Zahid: Malaysia must use Asean chair to grow halal exports into 600 million-strong regional market

BUTTERWORTH, May 12 — Malaysia should seize the opportunity of its Asean Chairmanship in 2025 to expand the market for halal products and penetrate the Asean market, which comprises a population of 600 million, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamid. He said that although halal products from Indonesia and Thailand are marketed in Malaysia, local halal products have yet to penetrate the Asean market due to insufficient marketing efforts. 'Since 600 million is a realistically large market for Malaysian halal products, the efforts by the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) are geared towards expanding the market among Asean countries,' he said. He was speaking to reporters after launching the Penang Halal Industry Development Council here today, which was also attended by Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow and Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) Chairman Datuk Seri Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki. As such, Ahmad Zahid, who is also Malaysian Halal Industry Development Council chairman, proposed the establishment of an Asean Halal Council and the organisation of an Asean Halal Forum this September. He said the Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS) will also feature halal products and invite Asean industry players for 'business matching' with potential importers. In addition, he said Malaysia is also collaborating to expand the production of halal gelatine-which currently has only one producer in the country-for both Asean and international markets, as existing gelatine products lack the proper standards required for other halal products. 'This includes sectors such as medicine, cosmetics, and others, because we tend to focus only on the food and beverage (F&B) service sector, when in fact, other sectors hold vast market potential and should be further developed,' he said. Meanwhile, Ahmad Zahid noted that Malaysia possesses a comprehensive halal ecosystem, including halal certification recognised by 92 foreign halal certification bodies from 48 countries. At the same time, he congratulated Penang for becoming the first state in Malaysia to establish a Halal Industry Development Council. Malaysia continues to lead the global halal industry, recording exports valued at RM61.79 billion in 2024, a 15 per cent increase from 2023, and maintaining the number one position in the Global Islamic Economy Index for ten consecutive years. — Bernama

Malaysia's halal product exports up 15% to RM61.79bil in 2024

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's halal product exports reached RM61.79 billion in 2024, marking a 15 per cent increase from RM53.72 billion recorded in the same period of 2023, said Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Aziz. He noted that Malaysia has maintained its top position in the Global Islamic Economy Indicator rankings for 10 consecutive years, ahead of Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, and the United Arab Emirates. "Malaysia's strength lies in Islamic finance, halal food, as well as media and recreation. "The halal industry constitutes a significant portion of Malaysia's gross domestic product (GDP), with projections estimating a 10.8 per cent contribution or RM231 billion by 2030. This growth is primarily driven by a robust halal ecosystem across sectors such as food, finance, and travel,' he said. He made these remarks in his officiating speech at the soft launch of the 21st Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS) 2025, here today. The speech was delivered by deputy secretary-general (Industry) Datuk Hanafi Sakri. Tengku Zafrul said the global demand for halal products is currently valued at over US$3 trillion and is expected to grow to US$5 trillion by 2030, underscoring the global appeal of halal's ethical and sustainable attributes. "Malaysia's leadership in this sector is a testament to our continued innovation and dedication. "Among the major international halal market players are Nestlé, Allana Group, Cargill Incorporated and Fraser & Neave. I am proud to note that several Malaysian companies such as DagangHalal Group, Prima Quality Food Industries, Kawan Food Bhd , Crescent Foods, QL Foods Sdn Bhd, and Ayamas Food Corporation, are also recognised among the top players globally,' he said. He highlighted that this year's MIHAS theme, "Pinnacle of Halal Excellence', reflects its standing as the world's leading and most prestigious halal showcase. "With greater international participation anticipated, MIHAS 2025 is set to be larger and more dynamic than previous editions. It will showcase the latest halal products, services, and technologies, highlighting the industry's latest advancements,' he said. MIHAS 2025 is scheduled to take place on Sept 17-20, 2025, at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC). Tengku Zafrul also stated that halal-related initiatives are part of the Priority Economic Deliverables for 2025 (PEDs), particularly in the context of Malaysia's ASEAN chairmanship. "Malaysia is actively promoting the halal industry as a key driver of economic growth and regional cooperation. "There will be a dedicated pavilion representing ASEAN's halal industry, as well as a special pavilion for companies from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), which is a strategic partner of ASEAN, featured at MIHAS this year,' he shared. He also noted that MIHAS's internationalisation effort debuted in Dubai last year and will continue with an edition in Shanghai this November. Since its inception in 2004, MIHAS has expanded from 500 booths to 2,100 booths in its most recent edition. "I would like to highlight that the 20th edition of MIHAS marked a record-breaking achievement for both the Ministry of Investment, Trade, and Industry and the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation, recording RM4.3 billion in sales,' he said. To date, MIHAS has generated nearly RM30 billion in export sales and attracted 12,000 local and international halal industry players, along with over 500,000 trade visitors from around the globe. Additionally, over 7,000 international buyers have been matched with 10,000 Malaysian companies through MIHAS's flagship business programme, the International Sourcing Programme (INSP). - Bernama

MIHAS 2025 targets RM4.5bil in global halal trade

KUALA LUMPUR: The 21st Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS) aims to generate RM4.5 billion in global halal trade for 2025, driven by its artificial intelligence-powered Madani Digital Trade (MDT) platform. The MDT platform, launched in March, is designed to connect businesses, match trade partners, and support cross-border halal trade, particularly for small and medium enterprises. MIHAS is hosted by the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry (Miti) and organised by the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade). Last year, the halal trade exhibition recorded RM4.3 billion in sales and attracted more than 43,000 visitors from 90 countries. Miti deputy secretary-general (Industry) Datuk Hanafi Sakri said the halal industry is projected to contribute 10.8 per cent, or RM231 billion, to Malaysia's gross domestic product by 2030. Globally, he said demand for halal products is valued at over US$3 trillion and is expected to reach US$5 trillion by 2030, fuelled by growing interest in ethical and sustainable consumption. "Malaysia continues to maintain its top position in the Global Islamic Economy Indicator rankings for 10 consecutive years, followed by Saudi Arabia, Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates. "Malaysia's strength lies in Islamic finance, halal food, as well as media and recreation," he said at the Mihas soft launch event here today. Matrade chairman Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican said the theme 'Pinnacle of Halal Excellence' reflects Malaysia's efforts to highlight innovation and global leadership in the halal sector. He said MIHAS 2025 will also showcase the diversity of Asean cultures to encourage business collaboration and dialogue. "Despite the complexities of the current global trade landscape, such as the recent tariff impositions, we maintain our strong commitment to achieving a minimum of 5.0 per cent export growth towards the RM1.58 trillion target set for the year," he said. Following its first international edition in Dubai last year, the next global installment of MIHAS will take place in Shanghai this November, as part of the China International Import Expo (CIIE). "The Shanghai edition will also showcase a comprehensive range of halal offerings that would further facilitate valuable business connections between international suppliers and Chinese distributors and retailers," Reezal Merican added. MIHAS 2025 will run from Sept 17 to 20 at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre, featuring 14 industry clusters, including food and beverages, pharmaceuticals, Islamic finance, modest fashion, and Islamic art and crafts.
