MLA hostel row: Mumbai police register non-cognizable complaint against Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad
The Mumbai police on Friday registered a non-cognizable (NC) complaint against Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad for assaulting a canteen worker after he was allegedly served stale food in his room at the MLA Hostel late on Tuesday. A purported video of the incident had gone viral, and Gaikwad received flak for his actions. While Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said his behaviour had tarnished the image of the legislature, Gaikwad's party leader and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said he had reprimanded the MLA. The Marine Drive police station lodged a suo motu NC complaint against Gaikwad, who represents Buldhana in the Maharashtra Assembly, and his aide in a red shirt, who is also seen beating the canteen worker in the video. 'We have lodged an NC under sections 115(2), 352 and 3(5) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita,' an officer from the Marine Drive police station said, referring to sections dealing with the charges of voluntarily causing hurt and intentional insult with intent to provoke breach pf peace, among others. The development comes in the wake of Fadnavis stating that action would be taken in the case. On Tuesday, Gaikwad reportedly entered the MLA hostel canteen wearing a towel and a vest, and confronted the staff over what he claimed was sour dal and spoiled rice. He then allegedly slapped and punched the canteen operator and instructed others not to pay their bills. His supporters, too, joined him and assaulted the canteen staff. Gaikwad later told reporters he had complained about food quality on multiple occasions, but no action was taken. 'If such food is being served to an MLA, imagine what the common man must be getting,' he said. Gaikwad was also unapologetic about his actions. 'People from all across the state come here; workers and officials come here to eat. The quality of food should be good here as it is a government canteen. I have no regrets over what I did. I am a public representative… when someone fails to understand democratic language, then I have to use this language. I had complained to concerned authorities on several occasions. I don't regret it and I will repeat it if needed…', the MLA had said. The canteen was operated by a private contractor, Ajanta Caterer, under the supervision of the Legislature Secretariat. The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday issued a suspension notice to the caterer following an inspection of the premises. 'The licence granted to your establishment from 26-06-2024 to 27-09-2027 is being suspended with immediate effect… You or anyone on your behalf should not buy, sell or distribute food items. If found doing so, legal action will be taken as per the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006,' the FDA order stated.

‘Don't regret it. Will repeat it if needed': Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad beats canteen worker over ‘stale food'
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad allegedly assaulted a canteen worker after he was allegedly served stale food in his room at the MLA Hostel in Mumbai late Tuesday. Gaikwad, who represents Buldhana in the Maharashtra Assembly, reportedly entered the hostel canteen wearing a towel and a vest, and confronted the staff over what he claimed was sour dal and spoiled rice. He then rained slaps and punches on the canteen operator, and instructed others not to pay their bills. His supporters, too, assaulted the canteen staff. Gaikwad later told reporters he had complained about food quality on multiple occasions, but no action was taken. 'If such food is being served to an MLA, imagine what the common man must be getting,' he said. Meet Shah Sena's MLA Sanjay Gaikwad. Last year he had threatened&announced 11 lakh rupees to anyone who cuts off Sh. Rahul Gandhi's tongue. Now the man is seen beating up a poor helpless canteen worker. But wait no news TV outrage here since its a BJP ally — Priyanka Chaturvedi🇮🇳 (@priyankac19) July 9, 2025 On Wednesday, Gaikwad said he doesn't regret his action, and he may repeat it if needed. He said the food served to him was of poor quality, and that he would raise the issue during the ongoing Monsoon Session of the Maharashtra Assembly. 'I had complained about the poor quality of food two or three times. This time, the food was absolutely unacceptable and completely spoiled. I will raise this issue in the ongoing legislative session,' he said. 'People from all across the state come here; workers and officials come here to eat. The quality of food should be good here as it is a government canteen. I have no regrets over what I did. I am a public representative… when someone fails to understand democratic language then I have to use this language. I had complained to concerned authorities on several occasions. I don't regret it and I will repeat it if needed…' A video of the incident, which shows the MLA shouting at staff and striking one of them, has since gone viral on social media, drawing criticism over his conduct. No official complaint had been filed at the time of publication of this report. The canteen is operated by a private contractor under the supervision of the Legislature Secretariat. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut questioned the government's responsibility in the matter. 'If the dal (lentils) is of poor quality, who is responsible? It's your government. This is the same quality of food being given to tribal communities and poor people in Maharashtra. Modi is distributing free grains—everyone should examine their quality too,' Raut said. 'Only MLAs have received Rs 50 crore; contractors haven't. There is corruption even in the canteen. But instead of raising the issue properly, the MLA resorted to violence. This is not how law and order should work. If you didn't like the food, there are proper channels to complain. Raise the issue in the Assembly. Assaulting a poor staff member is not acceptable,' he added. Raut also claimed that he informed Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis about the incident on X, and demanded action. He emphasised that the assaulted worker deserves a chance to present his side in the Maharashtra Assembly and should not be punished for systemic failures.

Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad slaps canteen staff in Mumbai over stale food, ‘no regrets'
'The food was stale,' said Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad as he justified assaulting an employee of a canteen at the MLA Hostel in Mumbai, a video of which has gone viral. He plans to raise 'the issue' now in the ongoing monsoon session of the Maharashtra assembly. Sanjay Gaikwad in the viral video, holding up a packet of the dal that he said was stale and responsible for his actions.(Video grab/X/@silenteyes0106) Political opponents, particularly the Congress, have recalled how Gaikwad — from deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena — is the man who last year announced ₹11 lakh as reward to anyone who could cut off Rahul Gandhi's tongue over a statement he had made about reservations. In the viral video, Gaikwad is seen abusing the canteen operator, refusing to pay the bill, and then slapping a staff member who was at the billing counter. He goes on to push and shove others too. He had ordered dinner from the canteen on Tuesday night and found the dal-rice delivered in his room to be stale and foul-smelling. He left his room fuming and stormed into the canteen, where he got violent. He told others present there, too, not to pay for the food. He later spoke to PTI about the episode, and stressed he had no regrets. 'When someone fails to understand democratic language, then I have to [use] this language only,' he told the news agency. He added that his violence was not the same as that by MNS and Shiv Sena (UBT) workers: 'I didn't thrash him seeing whether he is Marathi or Hindi-speaking. I had complained to concerned authorities on several occasions. I will repeat it.'

Tripura Congress leader Sudip Roy Barman says ‘BJP leaders urinate on tribals', protesters break open MLA Hostel gate demanding apology
A large group of activists of Tripura's ruling BJP stormed into the MLA Hostel in Agartala on Wednesday by breaking open its gate, demanding Congress legislator Sudip Roy Barman apologise and resign over his remarks that 'BJP leaders urinate on tribals'. 'As an MLA, he should resign immediately for hurting the dignity of tribals,' BJP tribal leader Bipin Debbarma told reporters. Tribal Affairs Minister Bikash Debbarma and BJP state president and Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee also condemned Barman's remark, made in Ambassa on Tuesday. While Debbarma warned that the Congress leader should face legal action if he did not apologise, Bhattacharjee said the remark reflected the Opposition party's mindset on tribals. 'Tribals in Tripura never got respect and dignity before the BJP came to power. The airport has been named after Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya (last serving king of Tripura). We have got tribal ministers in Tripura, a tribal leader of Tripura (former deputy CM Jishnu Debbarma) was made the governor of Telangana. Nationally, a tribal person is serving as the President of India. What more respect can one give?' said the tribal affairs minister. Debbarma further said that Barman's comment hurt tribal sentiments. In Dhalai, Rajib Bhattacharjee accused Sudip Roy Barman of having clandestinely helped communists stay in power in exchange of favours during the long Left Front rule, and said that he had never worked for tribals. For his part, Sudip Roy Barman said, 'I didn't manufacture any report but simply stated the fact that BJP karyakartas urinated on tribals in Madhya Pradesh. The reality is that the BJP hates Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, OBC, minorities etc. How else can someone urinate on another person?' The Congress leader was referring to an incident in Madhya Pradesh's Sidhi district where Pravesh Shukla, purportedly a BJP activist, urinated on a member of the Kol tribe last year. A massive security bandobast was made in front of the MLA hostel but protesters defied the barricades chanting slogans against Sudip Roy Barman. Kiran Kumar, Superintendent of Police, West Tripura, said the situation was brought under control.
