Red Sox Should Be Buyers at Trade Deadline Following Craig Breslow's Rafael Devers Comments
Red Sox Should Be Buyers at Trade Deadline Following Craig Breslow's Rafael Devers Comments originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Boston Red Sox are one of Major League Baseball's most interesting teams this season. After the massive trade of Rafael Devers, all eyes are on the Red Sox and Craig Breslow to see what moves they will pull off next. Advertisement With the trade deadline rapidly approaching, the Red Sox need to make a decision on what direction they should take. For Steve Buckley of The Athletic, the Red Sox's plan after trading Devers is clear. "Breslow has already made his for-the-future move by moving Rafael Devers and his contract to the San Francisco Giants." Buckley wrote. "And remember, Breslow had posited that the move might make the Red Sox a better team this season. If he truly believes that, he needs to make the moves that make him right." Breslow's comments after the Devers trade were met with plenty of scrutiny. His belief that the team would finish better than they would if he were on the roster was controversial, and yet, if he believes it, he hasn't shown it. The Red Sox, if they're looking to compete this year like Breslow claims, need to make a move at the MLB trade deadline. Whether it's a starting pitcher, a first baseman, or more bullpen help, the Red Sox need to make additions. Advertisement Boston Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow speaks with the media at the Hilton Anatole during the 2024 MLB Winter Miron-Imagn Images Boston has been at the center of trade rumors, but not in acquiring players, but trading them away. Jarren Duran and Aroldis Chapman are viewed as strong candidates to be traded, despite the Red Sox intending to compete. If Breslow is serious about making a postseason push, he needs to spend some of the money and use the flexibility from trading away Devers to improve the roster this season. The Red Sox can't sit still at the trade deadline. They either need to commit to a fire sale, which would draw the ire of the fan base, or buy into what Breslow believes and land some MLB-ready talents for a postseason run this year. Advertisement Trading away Devers revealed the plan for Boston, and after three of his offseason additions, Alex Bregman, Garrett Crochet, and Aroldis Chapman were named to the AL All-Star team, there's even more reason to put his money where his mouth is. Boston has a postseason caliber roster, but they need to make moves in the starting rotation and at first base. If Breslow is to be believed when he thinks the team is better off without Devers, the Red Sox need to address those needs by the MLB trade deadline. Red Sox Predicted to Land Dominant Left-Handed Power Hitter in MLB Draft
Red Sox Predicted to Land Dominant Left-Handed Power Hitter in MLB Draft originally appeared on Athlon Sports. In ESPN's latest mock draft, where MLB insiders make the picks, the Boston Red Sox are predicted to land Andrew Fischer 34th overall, a corner infielder from the University of Tennessee. Advertisement Kiley McDaniel of ESPN says Fischer combines advanced power and plate discipline, making him an ideal fit for Boston's youth movement. "Fischer is getting buzz all over the 20s and also likely won't last this long [34] on draft day," McDaniel said. In 271 at-bats with Tennessee this season, Fischer hit .341 with a monster .497 on-base percentage. He racked up 25 homers (good for third in NCAA DI), 65 RBIs, and 63 walks across 65 games played. Oh, and his OPS was a whopping 1.257. Boston Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow speaks with the media at the Hilton Anatole during the 2024 MLB Winter Miron-Imagn Images "Fischer's signature tool is his plus power that works to all fields, the product of a left-handed swing with bat speed and loft," prospect profile says. "He showed that he can launch balls in the air with wood bats last summer in the Cape Cod League." Advertisement His ability to dominate in arguably the best conference in college baseball (SEC) could put the 21-year-old higher on many draft boards than where the Red Sox are being projected to take him, 34th overall. After all, prospect rankings for the upcoming draft have Fischer ranked 29th. With Triston Casas injured, it remains to be seen where Fischer would land with a healthy lineup. The Tennessee product can play either corner infield spot and could even be a designated hitter if his hitting develops to that level. The addition of Fischer would bring a big-time power bat to Boston sooner than some may think.
