HC dismisses petitions againstsmart electricity meter mandate

Bengaluru: The Karnataka high court Wednesday rejected two petitions challenging the state govt's decision to mandate the installation of smart prepaid meters by temporary and new consumers. The equipment is priced at Rs 8,800-8,900, compared to Rs 900 in neighbouring states. Justice M Nagaprasanna, who reserved his verdict on the petitions on July 22, noted that a PIL raising similar issues is already pending before a division bench of the high court. "In light of the identical issues and all proceedings pending before the division bench, judicial discipline demands that this court hands off the present petitions. Therefore, the subject petitions are not entertainable... The advocate general undertook during these proceedings that the respondents would not insist upon the installation of smart meters at the residential premises, if any, of these petitioners in both cases, as they are not new installations. In that light, these petitions are rejected," the judge added.
