#SHOWBIZ: Alleycats, Strollers lead 17 acts for 'Giving Through Music' charity concert
PETALING JAYA: Next July 5, Musicians For Musicians Malaysia (MFM) is set to host a star-studded concert featuring some of Malaysia's most renowned 'otai' bands and soloists, all for a good cause. The event, titled 'Giving Through Music', is an eight-hour, non-stop celebration of Malaysian music across the decades. It will feature 17 bands and solo acts, specially organised to raise funds for musicians in need of medical assistance. According Musicians For Musicians Malaysia president Francis Danker, 'Giving Through Music' will take place at Dewan Tunku in Kelab Golf Negara Subang (KGNS) at 3pm. "We are coming together not only to celebrate our shared love for the art form that unites us, but also to embark on a journey of compassion and generosity," said Danker at the concert's recent launch in KGNS. "This concert is a heartfelt initiative aimed at making a meaningful impact in our community." Danker emphasised music's unique power: "Music has a unique ability to transcend barriers, to heal, and to inspire. It unites us in ways that words alone cannot. "With 'Giving Through Music', we aim to harness that power to support the many musicians who are in need, require medical aid, hospitalisation, and face age-related issues." Sadly, Danker noted that the industry had lost several members to illness and medical complications in the past year alone. "Currently, we are assisting a number of our members to help alleviate their medical expenses. Many would recognise household names such as Vernon Steele (amputee), Gerry Felix (cancer), and Zainal Rampa (stroke) who require our support." Danker added that every ticket sold, every note played, and every voice lifted will contribute to a cause close to the musicians' hearts. "We have an exciting line-up of talented artistes who are eager to share their gifts with fans," he said. "With big names from jazz to contemporary, pop to country, our performers will take you on a musical journey that promises to uplift your spirits and ignite your passion for giving." The participating musicians include the legendary Alleycats and Strollers, as well as Stag, Looking Good, Sons Of Adam, Raja Badri Shah, Michelle Nunis, Roland Choi And Stephen Jay, Bala, Revolution, the Michael Veerapen Quartet, Straits Kambradus, Sofa Sundays, Thompsons Country Band, Karen Nunis And The Namahages, Wild Roses, and Kaya.

Rocking For A Cause: Musicians For Musicians To Hold Benefit Showcase This July
Subscribe to our FREE Here's something that'll hit all the right notes – Musicians for Musicians (MFM) is hosting a benefit showcase this 5 July at Kelab Golf Negara Subang, and it's set to be a heartwarming (and foot-tapping) celebration with a purpose. If you haven't heard of MFM yet, they're the good folks standing in solidarity with our local musicians – especially those who've hit hard times. Think financial struggles, health challenges, accidents, and even just the everyday uphill battle of making ends meet in the creative industry. MFM was founded to do something about that, and they've been on a mission ever since: to support, uplift, and empower musicians in Malaysia, one beat at a time. What started as a helping hand has now grown into a full-blown movement. MFM is working to make sure musicians aren't just seen as entertainment, but as professionals who deserve the same security and respect as anyone else. That means fighting for fair pay, access to EPF, Socso, medical coverage, and ensuring musicians don't fall through the cracks when life gets tough. But they're not stopping there. MFM wants to create actual job opportunities, push for equal treatment across the industry, mentor new talent, and build a fairer, more sustainable gig economy for musicians. They're even reaching out to club, pub, and F&B venue owners to build better relationships – and ideally, better conditions – for everyone involved. Our local musicians have been giving us the joy of music, it's time to give back Image: TRP Speaking at a press conference today, MFM president Francis Danker addressed members of the media and a few music artists in attendance to announce the benefit show titled 'Giving Through Music' and share a few inspirational words. 'Music has a unique ability to transcend barriers, to heal, and to inspire. It unites us in ways that words alone cannot. 'With 'Giving Through Music', we aim to harness the power to support the many musicians who are in need, require medical aid, hospitalisation, and facing age-related issues,' he said. Image: TRP Francis highlighted that in the past year alone, the Malaysian music community has already lost a few members and good friends due to illness and medical complications, noting that MFM is already currently assisting a number of their members with their medical expenses. A few household names he mentioned were Vernon Steele who is an amputee, Jerry Felix who is suffering from prostate cancer, and Zainal Rampa who had a stroke. 'Every ticket sold, every note played, and every voice lifted will contribute to a cause that is close to our hearts,' Francis said. READ MORE: READ MORE: A lineup to remember: 17 bands are taking the stage at the show Now, about that benefit showcase – it's shaping up to be epic because 17 bands will take the stage, including none other than the legendary Alleycats (yes, those Alleycats). Whether you're into nostalgic hits or just looking to support a good cause with some good music, it's the place to be. Looking Good, one of the bands on the MFM benefit show lineup, treated the press and other attendees with a soulful rendition of 'How Deep Is Your Love' by The Bee Gees. Image: TRP Another great thing announced at the press conference is the newly-launched MFM website, where both musicians and fans alike can go to as a portal for all things happening in the music scene here. The website's creator, Mark Dylan, told TRP that Mark also highlighted how the MFM official website will act as a ticketing platform to make things more convenient for gig-goers. Just get on the website, see a band you like, and get tickets to the show, all in the same place. Meanwhile, a blog section on the website hosts articles on the music industry, current affairs related to music in Malaysia, news on the artists, and many more topics related to the music scene here. Malayan Flour Mills sees opportunities and challenges ahead
The company said it expects to be profitable for the financial year ending 2025. PETALING JAYA: Malayan Flour Mills Bhd (MFM) believes that the changing geopolitical scene is a dynamic phenomenon that presents both opportunities and challenges for nations around the world. In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, the flour milling company said despite these challenges, it expects to be profitable for the financial year ending 2025. For the first quarter of financial year ended March 31, 2025 (1Q25), MFM's net profit dipped to RM33.09mil from RM37.9mil in the previous corresponding quarter, due to lower profits from the flour and grain trading segment and others segment. Revenue in 1Q25 rose to RM799.29mil from RM751.60mil a year earlier, mainly contributed by higher sales volume from the flour and grain trading segment, amidst lower selling price. Going forward, the company said commodity prices of wheat and grain remain volatile and continue to be impacted by the persisting uncertainties in macroeconomic and geopolitical considerations. 'The company will continue to monitor the impact of commodity prices arising from the global supply and demand dynamics and adjust selling prices accordingly and to diversify the sources of wheat, corn and soybean meal.' Globally, MFM said the poultry industry is adversely impacted by highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza outbreaks, resulting in disruptions in the global supply of grandparent day-old-chicks (DOCs), parent stock DOCs and commercial DOCs. 'Locally, the uplifting of chicken subsidy and ceiling price by the government is seen as a positive development for chicken producers once the supply and demand for poultry reaches an equilibrium. 'However, this equilibrium has been impacted by the weather, which impacts poultry output and import of poultry products from neighbouring countries.' With the expected recovery in the demand and the company's synergistic partnership with Tyson International Holding Co, MFM said it is optimistic of its outlook for 2025 and beyond.

Malayan Flour Mills allocates RM215m capex for FY25
MALAYAN Flour Mills Bhd (MFM) has earmarked RM215 million in capital expenditure (capex) for the financial year ending Dec 31, 2025 (FY2025), with investments focused on expanding its flour and poultry segments in Malaysia and Vietnam. At its AGM today, the group said RM55 million will be allocated to its flour and grain trading (FGT) division to expand capacity and improve efficiency. This includes RM20 million for automation upgrades at its Lumut and Pasir Gudang mills, aimed at reducing manual labour and enhancing product consistency. In Vietnam, MFM is investing RM34 million – RM21 million to expand capacity and upgrade operations in the north, and RM13 million for new flour silos and blending facilities in the south. The remaining RM160 million will be directed to the group's Poultry Integration segment, shared between MFM and its joint venture partner. Of this, RM100 million will go towards new farming infrastructure including parent farms and hatcheries, while RM60 million is earmarked for productivity improvements at existing farms. 'These strategic investments are critical to strengthening our production capacity and operational efficiency, enabling us to meet the growing demand in both Malaysia and Vietnam,' said executive deputy chairman and MD Teh Wee Chye. For FY2024, MFM posted a net profit of RM58.1 million, rebounding from a RM6.7 million net loss a year earlier, thanks to strong FGT performance. The group noted that net profit would have reached RM100.2 million if not for a RM42.1 million impairment on its Indonesian flour operation, which has remained loss-making for three consecutive years. Teh said the group remains optimistic about the long-term prospects of its flour and poultry businesses, and that the capex will be funded via a mix of internal funds and borrowings. 'These initiatives reflect our commitment to solidifying our position as a leading staple food supplier while driving sustainable growth,' he added. –TMR
