‘Selfless service of Halakatti got us treasure of vachana literature'
'It is because of the dedicated efforts and selfless service of Halakatti that thousands of vachanas of 12th century reformer Basavanna and his contemporary vachanakaras are now available to us,' chairman of Karnataka Bal Vikas Academy Sangamesh Babaleshwar has said. He was inaugurating the birth anniversary celebrations of Halakatti, better known as 'father of Vachana literature', in Dharwad on Wednesday. The programme was organised by the district administration in association with the Department of Kannada and Culture. 'Vachana literature is considered great with a spiritual message and it is because of Halakatti we got this treasure. Halakatti tirelessly travelled villages, hamlets, and managed to collect thousands of vachanas written on palm leaves. He subsequently compiled them and despite financial constraints set up his own printing press to publish the compilation,' he said. Mr. Sangamesh said that it would be no exaggeration to say that if not for Halakatti's service, the treasure of vachana literature would have been lost. 'That is the reason why Halakatti is called the father of vachana literature and his birth anniversary is being celebrated as vachana literature conservation day,' he said. He also emphasised the need for teaching children about the life and contribution of such personalities and suggested holding birth anniversary celebrations of various vachanakaras in schools and colleges. Mayor of Hubballi Jyoti Patil too emphasised the need for teaching children about vachana literature, which advocated the need for treating everyone equally. Additional Deputy Commissioner Geeta C.D. said that the the vachanas of the sharanas comprised ethical and moral values. Writer Siddanna Langoti delivered a lecture on Halakatti's life and contribution. Chairman of Dr. M.M. Kalburgi National Memorial Trust Viranna Rajur and others were present.

Man claims trial to attempted murder of cop
KUALA LUMPUR: A self-employed man pleaded not guilty to a charge of attempting to cause the death of a police officer by ramming a vehicle into him earlier this month. M.M. Steven, 30, entered his plea after the charge was read out to him before Sessions Court judge Noridah Adam. He is accused of attempting to kill Inspector Hazlan Ali Abdul Hamid by driving a Perodua Aruz at him with intent to cause death, at 2.45pm on April 4 at Jalan Cengkeh, Taman Cheras. The offence, under Section 307 of the Penal Code, carries a maximum sentence of 20 years' imprisonment, a fine, or both upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Vivien Yeap did not offer bail. In mitigation, defence counsel Tripatjit Singh requested the court to exercise its discretion and grant bail at a minimal amount. "He is unmarried and is the primary carer for his elderly mother. "His sisters are present in court today and are prepared to post bail. They will also ensure his attendance at all future proceedings. "He is not a flight risk," the lawyer said. Noridah set bail at RM10,000 with one surety and fixed May 28 for case mention. On April 4, Cheras district police chief Assistant Commissioner Aidil Bolhassan said officers had to open fire before arresting three suspected kidnappers in a vehicle at Jalan Cengkeh. He said that the three men, aged between 24 and 30, were in a Perodua Aruz along with a man believed to have been abducted earlier in Taman Nusa Bestari, Johor. When police stopped the vehicle and ordered the suspects to exit, they allegedly attempted to flee by repeatedly ramming the police vehicle. To neutralise the threat posed to his officers, several shots were fired at the suspects' tyres. The 26-year-old victim was believed to have been kidnapped outside an entertainment outlet at 5.47am. Investigations into the motive behind the abduction are ongoing.
