable pitchers for both teams in the series opener Friday night. Woo has a 3-1 record with a 3.09 ERA over 32 innings pitched while also striking out 30. He had a strong outing in his last go-round, going six strong innings, only allowing two earned runs on three hits and striking out eight against the Boston Red Sox. Advertisement Leiter, the 2024 Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Year, has contributed greatly to this Texas rotation. In three appearances in 2025, he is 2-0 with a 2.03 ERA in 13 innings while also striking out 13. For the next two games, Luis Castillo will toe the rubber on Saturday for Seattle against left-hander Patrick Corbin. Sunday afternoon's game will showcase some dueling righties with Logan Evans for the M's opposite Jacob deGrom. Seattle went into Friday with a two-game lead in the American League West over the Houston Astros and Athletics. Texas is in fourth place, three games back.
