All eyes will be on Indian Navy in the MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup semifinals

In seven previous editions spread over the last 10 years, Indian Railways and Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) have won the MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup hockey tournament thrice each. The two institutional teams have been dominant, have the best players from the country, and have mastered the art of peaking at the right time and absorbing the pressure. Railways, looking for a hat-trick of titles, will have quite a tough battle against arch-rival IOC in the semifinal to be held here on Saturday. In the other semifinal, Indian Navy will take on Indian Army. While three teams — IOC, Railways, and Army — have been regulars in the last four stage and have won the tournament earlier, one team hasn't done so, and will be eager to lay its hands on the coveted trophy. Navy, having not been invited last year due to its poor performance the previous year, has reorganised and recouped under its head coach Ajay Kumar, and has now taken the tournament by storm. Its performance has been near-flawless as it comfortably defeated Karnataka, Central Board for Direct Taxes, the Malaysian National junior team and former champion IOC in Pool-B. The manner of its victory over IOC was a lesson in masterclass. Trailing by a goal, Navy blew away a team that has nearly a dozen International players, in a matter of six minutes in the fourth quarter by scoring three goals. Railways, IOC and Army have been off-colour in the league matches, but one can't take them for granted. Come Saturday, all eyes will be on Navy.

Railways shuts out SAI-NCOE (Bhopal); Navy outwits IOC

Defending champion Indian Railways and Indian Navy scripted an all-win record in their respective pools with impressive victories as the league matches in the MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup invitation hockey tournament came to an end at the SDAT-Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium here on Thursday. Railways scored a comfortable 5-2 victory over SAI-NCOE (Bhopal) in a Pool-A match, while Navy shocked former champion IOC 3-2 in an exciting Pool-B tie. Undoubtedly, Navy has been the standout team in the tournament. The young team has shown remarkable ability to outpace its opponent in every match. With some outstanding players such as strikers K. Selvaraj and Ajinkya Jadhav and midfielder Navin Kerketta, Navy has set an example for others to follow for the right mix of defence and offence. Hitting back After a goalless first two quarters, IOC opened the account towards the end of the third when Olympian V.R. Raghunath converted a penalty corner. Then, in a matter of six minutes, Navy showcased its attacking might by scoring three goals from which the former champion never recovered. K. Selvaraj was the star of the match as he scored a brace. First, he scored by deflecting a shot from a penalty corner taken by Sanjit Toppo and then netted a rebound from the 'keeper Pankaj Rajak. Requiring a victory to make it to the playoffs, NCOE never really showed the stomach for a win as Railways literally closed out the match in the first two quarters by slotting in four goals. Former International Gursahibjit Singh was again the torchbearer for his team with a hat-trick. Friday is a rest day. The results: Pool-A: Indian Railways 5 (Gursahibjit Singh 7, 28 & 59, Darshan Gawkar 21, Shivam Anand 26) bt NCOE Bhopal 2 (Mohit Karma 32, Munish Malik 37). Pool-B: Navy 3 (K. Selvaraj 49 & 55, Ashish Topno 54) bt IOC 2 (V. R. Raghunath 45, Gurjinder Singh 60). Points table (read as team, played, won, draw, loss, points):Pool-A: Railways, 4, 4, 0, 0, 12; Army, 4, 2, 0, 2, 6; HUTN, 4, 1, 2, 1, 5; SAI NCOE (Bhopal) 4, 1, 1, 2, 4; Maharashtra, 4, 0, 1, 3, 1. Indian Army beats Maharashtra to keep its chances alive; Indian Navy sinks CBDT

Certainly, this is not the best Indian Army team that one has witnessed in the MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup invitation hockey tournament. Its forwards haven't stepped up to a great extent, though the defence has been saving grace. To be fair, it has played well within its limitations. Requiring a victory to stay alive in the competition, Army huffed and puffed to a 2-1 win over Maharashtra in a Pool-A contest at the SDAT-Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium here on Wednesday. Army will make it to the playoffs provided SAI-NCOE (Bhopal) loses or draws with defending champion and table-topper Indian Railways on Thursday. NCOE will enter the semifinals in place of Army if the former defeats Railways. Meanwhile, host Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu has been knocked out. Later, in a Pool-B tie, Indian Navy impressed with a 4-1 victory over Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), thanks to a brace each by Selvaraj and Ajinkya Jadhav. Navy, which has entered the last four with three straight wins, will take on former champion IOC in its last group match to decide the group topper. After a drab goalless first quarter, Maharashtra opened the scoring in the second through a penalty corner strike by Ganesh Patil. Within few minutes, Army equalised through a strong counter-attack from the left flank. A swipe by Mohd. Alishan from the backline found Pradeep Singh Bisht, who deftly deflected it home. Maharashtra returned stronger in the third quarter with attacks that rattled the Army defence. First, Arjun Hargude's strike from the top of the circle saw Army 'keeper Senthamizh Arasu come up with a fine save. A few minutes later, a withering backhander by Taleb Shah missed the post by a whisker. With seven minutes remaining for the hooter, Army found the winner when Niraj Kumar Singh took a little time before unleashing a reverse hit after receiving a pass from Rajant Singh. The results: Pool-A: Indian Army 2 (Pradeep Singh Bisht 29, Niraj Kumar Singh 53) bt Maharashtra 1 (Ganesh Patil 21). B: Indian Navy 4 (Ajinkya Jadhav 17 & 35, K. Selvaraj 33 & 36) bt CBDT 1 (Mehkeet Singh 33). Malaysian National junior team 3 (Azimuddin Shakir 29, Muhd. Handzalah 47, Muhd. Adam Asyraf 59) drew with Karnataka 3 (N.M Surya 7, Bhrath Mahalingppa 18 & 32).

MCC-Murugappa Hockey Gold Cup: Railways blank TN 6-0, IOC beat Malaysia

CHENNAI: INDIAN Oil Corporation secured their third win of the tournament when they defeated Malaysia Junior National in a Pool B match in the MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium on Tuesday. After a goalless first half, Gurjinder Singh scored in the 33rd minute for Indian Oil. Sumit Kumar doubled the lead in the 58th minute. The Malaysia Junior National team showed flashes of promise but struggled to convert opportunities against a well-organised IOCL defence. In the second match of the day, Railways delivered a commanding performance defeating Tamil Nadu 6-0 in a one-sided encounter. Gursahibjit Singh and Pankaj Rawat each struck twice as RSPB overwhelmed their southern rivals. Simranjot Singh added a fifth in the 52nd minute, and Shivam Anand capped off the scoring spree two minutes later with another field goal.
