Litter of 13 puppies found in Galway City reunited with mother ‘through the power of community'
On Friday, August 8, the Galway-based rescue organisation shared the story of 13 newborn puppies discovered in a remote area off the N59 in Galway, with no sign of their mother. The puppies were found by chance by a teenager and it was unclear whether there were abandoned of if their mother was a stray. Since in the expert hands of MADRA, an appeal was launched to find the mother as concerns grew for her and the puppies' wellbeing. Today, Monday August 11, four days after the desperate appeal was launched, MADRA has announced the heart-warming update the community was hoping for: the puppies have finally been reunited with their mother. In a statement, MADRA said: 'While the pups had been receiving round the clock care from dedicated foster carers, nothing compares to the nourishment and comfort of their own mother. This reunion represents the best possible outcome for both the puppies and their mum.' The Galway charity thanked all those who shared the appeal as they confirmed the puppies had not been abandoned. The mother, MADRA explained, had been frightened, gotten lost, and given birth alone. Her owners, who are not active on social media, were unaware the pups had been found until the appeal reached them. The family is now reunited and the puppies will be available for adoption through MADRA once they are old enough. MADRA added: 'MADRA dogs, the organisation will support them and their mother every step of the way. In keeping with its commitment to responsible animal care, the mother will be spayed once she has fully recovered, ensuring she can enjoy the rest of her life without the strain of further litters. 'MADRA extended heartfelt thanks to everyone who shared its appeal, to the news outlets who amplified the message, and to volunteers for their tireless efforts. This reunion was made possible through the power of community — a shining example of how sharing, caring, and working together can change lives. 'The charity's focus now is on providing ongoing support to the puppies, their mother, and their owners, to ensure the best possible future for them all. Updates on their progress will be shared on MADRA's platforms in the weeks ahead.'

Fundraiser for family of Galway man who died in house fire is launched
'His family have suffered such an unimaginable loss' Friends of a Galway man who died tragically in a house fire have said he 'touched so many lives' as they raise money to help his family. Kevin Kelly died after a fire broke out at a cottage near Casla, a village between Inverin and Carraroe, at around 6am on Tuesday morning, June 3. The 31-year-old died alongside death row survivor Sunny Jacobs, who Kevin had been caring for for in a home-help capacity. He has been remembered as a 'free spirit' who 'went above and beyond' to help others in his life. He was also described as having a love of dogs and spent time volunteering for rescue shelter MADRA. A funeral fund has now been set up in his name with the money raised going towards helping his family with the costs of the funeral, which took place on Saturday. The rest of the funds raised will be donated to Cancer Care West. The GoFundMe page reads: 'Kevin Kelly was a 31 year old man who died tragically in a house fire on Tuesday 3rd of June in Connemara. He was a beloved son, brother, partner and friend who will be incredibly missed. He touched so many lives and made such a positive impact during his short time on earth. 'A passionate dog lover and trainer, who spent many years working for MADRA dog rescue, he was adored by everyone who knew him. He will be remembered in the hearts of many as a 'free spirit' who was always smiling and went above and beyond to help others. His death has shocked an entire community and there is a true feeling of heaviness and sadness in the air. 'Given the very sudden and tragic nature in which he died, I am raising funds in order to help his family cover some of the financial costs of his funeral which took place on June 7 in Discovery Church in Galway. 'His family have suffered such an unimaginable and heart breaking loss. I really wish to ease even a small bit of this hardship and allow them to grieve without having such a huge financial burden also hanging over them. 'We sincerely appreciate any and all support at this extremely difficult time. 'If you are not in a position to donate, please share this fundraiser. 'Any funds raised above the target will be donated to Cancer Care West. They have provided amazing support and care to Kevin's dad and partner who have both recently undergone cancer treatment.' Carer who died in house fire was a 'son, brother, partner, friend and rock'
The funeral service for Kevin Kelly, who died in a house fire in Casla, Co Galway earlier this week has heard that he was born 14 days after his due date and did things his own way from that point on. Mr Kelly (31) died alongside Sunny Jacobs (76) when a fire broke out at her cottage at Gleannicmurrin in Casla on Wednesday morning. Advertisement Mr Kelly was a carer for Ms Jacobs. He also looked after her husband Peter Pringle prior to his death in 2023. Kevin's younger sister Jill told mourners at the Discovery Church on the Tuam Road this afternoon that he was a free spirit who lived to help others. Kevin was born in Dublin but moved to Inishmore with his family at the age of four. The Kelly family subsequently re located to Athenry. Jill said that Kevin loved 'the tranquil life surrounded by the community of Connemara". Mourners were told that Kevin loved dogs even though he was bitten in the face by one at a young age. Jill said that there was a lesson to be learned in how Kevin moved on from this frightening experience and ended up volunteering for the dog welfare charity MADRA. Advertisement Jill said that his time in MADRA was a 'life-changing experience' for her older brother. 'It was where his love of dogs was truly discovered and it was where he met his beautiful (partner) Sheree. Sheree told me this week that the first time she went out to MADRA to volunteer she got out of the car and she said to Kev 'Where do you keep the pit bulls? "And that was it. He was hook, line and sinker (in love). Sheree you and Kevin were made for each other and he loved you so much.' Jill added that they had lost 'a son, a brother, a partner, friend and rock". Kevin is survived by his mother Fiona, his father Ken, Ken's partner Maureen and her son Jonathan, Kevin's partner Sheree, his siblings Jill and Cúán, brothers-in-law Conor and Kal, his nieces and nephew, extended family, friends and neighbours. Following the service a cremation took place this afternoon in Shannon Crematorium at 4pm.
