Construction of new houses for Shanthipuram Colony residents begins
Kochi: Reconstruction of houses has begun for residents in the area known as Shanthipuram Colony, located in 44th division of Kochi corporation in Karanakodam. Corporation has designed the project to construct new houses for 197 families in the colony using Life Mission and CSR funds. The existing houses are very old and lack proper security. "Providing them with safe and secure homes has been one of the long-term goals of the municipality and was announced in the budget. Under the leadership of Azadi Group's Architecture Engineering College, a plan has been prepared to construct apartment complexes in blocks of eight homes each, across three cents," mayor M Anilkumar said. "The expected construction cost for one house is Rs 10 lakh. However, the maximum amount the corporation can provide per family under LIFE scheme is Rs 4 lakh. We are unable to use any other funds for this purpose. The challenge before the corporation was to find the remaining Rs 6 lakh per house. Assurances have been received for CSR funds of Rs 1 crore from BPCL Kochi Refinery and Rs 50 lakh from Sobha Group. Phase I construction activities will commence soon," Anilkumar added. "Division councillor George Nanat also took the initiative to ensure the project becomes a reality," he said.

Kochi canal rejuvenation project gains momentum
KOCHI: Kochi Mayor M Anilkumar on Friday said the canal rejuvenation programme started under the Integrated Urban Regeneration and Water Transport System (IURWTS) project is gaining momentum. The Rs 3,716 crore project includes revitalisation of six major canals in Kochi, inland transportation and tourism. 'The project aims to strengthen water transport systems, construct attractive landscaping and walkways along canal banks, improve water quality by removing accumulated waste in the canals, make water flow smooth, and protect the aquatic ecosystem,' Anilkumar said. The Rs 8.4-crore project prepared for the cleaning of Chilavannur canal is set to be launched, he said, adding that the plan for the beautification of the banks of the Chilavannur canal has been submitted for KIIFB approval. 'The plan is to create a walkway and beautiful public spaces along the banks. The stream flowing from the international stadium joins the Chilavannur stream. The Chettichira bridge on Subhash Chandra Bose Road is very narrow, and thus Rs 4.51 crore has been spent on its reconstruction,' he said. The Kochi corporation and the Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) have also decided to organise a meeting on the project. It will be attended by Industries Minister P Rajeeve and other people's representatives.

Clean sweep: Kochi leads Kerala, ranks 50th nationally
Kochi: Kochi has been adjudged the cleanest city in Kerala, marking a major turnaround in its sanitation efforts. Almost a decade after earning a top spot in the Swachh Survekshan national rankings, the city has once again emerged among the cleaner cities in the country, securing the 50th position in the latest 2024-25 rankings. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now When the rankings were introduced in 2015-16, Kochi stood at 5th place, though only 20 cities were evaluated at the time. As more cities were included in the list in 2016-17, Kochi's rank slipped to 55th and continued to decline, reaching a low of 416th in the most recent previous survey. The city's improved performance is attributed to enhanced waste management efforts, especially at the Brahmapuram solid waste treatment plant, where biomining is in its final stages. Proper waste removal and treatment have played a key role in the city's comeback. In this year's survey, Kochi was ranked 50th nationally in the 'Big Cities: 3–10 Lakh Population' category. Rankings were determined through citizen feedback, evaluation of waste treatment infrastructure and direct field inspections. These covered cleanliness, urban beautification, organic and inorganic waste management and wastewater treatment. "For the first time since the launch of Swachh Survekshan, a city from Kerala has reached the top 50 nationally," said mayor M Anilkumar. "This is a significant achievement, but we must remember that 49 cities are still ahead of us. Our goal is to reach the top, and with the full operation of the CBG plant at Brahmapuram, we can make greater strides." However, despite this progress, Kochi is the only municipal corporation in Kerala yet to be declared a 'clean city' under the Malinya Muktha Nava Kerala project launched by the state govt. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now This puts a question mark on the achievements of clean city Kochi. "While we rank highest in the state and have improved nationally, we still haven't been officially declared a 'clean city'. All other corporations and municipalities in Kerala have achieved this status," said MG Aristotle, secretary of the UDF parliamentary party in the Kochi Corporation. "This clearly shows Kochi still has work to do."

Kochi corporation, CSML meeting to sort out streetlight issues fails
Kochi: A joint meeting convened by Cochin Smart Mission Ltd (CSML) and Kochi corporation on Friday failed to take any key decision on addressing issues related to streetlights in Kochi. Another round of meetings will be convened in the presence of mayor and deputy mayor. The opposition said that the meeting was a farce, as neither mayor nor deputy mayor attended. Councillors expressed dissatisfaction, stating that no effective measures were taken for maintenance of CSML LED lights in the city. Councillors criticized CSML officials for not repairing the lights. CSML officials said that LED lights are yet to be installed along 2,500m as part of the project and that no operation and maintenance contract was signed with the contractors. Opposition leader Antony Kureethara stated that inability to complete the project, which cost Rs 40 crore, is unjustifiable. A UDF councillor suggested providing toll-free numbers to public to report faulty lights, but CSML stated that this is not feasible under current circumstances. The meeting ended with an assurance that another meeting would be called in the presence of mayor, who is an executive member of CSML. Mayor M Anilkumar couldn't attend the meeting as he is under treatment.
