28 lakh diseased coconut trees face axe in TN

Chennai: A severe outbreak of Kerala Root Wilt Disease has placed coconut farmers in Tamil Nadu's (TN) Coimbatore district in a deep crisis, with nearly 28 lakh trees spread across 40,000 acres facing imminent felling. The distressed TN farmers are calling for urgent help from the state government as they face major losses. The disease, caused by a phytoplasma infection, has been spreading rapidly since 2019. With no effective cure available, farmers have no option but to axe infected trees. Despite Kerala reportedly containing the disease through coordinated efforts, Tamil Nadu's horticulture department has come under criticism for failing to implement meaningful control measures. 'This disease was eradicated in Kerala, but here in Tamil Nadu, the authorities have not taken any serious initiative. The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University researchers have done little more than draw funds for six years without providing concrete solutions,' said M. Saravanan, a coconut farmer from Coimbatore. Tamil Nadu has the second-largest area under coconut cultivation in India, after Karnataka, covering around 12 lakh acres in 29 districts. Coconut is also the second-largest oil crop in the state, after groundnut.

Cryptic FB post raises concerns over fate of MIC

A CRYPTIC Facebook post by Datuk Seri M. Saravanan has sent speculation into overdrive recently, Malaysia Nanban reported. The MIC deputy president, who is also the Tapah MP, wrote in Tamil on his social media page that some problems are not caused by circumstances but could be the work of wolves pretending to be friendly dogs. Most of the responses to the post called for the revival of MIC to its previous position of influence. Many have speculated that the post was related to recent issues facing the Indian community. Saravanan's post comes soon after criticism by Perikatan Nasional chairman and Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin that the Indian community has no credible leaders as MIC continues to stay with Barisan Nasional as part of the unity government. The daily said that as Barisan's influence has waned, so has MIC, which has been left behind in mainstream politics, especially in the eyes of the Indian community. As to who the wolves were, the leaders who spoke to the daily preferred to leave it to the public to decide.

Barisan targets 1,000 fence sitters in last push

The calm before the polls: Two boys cycling past flags of various political parties in Kampung Batu Masjid, Tapah, ahead of the Ayer Kuning by-election. — Bernama TAPAH: Barisan Nasional has identified about 1,000 voters who are still on the fence and will use the last day of the Ayer Kuning by-election campaign to win them over, says Datuk Seri M. Saravanan. 'We have identified about 2,600 Indian voters whom we consider to be 100% 'undi putih' (white voters) or our supporters,' the MIC deputy president told reporters yesterday. 'There are another 1,000 grey voters who haven't stated their stance yet,' he said, adding that the coalition will use various methods to persuade them ahead of polling day tomorrow. 'We are also working to urge those who are outstation to come back and vote,' he said at a press conference during a luncheon with the Indian community in Ayer Kuning here yesterday. Also present was MCA vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Jeck Seng. The by-election will see a three-cornered fight between Barisan's Dr Mohamad Yusri Bakir, Perikatan Nasional's Abd Muhaimin Malek and KS Bawani of Parti Sosialis Malaysia. The by-election was called following the death of its incumbent Ishsam Shahruddin, of Barisan, in February. Saravanan also expressed confidence in Barisan's chances, saying that the only variable is the voter turnout. 'I want to assure Tapah residents that Barisan will win. It's just a matter of the majority,' said the Tapah MP. 'Even if not everyone shows up to vote, I believe the existing support base is already enough to win.' He said the Indian community's support for Barisan will not waver over minor local issues. 'There's no serious local issue here. Maybe one or two clogged drains, but honestly, where in Malaysia do you not find that? 'The Indian community knows who has supported and defended their interests all this while. They remain firm in their support. 'There are, however, certain individuals who are trying to stir up sentiments by bringing up non-issues like illegal temples,' he added.
