Ex-serviceman held for 4 cr investment fraud

Hyderabad: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) sleuths of Cyberabad police arrested Jetendra Kumar Choubey, an ex-serviceman, for allegedly defrauding investors of 4.48 crore by making them invest in his businesses. Choubey, who retired as naik from MCEME (Military College of Electronics and Mechanical Engineering) in Secunderabad in 2018, established three business entities, including a clinic at Lothkunta and Alwal. He lured investors, primarily other ex-servicemen, by promising monthly returns of 5% on their deposits. The scam came to light when Chandrawati Devi from Bolarum, who runs a beauty parlour in Risala Bazar and invested 2 lakh, filed a complaint after Choubey stopped paying 9,000 monthly returns and disappeared in Dec 2024. A cheating case was registered with the EOW of Cyberabad on Dec 5, 2024. Police investigations revealed that after making initial payments, the accused closed his firms and absconded. Police said that Choubey, along with his associates, duped more than 25 victims of 4.48 crore. "The EOW team arrested Choubey in New Delhi on May 21. He was charged under various sections of the BNS Act and the TSPDFE Act 1999," deputy commissioner of police (DCP), EOW, K Prasad said. The accused was brought to the city and remanded in judicial custody on Thursday.
