Leads Plumbing Workshop at Girls' Construction Camp Inspiring the Next Generation of Female Trades Workers: Oatey Co. Leads Plumbing Workshop at Girls' Construction Camp CANFIELD, Ohio, July 23, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Associates from Oatey Co., a leading manufacturer in the plumbing industry, volunteered for the third consecutive year at the 'Let's Build Construction Careers' Camp for Girls, held June 18 at Mahoning County Career & Technical Center (MCCTC) in Canfield, Ohio. As a returning sponsor, Oatey developed and delivered a hands-on plumbing training designed to introduce campers to real-world skills and career opportunities in the trades. The mission of the 'Let's Build Construction Careers' Camp for Girls is to empower girls ages 12–17 to explore career paths in skilled trades, construction and manufacturing—fields where women have traditionally been underrepresented. This free, week-long program offers experiential learning, field trips and mentorship, providing early exposure to high-demand careers like plumbing, pipefitting, electrical work, welding, drywall installation, bricklaying and more. Oatey volunteers, led by Technical Specialist Jim Eichenser, facilitated a 'Plumbing 101' workshop. Throughout the day, they instructed and mentored campers rotating through skill stations focused on core plumbing fundamentals, including solvent welding PVC pipe, installing washer supply boxes and sink strainers, pulling and setting toilets and soldering copper pipe. 'The level of interest and enthusiasm these campers showed was truly inspiring,' said Eichenser. 'Introducing them to experiences like this early on is so important—not just for building technical skills, but for helping them gain confidence and see the breadth of opportunities in the skilled trades. Exposure like this can be the spark that shapes a future career.' The interactive training format encouraged active participation and created a supportive space for campers to ask questions, try new tools and gain practical insight into plumbing careers. 'Being able to give back and show these young girls what's possible in the trades was incredibly rewarding,' added Sherya Jackson, Associate Product Manager at Oatey and first-time camp volunteer. 'They were eager, capable and asked thoughtful questions throughout the day. It was clear they saw the value in what they were learning. Watching their growth as they moved through each task was a powerful reminder of why programs like this matter.' Two female pipefitters from Local Union 396 also partnered with Oatey to support the soldering station, providing technical guidance and sharing their career journeys. Their presence brought valuable mentorship and perspective, giving campers the opportunity to learn directly from women working in the field. As labor shortages continue to challenge the skilled trades, Oatey's involvement in mentorship and career exploration reflects its commitment to developing future talent and advancing diversity in the industry. Ground broken on new medical facility
CANFIELD, Ohio (WKBN) – Ohio Lt. Governor Jim Tressel attended a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday for a new building at MCCTC. Tressel talked about the amazing foresight someone had years ago to buy the Canfield property and what it's become today. He's also excited about the next step — a new health and wellness center at MCCTC. 'Together, we are building more than a health center. We are building a healthier, stronger and more connected community,' said Kathleen Harley, president of St. Elizabeth Youngstown. The center will expand access to primary and walk-in medical care, including mental health services. It will also create a school-based health clinic and strengthen healthcare training programs. 'The center is more than just a building. It's a bold statement about what we value as a community,' said Matt Kriesic, CEO of Cadence Care Network. The health and wellness center is costing $7 million to build. Over $5 million of that is coming from an Appalachian Community Innovation Centers Grant Program. When finished, the center could serve more than 6,500 people a year, right on location in Canfield. 'So this is critical, what we've always been doing here and now mesh it with health care,' Tressel said. Tressel said Ohio will have about 500,000 more jobs by 2030, and MCCTC has been training people for in-demand careers. 'The workforce needs are extraordinary, but really, we look at it as the workforce opportunities,' Tressel said. The Health and Wellness Center will be open to all. It will offer walk-in care, enabling patients to see a primary care physician the same day with no appointment needed. 'Primary care is the front door to health care, and we know that access improves the outcomes of health,' Harley said. It puts health care and a clinic where people are and ties it to the community. MCCTC is again in the middle of making a difference. 'I can't wait till you come up with one more thing to build. Every time we come out here, he's expanding, making a difference. Construction is expected to be complete in the summer of 2026. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Two arrested on felonious assault charges after gunfire on West Side
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — Two men are expected to be arraigned later Monday in municipal court on felonious assault charges after police answered a pair of gunfire calls late Friday into early Saturday on the West Side. Read next: MCCTC student killed in Portage County rollover crash Austin Smith, 28, and Zachary Tomlin, 30, are both charged with felonious assault, a second-degree felony. They will both be arraigned via video hookup from the Mahoning County jail. The two were arrested after police were called about 11:15 p.m. to the 200 block of Matta Avenue, where a woman told police she was at a concert with Tomlin when her husband — who is named in reports — texted her and said he wanted to meet her to talk. Reports said the woman's husband pulled up at a nearby home and Tomlin was standing outside. Tomlin fired several shots at the husband before running away, reports said. Reports said police found five 9mm shell casings in the street but Tomlin managed to elude officers who were looking for him. About an hour and 15 minutes later at 12:30 a.m. Saturday, police were called to a parking lot at Mahoning and Wesley avenues for a report of a fight with gunfire. Smith was arrested a short time after police arrived. Reports for the second incident are hard to read because of several redactions due to Marsy's Law, but Lt. Mohammad Awad of the Detective Bureau confirmed that the arrests of Smith and Tomlin are related. No one was injured. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Career center hosts competition giving students opportunity to network with employers
CANFIELD, Ohio (WKBN) – The talents of many students are on display Friday at the Mahoning County Career & Technical Center. The school is hosting the Ohio Northeast Regionals SkillsUSA Competition. About 800 students are competing across 30 different skill categories, including cosmetology, crime scene investigation and welding. More than 1,000 are in attendance, including students, educators, industry professionals and local legislators. This event will create opportunities for students to network, collaborate and map out their careers. 'We are training our students in Mahoning County in all of these areas in the trades. So getting tradesmen and tradeswomen in here to judge the competitions, they can hire these students right out of the gate if they see something they like,' said Lisa Schiraldi-Argiro, a cosmetology instructor at MCCTC. The top four in Friday's competition will go to the state competition in March. The top spot at state goes to the national competition in Atlanta. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
