Worker Papers Under Scrutiny as Degree Forgers Face Heat
KUWAIT CITY, Aug 9: The Ministry of Electricity and Water (MEW) is planning to request academic certificates from its technical and administrative employees, both citizens and residents, who obtained their qualifications from the year 2000 onward. These certificates will be reviewed by the Civil Service Commission (CSC) to verify their authenticity and combat forgery. According to informed sources, this request follows CSC's request to collect complete data on the higher academic qualifications of all employees, as the ministry falls under CSC's oversight. If any forged certificates are found, the appointments of those individuals will be canceled, and legal action will be taken against them. This aims to enhance job efficiency, uphold the principle of fairness, and enforce the highest standards of integrity and credibility within ministries and government agencies. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy has started the comprehensive review of service fees and audit of employees' academic qualifications, as part of its ongoing effort to ensure fairness and efficiency. In line with its commitment to guarantee fair pricing for essential services, the ministry is conducting a detailed study on electricity and water supply costs, including connection and reconnection procedures. Undersecretary of the ministry Dr. Adel Al- Zamel issued a decision to form a specialized committee, led by Assistant Undersecretary for the Electricity Distribution Networks Sector Eng. Khaled Al-Rashed. The committee has been tasked to review Ministerial Resolution No. 121/2017 and propose amendments based on the results of the evaluation of service costs for all consumer categories.

Memecoin Moo Deng, MEW Surges After Robinhood Listing
Robinhood has added two Solana-based memecoins, Moo Deng MOODENG and cat in a dog's world MEW, to its suite of cryptocurrencies available to trade for U.S. customers. Moo Deng, which is based on a baby pygmy hippo, has risen to a $230 million market cap this month after the meme went viral online in 2024. The token skyrocketed over 836% in May and jumped another 21% over the past 24 hours. Cat in a dog's world, on the other hand, is a token based on cats, which launched in March 2024 as part of a Solana meme coin frenzy. The token stands at a $368 million market cap after its price rose 52% in May. It is up nearly 20% over the past 24 hours. The latest inclusions add to Robinhood's list of meme coins, and the regulatory landscape is becoming much more flexible after the nomination of several pro-crypto government leaders and President Donald Trump's U.S. election win last year. In November, Robinhood added the trading of Pepe coin PEPE, another popular meme coin. The trading app currently offers over 20 cryptocurrencies after previously ending support for several tokens in 2023 amid a crackdown on crypto by the former Securities and Exchange Commission Chair, Gary Gensler. Wales 'On Course to be World Leader' in Marine Energy as Governments Pledge Support
Marine Energy Wales (MEW) has welcomed 'a landmark show of unity and ambition' from the Welsh and UK Governments as they announced significant new investments in Wales's marine renewable energy sector. First Minister Eluned Morgan and Secretary of State for Wales Jo Stevens appeared together at the Marine Energy Wales Conference in Cardiff. Announcements included support for tidal projects Inyanga and Morlais, and a renewed three-year commitment to Marine Energy Wales itself. Speaking at the event, the First Minister confirmed a £2 million equity investment in Inyanga Marine Energy Group. The funding will accelerate deployment of Inyanga's next-generation HydroWing tidal turbines at the Morlais site off the coast of Ynys Môn. The upgraded turbines are expected to increase output by up to 60%, helping unlock the full potential of one of Europe's most ambitious tidal energy zones. This follows a wider £8 million Welsh Government investment in the Morlais project, led by social enterprise Menter Môn, which will improve grid infrastructure and reinforce Morlais as a world-leading tidal demonstration zone, with capacity to power over 180,000 homes. First Minister Eluned Morgan said: 'This investment is a big step forward for Wales' clean energy future. Tidal energy offers reliable, clean power and creates quality jobs in coastal communities where they're needed most. By investing in innovation, we're putting Wales at the forefront of marine energy technology.' Jo Stevens, Secretary of State for Wales, said: 'The UK Government has a clear mission to make the UK a clean energy superpower with Wales front and centre of our plans. This goes hand in hand with our mission to grow the economy and create new, well-paid jobs with renewable energy at the heart of that growth. 'The UK is a world leader in floating offshore wind and tidal stream generation, and Wales is well-placed to benefit from both technologies. There is a huge amount of opportunity ahead and a cleaner, greener future for people in Wales and across the UK.' The conference also saw confirmation of continued core funding for Marine Energy Wales, with the Welsh Government committing a further three years of support. This will enable MEW to continue driving innovation, facilitating collaboration, and supporting the sector's contribution to Wales's net zero goals and coastal prosperity. Marine Energy Wales Programme Manager Tom Hill said: 'This commitment from both governments sends a powerful message — Wales is delivering marine energy. Government support along with stable investment, world-class sites, and a growing cluster of developers and innovators means the sector is poised to scale and make a real impact. Wales is on course to be a world leader as we move into the decade of delivery.' These announcements come at a pivotal moment for the sector, said MEW. As pressure mounts to deliver on climate commitments and reduce dependence on fossil fuels, marine energy offers predictability, resilience, and regional opportunity — all rooted in Wales's natural strengths, it said. Marine Energy Wales will continue to work across governments, industry, academia and communities to turn this momentum into action and ensure Wales leads the charge in marine energy development, it added.

Kuwait's Ministry of Electricity plans 2,000 MW solar power plants
Kuwait's Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy (MEW) is currently studying an initiative to establish four solar photovoltaic (PV) power plants with a combined capacity of 2,000 megawatts (MW), according to a report by local Arabic language newspaper Al Rai. The project is expected to be implemented within a year - by summer 2026 – to address the country's ongoing electricity shortage, which has persisted since last year, the report said. Quoting informed sources in the ministry, the report said solar power projects require significantly less time to complete compared to fossil fuel-based power plants, which typically take three to four years to build, in addition to at least one year for tendering and awarding contracts. Kuwait's is targeting 15 percent share for renewables in its energy mix by 2030. (Writing by Majda Muhsen; Editing by Anoop Menon) (

Kuwait's ministry signs deal for new 3,000 MW power station with ABC Transco
KUWAIT CITY - Dr. Mahmoud Boushehri, Minister of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy, (MEW) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Monday with ABC Transco Limited to establish a power generation station and its related infrastructure, in line with the directives of the political leadership. In a press statement following the signing, Boushehri explained that this MoU is part of the government's strategic vision and efforts to engage the private sector in development projects, particularly in power generation, under the independent supplier system. He noted that ABC Transco Limited, in partnership with General Electric Vernova as a developer, operator, and investor, presented a proposal to the ministry to build a power generation station with a total capacity of 3,000 megawatts, utilizing gas turbines. This project will include all the necessary infrastructure for the power station, such as the main conversion station for delivering electricity to the transmission networks, along with the required water pipelines, fuel lines, and other essential elements deemed necessary for the success of the project. Boushehri emphasized that this MoU is part of ongoing efforts to boost Kuwait's electrical energy production capacity and implement decisions made by the Council of Ministers. Dr. Adel Al-Zamel, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy, also commented on the MoU, stating that the company will be responsible for preparing all the technical and financial studies for the project. These studies will adhere to the Ministry's approved codes, specifications, and international standards for designing, constructing, and operating power generation stations, including the necessary infrastructure requirements. Al-Zamel further explained that if the ministry approves the technical and financial studies, coordination will take place between all involved parties to obtain the necessary approvals from relevant authorities to establish the project. Once the ministry completes the required procedures, it will finalize an agreement to purchase the energy produced by the power station once it is constructed, based on the ministry's needs and after obtaining all necessary regulatory approvals. Bader Al-Razihan, CEO of ABC Transco Limited Energy, added that following the signing of the MoU, a Kuwaiti closed shareholding company will be established, headquartered in Kuwait. This company will focus on building, implementing, operating, managing, and maintaining the power generation station. Al-Razihan highlighted that the new company may offer a portion of its ownership to the government and its affiliates after its establishment, as well as make shares available for public subscription by Kuwaiti citizens once the station is operational. He also emphasized that the company would prioritize employing Kuwaiti workers in accordance with the Public Authority for Manpower's guidelines on nationalization and job quotas. The company will also apply modern technologies to reduce carbon emissions and greenhouse gases, aligning with global environmental standards.
