Universities in Kerala draw more foreign interest

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala has, it seems, become a revolving door for college students. At a time when an increasing number of Malayali students are moving abroad for their studies, universities in the state are witnessing an influx of applications from foreign countries. International applicants to Kerala University (KU), MG University (MGU), Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat), and Calicut University (CU) have increased manifold in the last four years. Moreover, while students migrating from Kerala prefer to settle abroad, foreign students come here for courses that will help them land better jobs in their home countries. The number of foreign applicants to KU increased by 138% from 1,100 in 2021-22 to 2,620 in 2025-26, while MGU registered a 95.61% jump, from 502 to 982 over the same period. Cusat witnessed the biggest rise, with applications rising to 1,700 this academic year from 603 four years ago. However, only around 10% of these applications result in admissions. Though it's primarily students from African countries, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka who apply, there are applications received from countries such as New Zealand, Thailand, Oman, Egypt, and France, too. Scholarships provided by Indian Council for Cultural Relations and the Study in India programme are primary attractions for foreign students. NAAC accreditation, NIRF and other rankings along with word-of-mouth publicity by former graduates also contribute to rise in foreign applications. Better infrastructure, 24-hour libraries, reading rooms, good hostels are other factors attracting students.

CM Yogi reiterates zero tolerance for land mafia, encroachments

Expressing concern over the rising number of land-grabbing cases, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath has directed officials to take prompt legal action against culprits. (Sourced) During the Janata Darshan held at Digvijay Nath Auditorium in the Gorakhnath Temple complex on Sunday morning, the chief minister heard grievances of over 200 people, stressing that each issue must be resolved and relief provided to those in distress. Responding to several applications seeking financial assistance for medical treatment, CM Yogi assured full government support. He instructed officials to promptly prepare cost estimates and submit them to the administration without delay. Moved by the plea of a wheelchair-bound man, Yogi personally assured him that lack of funds would not obstruct his treatment. Meeting with doctors Earlier on Saturday night, CM Yogi chaired a meeting with over 125 doctors at the Gorakhnath Temple conference hall. He emphasised that no patient should return untreated and that financial constraints must not hinder treatment, particularly in critical cases. He praised the medical teams for facilitating tele-ICU support from Medanta Hospital and for involving retired AIIMS doctors in consultations. The chief minister also announced that CT scan and MRI services would begin next month at the MGU campus hospital in Balapar, which is already equipped with advanced infrastructure. Inspection CM Yogi also conducted an extensive inspection of ongoing development works across Gorakhpur on Saturday night. He reviewed construction progress at eight key locations, including Jageshwar Pasi Chauraha, Harhawa Phatak, Om Nagar, Ali Nagar, and Pandey Hata. The chief minister stressed the importance of speed, transparency, and public convenience in all infrastructure projects. He directed officials to ensure that fair compensation is provided to individuals whose homes or shops were demolished for road widening or heritage corridor development. He also voiced concern over waterlogging issues and instructed the implementation of effective drainage systems, particularly near Hathwa Phatak, in coordination with the railway authorities. Inspecting the construction of a railway overbridge at Hathwa Phatak, CM Yogi directed that the project be completed within 18 months. He also ordered that proper drainage systems be included on both sides of the bridge to prevent future flooding.

Little Afghani girl steps into world of letters from Kottayam

As classrooms across the State filled with the chatter of children and the scent of fresh books on Monday, it was a six-year-old girl from Afghanistan who captured hearts in Kottayam. Clutching her new school bag and dressed in a crisp yellow frock, Behsa Karimi walked into Government LP School, Mudiyoorrkkara, with wide eyes and an eager smile. This bright young girl, originally from Herat in Afghanistan, is one of 16 students who joined Grade I this year. Behsa is the daughter of Mohammad Fahim Karimi, a 33-year-old research scholar in Management Studies at Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU), and Ellaha Zahir. Though her roots lie in the rugged landscapes of Afghanistan, Behsa's early learning has begun right here in Kottayam, where she also attended pre-school. This made her the star of the school's reopening ceremony on Monday. It's the first time the school here has welcomed a student from another country and the teachers were thrilled. Headmistress Sindhu K. and her team greeted Behsa with open arms. Soon, she was exploring her classroom, exchanging shy giggles with new friends and adapting to the rhythm of her new school life. 'She speaks more Malayalam than I do,' Fahim chuckled. 'Though I came here five years ago, I barely know ten words in this language. But Behsa will have no trouble picking up the nuances here. She's already at home,' he said Fahim first arrived in Kottayam in 2021 to pursue his postgraduate studies. Now a research scholar at MGU, he still has two more years of research to complete and the family is currently settled near Thellakom. During this time, Kottayam will remain home for the Karimi family, and for Behsa this school will be her world. On her very first day, she received her textbooks, uniform and school bag from the school. While Fahim and Behsa are here on student visas, her mother and two year old sister, Behar, are on dependent visas.
