Former Giants managing general partner, longtime lead Microsoft attorney Bill Neukom dies at 83
Jeremy Tache and David Samson recap an unforgettable MLB All-Star Week that included a celebration of Hank Aaron, the Home Run Derby, and more. SAN FRANCISCO — Former San Francisco Giants managing general partner Bill Neukom, a bow-tie loving, longtime Microsoft attorney who was at the helm when the team won its first World Series title in 2010, has died. He was 83. The team announced Neukom's death Thursday. No additional information was provided. Neukom retired from his role following the 2011 season and after the Giants captured the 2010 World Series for their first of three every-other-year titles that included championships in 2012 and 2014. The 2010 victory marked the first for the team since moving West in 1958. 'Bill will always hold a special place in our hearts and in the history of this franchise,' Giants CEO Larry Baer said in a statement. 'He was instrumental in helping this organization and its players bring the first World Series Championship to San Francisco in 2010. Bill will always be remembered for not only his leadership of this storied organization but also his colorful bow ties and the fact he'd bring a glove to the ballpark to try and catch foul balls. He was a true gentleman, a dedicated fan and a friend to so many.' An avid runner who completed more than a half-dozen marathons, Neukom first joined the ownership group in 1995 and became a general partner in 2003. When Peter Magowan retired after the 2008 season, Neukom became managing general partner. He developed a catchphrase called 'The Giants Way' of playing baseball. 'My idea is that we adhere to it at the minor-league level and all the way up,' Neukom said when introduced in October 2008. 'It's how you play the game, conditioning, fundamentals, a rigorous spring training regimen, everything. We want the best talent, the best teachers, the best leaders, the best trainers, and we want to have better communication on what we want and how we want it done.' After retiring, Neukom remained involved with the Giants as chairman emeritus. He grew up in nearby San Mateo rooting for the Giants and with then-San Francisco Seals owner Charlie Graham as a neighbor. Neukom also loved riding horses and stayed active despite undergoing hip replacement surgery during his Giants tenure. Serving as top counsel for Microsoft billionaire Bill Gates, Neukom was the company's lead lawyer for nearly 25 years. His Microsoft stake was worth an estimated $107 million when he left in 2001. He was a partner in the Seattle office of the law firm Kirkpatrick & Lockhart Preston Gates Ellis. He also was a past president of the American Bar Association, serving in 2007-08. Neukom also founded the World Justice Project in 2006, a multinational, multidisciplinary initiative to strengthen the rule of law worldwide. --- AP MLB:

Yankees' Aaron Boone Hints All-Star Swing-Off Could Come to 'Regular Season Mix'
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The New York Yankees are coming away from the All-Star festivities with some memorable moments, but a win for the American League in the Midsummer Classic itself wasn't among them. After Jazz Chisholm Jr. logged an underwhelming round in the Home Run Derby, he and teammates Aaron Judge and Carlos Rodon, plus manager Aaron Boone, were part of a thrilling All-Star Game that saw the National League win in historic fashion. "After finishing nine innings all tied up, the Major League Baseball All-Star Game was decided by a swing-off for the first time, with the National League emerging victorious after blowing a six-run lead over the final three innings," Jesse Yamtov, Gabe Lacques and Bob Nightengale reported for USA Today. "Trailing 3-1, (Philadelphia) Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber came through in the clutch, homering on all three of his swings to put the NL ahead." The tiebreaker capped off what is being praised as a significant win for Major League Baseball, as other sports leagues struggle to generate fan interest in their own All-Star events. And the tiebreaker format was so successful that Boone suggested it could be implemented in regular season games as well. (Photo by New) More Yankees/Getty "It will be interesting to see where it goes," Boone said after the game, according to the USA Today team. "There's probably a world where you could see that in the future, where maybe it's in some regular season mix. I mean, I wouldn't be surprised if people start talking about it like that." MLB has made some changes to the conclusion of tied games in recent years, adding an automatic base runner at second base beginning in the 10th inning for regular season matchups. It has also floated the possibility of a "golden at-bat" that would allow teams to pick their best hitters for an extra plate appearance in certain situations. Though bringing the swing-off into the regular season might be a bridge too far for some fans, the success that the format enjoyed in the All-Star Game could lend credence to the idea. What Are The 10 Longest Home Runs in MLB Home Run Derby History?
MLB All-Star Week brings a lot of buzz and excitement. The Home Run Derby is certainly a reason for that, if not the biggest reason for all the buzz that takes place during the All-Star festivities. The 2025 MLB Home Run Derby will take place at Atlanta's Truist Field on Monday evening. Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh, who leads the league in home runs, headlines the field alongside other stars like Byron Buxton, James Wood and Matt Olson. Could one of these players hit one of the longest home runs in the history of the event? Only time will tell. Ahead of tonight's event, here's a look at the 10 longest home runs in the history of the Home Run Derby. 10 Longest HRs in Home Run Derby History T-10. Shohei Ohtani: 513 feet (2021) Ohtani's Home Run Derby debut was highly anticipated, and he delivered a show for fans that night. The then-Los Angeles Angels star hit 28 home runs in the first round, with his final homer being a 513-foot blast that went well into the top deck of the right field bleachers at Coors Field. Unfortunately for Ohtani, his opponent was able to hit more homers in the opening round, knocking him out before the semifinals (more on that soon). T-10. Aaron Judge: 513 feet (2017) As Judge burst onto the scene as a rookie in 2017, he made a loud Home Run Derby debut that year with a statement win. In the semifinals, Judge hit a 513-foot shot that might have left the park if the stadium weren't enclosed. 9. Pete Alonso: 514 feet (2021) Ohtani was just one of a handful of participants who hit a 500-plus-foot home in the 2021 Home Run Derby. Playing in the hitter-friendly Coors Park, Alonso hit a 514-foot homer that nearly hit the video board behind the left-field bleachers in the first round. That was one of Alonso's 35 homers in the round, which was a record at the time, as he went on to win the derby for the second consecutive year. 8. Bobby Abreu: 517 feet (2005)** It takes a lot to hit a ball out of Comerica Park, but Abreu did that in 2005, blasting a 517-foot homer that cleared the right-field bleachers and the porch behind it. That was one of his 41 homers that night, as he went on to win it all. T-5. Sammy Sosa: 518 feet (2002)** The Chicago Cubs legend put on a show at the Home Run Derby in then-Miller Park in 2002, hitting several home runs that landed in the highest deck of the left-field bleachers or near the slide in the stadium. T-5. Josh Hamilton: 518 feet (2008)** Hamilton had a night for the ages in the final season of baseball at the old Yankee Stadium in 2008. He hit a then-record 28 home runs in the first round. One of those was a 518-foot shot that ricocheted off the wall behind the right-field bleachers. While Hamilton hit the most home runs that night, he actually lost in the final to Justin Morneau. T-5. Trevor Story: 518 feet (2021) The then-Colorado Rockies star looked comfortable at his home ballpark in the 2021 Home Run Derby. One of his home runs was a 518-foot blast that traveled to the last row of the bleachers behind the left-center field wall. While Story hit 19 home runs in the opening round, he lost to Joey Gallo by one in their head-to-head matchup. 4. Frank Thomas: 519 feet (1994)** The top deck of the bleachers at the old Three Rivers Stadium was really far from home plate. That's why it amazed fans when Thomas hit a 519-foot homer that hit the wall at the bottom of the top deck of the bleachers behind the left-center field wall in 1994. While Thomas hit the highlight home run that day, Ken Griffey Jr. won that year. T-2. Sammy Sosa: 520 feet (2002)** Sosa's second-longest home run of the 2002 Home Run Derby landed along the edge of the bleachers in the top deck behind the left field face at then-Miller Park, drawing oohs and aahs from fans and his fellow All-Stars. T-2. Juan Soto: 520 feet (2021) Soto hit the longest home run of the four homers hit during the 2021 Home Run Derby on this list. His 520-foot homer landed in the middle of the top deck in the right field bleachers, helping him beat Ohtani in the first round. He lost to Alonso in the semifinals. 1. Sammy Sosa: 524 feet (2002)** Unofficially, Sosa hit the longest home run in the history of the derby as part of his laser show in 2002. Even though Sosa's 2002 performance has three home runs that appear on this list, Jason Giambi beat him in the final that year. **Unofficial measurement Check out all of our Daily Rankers .
