Kota Kinabalu: Sabah has marked a significant milestone with several of its business leaders appointed to top national-level positions in the Malaysia-China Chamber of Commerce (MCCC). The latest reshuffle at national level sees MCCC Sabah President Datuk Dexter Lau elected as Chairman of the MCCC National Business Sectors Committee, the first Sabahan to hold the influential post. Dexter, who also helms the Sabah China Chamber of Commerce, is now tasked with leading policy direction across sectors and building high-impact collaborations between Malaysian businesses and Chinese counterparts. 'This role is a responsibility, not just a recognition. It gives Sabah a wider voice nationally and allows us to bring more attention, resources, and investment to the East Malaysian region,' he said. He said the Sabah team's elevation reflects a growing appreciation of the state's strategic potential and its readiness to contribute to national economic direction. Alongside Dexter, business leader Coral Chia was appointed Vice Chairperson of the Business Sectors Committee. A long-time MCCC national council member, she is expected to work closely with Dexter in strengthening the committee's output. Her appointment also continues the legacy of her mother, Datuk See Meng Geok, who currently serves as MCCC Vice President and has long played an advisory role in national matters. Meanwhile, MCCC Sabah Founding President and Honorary Life Adviser Datuk Lau Kok Sing retains his position as National Affairs Advisor, continuing to offer strategic counsel on policy and institutional development. Also appointed to the national council is Datuk Michael Chin, another former MCCC Sabah President, who now serves as a National Vice President. His years of experience in bilateral business engagement are seen as key to further deepening enterprise-level links. Adding legal strength to the national team is Josephine Wan Wen Hadikusumo, appointed as National Internal Auditor. A senior Sabah-based legal practitioner, her role will focus on governance and compliance within the organisation. Dexter said the appointments mark a turning point for Sabah in terms of visibility and contribution on the national stage. 'We will continue to speak up for East Malaysia and ensure we are fully part of Malaysia's economic conversations,' he said. The MCCC is a key platform facilitating Malaysia-China trade, with branches across the country and deep linkages to industries, entrepreneurs, and policymakers in both nations. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Dexter, Coral and Lau. KOTA KINABALU (July 28): The Malaysia-China Chamber of Commerce (MCCC) has recently announced its latest national-level appointments, in which several representatives from the Sabah have successfully ascended to key central positions — fully showcasing the branch's growing prominence and strategic significance in the national business landscape. These appointments are not only a high-level recognition of the Sabah team's past efforts but also symbolize Sabah's deepening strategic role in driving bilateral trade and economic cooperation between Malaysia and China. He will spearhead efforts to lead national business players in exploring new blueprints for Malaysia-China collaboration, promoting more diversified, higher-quality, and forward-looking economic engagement. His appointment signifies that Sabah's representatives are no longer confined to regional roles but have now risen to become key leaders in shaping national business strategies. 'This appointment not only grants me a broader platform to serve and support the national business community, but more importantly, it allows me to bring Sabah onto wider domestic and international business networks — helping attract more resources and investment into the region. This will benefit not only Sabah but also radiate to Sarawak and Brunei. I will continue to advocate for East Malaysia, ensuring we have a strong voice in the country's economic landscape and contribute dynamic regional energy to Malaysia-China cooperation,' said Dexter. The post of Vice Chairperson of the Business Sectors Committee is held by Coral Chia, who will work closely with Dexter to elevate the committee into a more efficient, results-oriented collaboration platform. Dexter's appointment, MCCC Sabah's Founding President and Honorary Life Adviser, Datuk Lau Kok Sing, continues his role as National Affairs Advisor. With his extensive experience in chamber affairs, he will continue offering visionary input and strategic counsel for the chamber's future direction, policy formulation, and organizational development. His longstanding contribution to the growth of Malaysia-China trade relations makes him a pillar of stability for the national organization. Josephine and Michael. Her solid legal background and extensive professional expertise will help strengthen the chamber's overall financial governance mechanisms, enhance transparency and compliance, and ensure the organization maintains a high level of discipline and auditing standards while continuing to grow. Commenting on these appointments, Dexter stated, 'the fact that the Sabah team has taken up several key national positions is not just an honor, but a responsibility. We will continue to uphold our spirit of professionalism, unity, and progress — not only speaking up for Sabah, but also working hand in hand with our counterparts across Malaysia to harness the strength of the Malaysian business community, seize opportunities from China's vast market, and inject fresh momentum into bilateral economic cooperation.'

Malaysia-China Chamber of Commerce lauds government move on localisation of Oil and Gas Services and Equipment sector
Published on: Thursday, July 10, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 10, 2025 Text Size: Janice Tan Wan Peng encourages Sabahans to build their skills, take hold of local opportunities, and considers ways for overseas talent to return and take part in Sabah's progress. Kota Kinabalu: With local employment opportunities on the rise, there is little reason for Sabah's talent to leave home. Under the leadership of President Datuk Dexter Lau, the Malaysia-China Chamber of Commerce (MCCC) Sabah expresses full support for the Sabah state government's recent collaboration with national oil company Petronas and industry partners to promote localisation in the Oil and Gas Services and Equipment (OGSE) sector, particularly in employment and contract participation. The Chamber welcomes the government's commitment to developing local talent and ensuring long-term, sustainable use of resources. It also believes such localisation efforts should not be confined to the oil and gas industry, but extended across all sectors to benefit more Sabahans. Deputy Secretary-General of the MCCC Sabah Women Entrepreneurs Committee Janice Tan Wan Peng, said the government has continued to expand local job opportunities and offer platforms for skills training and development — presenting a valuable opportunity for Sabahans to showcase their potential. 'By seizing the moment, continuously improving themselves, and mastering new skills, locals can take on key roles and demonstrate the strength and resilience that define the people of Sabah.' She added that development opportunities linked to Sabah's resources and industries should remain in the hands of locals. Tan also acknowledged Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji's leadership in not awarding a recent controversial mining project to external parties — a decision that reflects strong protection of Sabah's interests and commitment to local-first principles. In addition, she highlighted the importance of policies that make it easier for overseas Sabahans to return — such as tax incentives, relocation support, and retraining programs — so they can contribute meaningfully to their home state. Although Sabah is blessed with abundant natural resources, Tan pointed out that equal attention should be given to sustainable management, environmental responsibility, and renewable energy. 'MCCC Sabah is ready to work alongside the government in advancing green policies, and we welcome opportunities to help member companies explore new directions in environmental innovation, circular economy, and clean energy.' Tan also mentioned that fair opportunities should be provided to local businesses — especially small and medium enterprises (SMEs) — in the development of resources and industrial supply chains. Practical policy frameworks and collaborative platforms can enhance local participation and drive stronger economic growth throughout Sabah. MCCC Sabah remains committed to working closely with the state government to support policy implementation and encourage meaningful business engagement — contributing toward a competitive, sustainable, and talent-driven Sabah. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
