Rangers vs. Mariners SGP predictions Aug. 3: Back Texas, deGrom in +350 ticket
The Texas Rangers and Seattle Mariners close out a crucial AL West series on Sunday afternoon. The pregame narrative: Texas and Seattle are both closely trailing the Houston Astros for first place in the division, making a win for either side crucial. A pitching edge makes the Rangers my pick to win a close, low-scoring contest. Check out my Rangers vs. Mariners predictions, featuring Jacob deGrom. Rangers vs. Mariners predictions Parlay: Rangers ML | deGrom over 7.5 strikeouts | Under 9.5 runs (+350) Rangers moneyline (-141): Backing Texas when deGrom is on the mound is usually a smart decision. ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW The Rangers are 13-8 when the dominant righty takes the mound this year, and he enters the action with an even more impressive 10-3 record. deGrom completely stymied the Mariners' lineup when he last faced the team on May 4. He pitched 5.0 innings of one-run ball in an 8-1 victory. Seattle counters with Logan Evans, who is really struggling ahead of this contest. In five starts since being recalled from Triple-A Tacoma, he sports a 5.63 ERA and a 5.47 FIP. Unsurprisingly, Seattle has lost three of his five outings during this stretch. MLB SGP legs deGrom over 7.5 strikeouts (+138): deGrom isn't having the best strikeout campaign of his career, but there's reason to be optimistic about this line. The Rangers' ace is averaging a strong 9.5 strikeouts per nine innings this year, but that number falls short of his career rate of 10.8 K/9. ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW Still, deGrom is reaching eight-plus strikeouts at an impressive clip ahead of this contest. He's usurped this total in each of his last three starts. The Mariners present a juicy matchup for deGrom on a pair of fronts. Firstly, they average the fourth-most strikeouts per game (8.89). Secondly, deGrom owns an impressive 24.7% strikeout percentage versus Seattle's current lineup, according to Baseball Savant. Under 9.5 runs (-335): Lastly, I'm not expecting either team to score a boatload of runs. The Rangers enter this game as favourites, and that usually means a lower-scoring affair. The under has cashed in 33 of Texas's 58 outings as a favourite this year (57.9%), the eighth-highest rate in the majors. The Rangers aren't a prolific offensive bunch by any stretch of the imagination. They rank an underwhelming 23rd in runs per game this season (4.12). Rays vs. Yankees SGP predicitons July 31: Bet on Giancarlo Stanton, Josh Lowe in Thursday's matinee
The Tampa Bay Rays and New York Yankees wrap up their four-game set with a matinee in the Bronx on Thursday. The pregame narrative: New York won in extra innings last night and aims to take three of four from its AL East rival today. This matchup is a pick'em with Marcus Stroman pitching for the Yanks and Ryan Pepiot going for the Rays. Check out my Rays vs. Yankees predictions, featuring Josh Lowe and Giancarlo Stanton. ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW Rays vs. Yankees predictions Parlay: Rays F5 +0.5 | Lowe over 0.5 hits | Stanton over 0.5 hits (+290) Rays F5 +0.5 (-165): Stroman is well past his prime, and he seldom gives the Yankees chances to win ballgames. The righty has a 6.09 ERA, a 1.59 WHIP and some unsightly batted ball metrics: Stroman also has a fourth-percentile K rate (14.9%) and has gotten lit up by this Rays lineup in the past, ceding a .309 batting average in 60 plate appearances. Pepiot, meanwhile, has been on a roll with a 3.60 ERA this month and four quality starts in five games. He has held this Aaron Judge-less Yankees lineup to a .186 batting average in 63 plate appearances. MLB SGP legs Lowe over 0.5 hits (-250): Stroman's biggest problems come against left-hitting batters. Lowe is also on a nice little run, batting .320 in his last seven games. He has a knock in six of those matchups, including all three games in this series. ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW Stanton over 0.5 hits (-139): I would recommend playing this as a standalone. Stanton has been on a roll coming out of the all-star break, batting .333/.389/.636 in nine games. He has a hit in eight of those contests, including all four at Yankee Stadium. The slugger is running reverse splits against righties this year, with a .289 batting average (.208 vs. LHPs). He hasn't seen Pepiot yet, but I'm not too worried about that. Mariners vs. Angels SGP predictions July 26: Back Rodriguez and Trout at +370
The Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Angels play on Saturday for the upper hand in a four-game series. The latest: The sides have looked evenly matched, splitting the first two games. Tonight, George Kirby starts for Seattle, going head-to-head with Tyler Anderson for Los Angeles. Check out my Mariners vs. Angels predictions, featuring Julio Rodriguez and Mike Trout. ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW Mariners vs. Angels predictions Parlay: Rodriguez over 1.5 bases | Kirby over 17.5 outs | Trout over 0.5 hits (+370) Rodrigeuz over 1.5 total bases (+100): Rodriguez is swinging a hot bat in L.A., mashing three home runs through the first two games of this series. And now, he gets another Grade-A matchup in Anderson. Rodriguez is 6-for-14 off the lefty, with only two Ks and no walks. The lack of strikeouts and free passes shows the outfielder's ability to get on Anderson's stuff. The left-handed starter is coming off three consecutive poor performances. He's given up 11 runs over his past 16 innings pitched while giving up three blasts. Since the all-star break, Rodriguez is batting .303 with 19 total bases over eight games. MLB SGP legs Kirby over 17.5 outs (-177): Even when Kirby has a mediocre performance, he's still regularly clearing this line. ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW The big righty has pitched 6.0 or more innings in four of his last five starts. That includes his last start when he allowed four earned runs. But overall, he's actually been very effective over those appearances. He has a 3.07 ERA and 2.38 FIP over those five starts. On top of that, the Angels have the third-worst team batting average (.234), while striking out the second most times per game (9.66). Los Angeles' offence has a .232 team average in 95 at-bats vs. Kirby all time. Trout over 0.5 hits (-250): Trout isn't having a spectacular season, but he's very consistent at getting hits. His .236 average ranks well below his career average of .296, but I can happily ignore that when he has a hit in 21 of his past 25 games. Trout is 4-for-9 (.444) off Kirby in his career with a home run. His xBA of .267 is over 30 points higher than his actual average and implies that Trout has left some production on the table.
