Shoppers stranded as MLCP closes

Chennai: Weekend shoppers in T Nagar were caught off guard as the multi-level car parking (MLCP) abruptly shut down on Saturday, forcing many to turn back. With barely any staff in sight and barricades blocking entry, customers were left scrambling for parking space during the busy Aadi shopping season. The 40crore facility, inaugurated in 2021 by the then chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, had been operated by a private firm whose contract ended recently. It was later handed over to another company on a temporary basis. "They ran it for a year, and now their term has also ended. So from Saturday, the shutters were down. As it's Aadi, there were many shoppers," said a Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) official. A lone security guard at the site placed red barricades at the entrance and was seen responding to confused and angry motorists. I had to park on Masilamani Road, but the traffic police locked my vehicle as it was a no-parking zone," said K Jagadeesan from Manapakkam. Senthamarai Kumaresan from Vadapalani, who came on her two-wheeler, was also turned away. "GCC should have at least issued a closure notice. During Aadi, footfall is high in T Nagar, yet the civic body has shut down the MLCP. Some temporary arrangements should be made immediately," she said. The MLCP can accommodate 222 cars and 513 two-wheelers, with three car lifts and one bike lift. While bikes are parked in the basement and terrace, cars are accommodated across six floors each floor holding 37 cars. However, two of the three car elevators have been dysfunctional for months and remain unrepaired. For the past eight months, the temporary operator had been offering free parking for the first three hours. "But with only one working elevator, queues were long, and car owners avoided the facility. As a result, most bylanes around Pondy Bazaar have turned into illegal parking zones," said V Manikandan of West Mambalam. GCC commissioner J Kumaragurubaran said a new contractor will be appointed soon. "We will be floating the RFP shortly," he said. Smart City plans monthly pass to ensure max use of Palayam MLCP

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In an effort to reduce waiting time, provide hassle-free parking, and offer cost-effective solutions for regular users, Smart City Thiruvananthapuram Ltd (SCTL) is set to introduce a monthly pass system for the multi-level car parking (MLCP) facility at Palayam. Currently, users are charged Rs 15 per hour for parking at the MLCP. The monthly pass initiative is being introduced to address low patronage at the Palayam MLCP and to cater to growing demand from local residents and business owners who require long-term parking. 'There are people in the locality who lack space to park their vehicles at their homes and resort to roadside parking. Concerns about vehicle safety have prompted many to approach us with requests for a more feasible long-term parking solution,' said an SCTL official. According to the official, monthly pass holders will be able to park for extended periods - even three to four days at a stretch - without paying the cumulative hourly fee. 'Users opting for the monthly pass can save up to 40% compared to the current hour-based charges. The proposal is under the Smart City Board's consideration and is likely to be taken up in the upcoming meeting,' the official added. SCTL has initiated a study to identify vacant slots at the Palayam MLCP that can be reserved for monthly pass users. Meanwhile, two more MLCPs - one at East Fort and another at the Medical College Hospital (MCH) - are nearing completion. According to sources, the MCH facility is expected to be completed within the next two weeks, with trial runs scheduled to begin soon. In addition, the Rs 20-crore MLCP at Putharikandam is expected to be ready by next month. 'We have also received a request from the Railways for dedicated parking lots at the Putharikandam MLCP for railway commuters. The proposal is currently under review,' the official said. Two new multi-level car parking facilities set to open in Thiruvananthapuram

Thiruvananthapuram: The state capital is poised to alleviate its chronic parking woes as two major multi-level car parking (MLCP) facilities will be officially opened soon, while groundwork for a third MLCP is underway. The MLCP at Govt Medical College Hospital (MCH) is slated to open this month. Constructed at a cost of Rs 16.58 crore under the Smart City Thiruvananthapuram Ltd (SCTL), the facility can accommodate approximately 202 cars. It aims to streamline parking for the bustling MCH campus, which also includes Regional Cancer Centre and SAT Hospital. Simultaneously, MLCP at Putharikandam Maidan is expected to be operational by mid-July. This Rs 20 crore project will offer parking for both four-wheelers and two-wheelers. The proposed MLCP at Vaniyamkulam, near Aryasala, has progressed to the land-clearing stage, with piling works set to commence soon. This facility is designed to accommodate trucks on the ground floor and will include commercial spaces, addressing the area's specific commercial needs. All three projects are being executed under the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) model, ensuring comprehensive design, supply, installation and maintenance of automated systems. "The completion of these MLCPs marks a significant step towards resolving the city's parking challenges," said corporation secretary Jahamgeer S. "We will enhance urban mobility and ensure that our infrastructure keeps pace with the city's growth," he added. A senior official from SCTL added, "These facilities are not just about parking; they are about reimagining urban spaces to be more efficient and user-friendly. The integration of automated systems will set a new standard for parking solutions in the city." Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Eid wishes , messages , and quotes !
