Part of Market Street in Philadelphia's Old City neighborhood will close for months due to construction

Part of Market Street in Philadelphia's Old City neighborhood will be closed for up to three months as the city begins construction on Monday aimed at making the road safer. The Streets Department announced on Sunday that the partial closures and detours on Market Street will begin on Monday between Front and 6th streets. The project, named the Market Street Old City improvement project, will include sidewalk-level bike lanes, concrete bus boarding bump-outs and left turn lanes, according to the city. When the project was introduced, the city hoped it would be completed in time for the country's 250th birthday in 2026, as Philadelphia is set to host multiple events, including the MLB All-Star Game, FIFA World Cup matches and more. The city said the westbound lane of Market Street from 2nd and 6th streets will be closed, and westbound traffic will be detoured to Arch Street. Eastbound traffic will get by on Market Street with two lanes from 6th to 5th streets, and then one lane from 5th Street to Front Street, the city said. According to the city, businesses and residences along Market Street will still be accessible during the construction. Temporary loading and delivery areas will be provided on Market Street and nearby cross streets depending on where construction is underway. SEPTA stations, including 2nd and 5th Street stations on the Market-Frankford Line, will both remain open with temporary elevator and staircase closures. The city says that bus stops on Market Street and cross streets nearby might be affected by the closure. Riders should follow SEPTA alerts for the latest info and look for posted signage along Market Street for the stops. The city says the Navy Yard Shuttle will stop at 6th and Market streets, and riders should follow the shuttle's website for updates.

MLB names iconic Wrigley Field as host of 2027 All-Star Game

Chicago's Wrigley Field, the historic ballpark which opened in 1914, will serve as the host venue for the 2027 Major League Baseball All-Star Game, MLB announced on Friday. Known for ivy-covered outfield walls and an old-style marquee, Wrigley Field is the second-oldest stadium in MLB, two years younger than Boston's Fenway Park, and offers seating for about 41,650 spectators. The famed home of the National League Cubs, known to fans as the Friendly Confines, offers a classic look and style with more than a decade of work done to modernise the venue. "The hard work put in to transform all of Wrigleyville into an outstanding destination deserves to be celebrated and shared on a national stage," MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement. "We look forward to bringing the Midsummer Classic back to historic Wrigley Field and working alongside the Cubs, city and state officials, and the local organizing group to bring an extraordinary experience to the baseball fans of Chicago." The Cubs, who snapped a 108-year World Series title drought in 2016, will host the All-Star Game for the first time since 1990 on Tuesday, July 13, 2027. Wrigley was also the site of All-Star Games in 1947 and 1962. Next year's All-Star Game will be staged in Philadelphia. "We can't wait to showcase how we have preserved this iconic ballpark," Cubs executive chairman Tom Ricketts said. "Wrigley Field means so much to Cubs fans and millions of people who have visited what we believe is a baseball cathedral." Chicago's City Council passed a plan last month to improve security measures around the ballpark, where neighborhood bars abound. Cubs second baseman Ryne Sandberg was a starter in the 1990 All-Star Game. The Hall of Fame infielder died on Monday and fans have left flowers, photos and other momentos at the base of Sandberg's statute outside the ballpark. js/dmc

Smoltz: If Shohei Ohtani Only Pitched, 'He'd be the Best Pitcher in Baseball'

John Smoltz knows pitching. He's in the Baseball Hall of Fame for making a career out of it as both a starter and a closer, and the FOX Sports' analyst made it clear how he feels about the talent of Shohei Ohtani when he's on the mound. "If all he did was pitch, he'd be the best pitcher in baseball." Smoltz was speaking to a panel of FOX Sports' analysts previewing Tuesday's 2025 MLB All-Star Game, when fellow Cooperstown inductee David Ortiz asked him about the chances of Ohtani pitching in this year's game. Smoltz does not believe he will, not while he's still ramping his way back up to his full workload following a second Tommy John surgery, but made sure to say that future All-Star games as a pitcher were a lock for Ohtani. "Shohei Ohtani is…I can't say enough, there's no words to describe it," Smoltz told the panel. "I said this three years ago, and people thought I'd lost my mind. It's a hypothetical, but if he never hits, and he pitches one year and all he does is pitch, he'd be the best pitcher in baseball. Without a doubt, I don't have any reservations, I don't have any what ifs." To back up Smoltz's assertion here, we have Ohtani's career where he's worked exclusively as a hitter. The 2024 season saw Ohtani, who did not pitch at all due to the aforementioned Tommy John procedure at the end of 2023, go on to hit an NL-leading 54 home runs – a career-high – while stealing 59 bases. Ohtani led the majors in total bases with 411, produced over nine wins above replacement exclusively as a hitter and led the NL in on-base percentage (.390), slugging (.646), OPS (.988) and OPS+ (174), too. Smoltz is simply applying the same reasoning in the other direction: Ohtani's skill is such that, given the opportunity to do just one thing instead of two, he becomes the greatest around at that one thing. "If all he did was pitch, which he'll never do, he'd be the best pitcher in baseball," Smoltz continued. "That just tells you what you need to know about his athleticism, how good of a feel he has, and he can not only hit, but he can pitch." As Smoltz said, it's unlikely that we'll ever get to find out if it's true. But given what we do know about Ohtani, it follows some clearly defined logic. Luckily, we get to watch him do both, and don't have to choose either way – he might be the best in the game if he did one thing, but there's nothing wrong with being one of the best at multiple things, either. While he was in Atlanta playing for the National League, someone broke into his Scottsdale house. The 31-year-old second baseman for the Arizona Diamondbacks said it was a difficult arrangement; they stole items valued at nearly $400,000. He also noted that he cannot do very much concerning it right now. He simply needs to ponder the future. The timing and scale of the defeat astonished the audience. What happened at Ketel Marte's home in Scottsdale during All-Star Game Ketel Marte was at Truist Park in Atlanta for the MLB All-Star Game on July 15, 2025; his home in Scottsdale, Arizona was robbed while he was gone. That night, police in Scottsdale verified a "high-dollar residential burglary" took place. Ketel Marte faced heckling earlier and joins list of robbed athletes This is not the first tough moment Ketel Marte faced this year. In June, during a game against the Cubs in Chicago, a heckler said rude things about his late mother. Ketel Marte was clearly hurt. And now, just a few weeks later, someone broke into his house. Sadly, this is becoming common for athletes. Last year, NFL stars like Joe Burrow, Patrick Mahomes, and Travis Kelce also had their homes robbed. Some groups use player schedules to find the right time to strike. Ketel Marte, however, is expected to return to the lineup on July 22 against the Astros. Rob Manfred makes big baseball fandom admission

As it turns out, Rob Manfred has been a Yankees fan all along. The MLB commissioner set the baseball world abuzz by sharing on Monday's 'Pardon My Take' show that he grew up a fan of the Bronx Bombers, and still watches them on a nightly basis. 'I watch a lot of baseball. I grew up a Yankee fan. I watch a lot of Yankee games, still,' Manfred said. 'I try to balance that off with equal time with the Mets because I live in New York, but most nights I'm flipping between Yankees or Mets, and the Extra Innings package to follow what's going on in the rest of the league.' Baseball fans immediately took to social media when they saw the news, with countless users cracking jokes about Manfred rigging the league for the Yankees. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell grew up a supporter of the then-Redskins in the Washington, D.C. area, but he said he gave up his fandom when he began working at the league office in the 1980s. NHL head man Gary Bettman and NBA commissioner Adam Silver grew up Rangers and Knicks fans, respectively, but neither have spoken about still following those teams in their current roles. 4 The American League All-Stars stand for the national anthem before the 2025 MLB All Star Game at Truist Park.
