Taking steps to improve park safety after 2 Madison park shootings in 1 month

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — After two different shootings happened in the span of a month in one Madison park, city officials have taken steps to increase safety in the area. Cedar Hill Park, located in the 800 block of Old Hickory Boulevard in Madison, has seen two separate shooting incidents in a matter of weeks, with teens injured in both. At the beginning of the month, a man shot at a Metro Nashville Police Department vehicle and struck a teen girl in the leg. He now faces a federal firearm charge. Then on Memorial Day, two teens were reportedly caught in the crossfire of a second shooting. Both of these incidents had District 3 Councilwoman Jennifer Gamble contacting MNPD on how to make the park safer for residents and visitors. Neighborhood News: Stories impacting your community | Read More 'Park security — particularly in our greenways and greenspaces in Metro Parks — is very important,' Gamble told News 2. 'And I have had discussions with MNPD and Metro Parks about improving safety, particularly at Cedar Hill Park.' After the shooting at the beginning of the month, Gamble said she reached out to MNPD about increasing patrols in the park and in park shelters, particularly due to reports of drug and other illegal activity happening in the parks. Both the MNPD and Metro Parks agreed to increase patrols in the area prior to the Memorial Day shooting. Additionally, Metro Parks installed a new security gate at the entrance to Cedar Hill Park in March. 'That gate is locked after hours when the park is closed,' Gamble said, noting it was designed to decrease vehicle-related criminal activity in the park after park hours. 📧 Have breaking news come to you: → All Metro Parks operate on a dusk-to-dawn schedule, meaning no visitors are supposed to be in the parks after the sun sets each day. Further, Gamble told News 2 there are currently plans in the works to install new cameras in the park. 'Currently, there is a police safety cam situated at the entrance of the park to help prevent or deter crime from happening and also to record it if it does happen so that we can act quickly to address the crime and bring individuals to justice,' Gamble said. Other Cedar Hill Park concerns citizens have brought to Gamble include the integrity of the pavement throughout the park's walking trails and roadways and traffic safety issues. Gamble said speed humps have been installed at the park in recent months to help cut down on speeding inside the park boundaries. Do you have news happening in your neighborhood? Garcia-Arevalo allegedly drove the car on flattened tires for another five minutes before he and the other two teens got out on Amalie Drive and ran into a neighborhood. After detectives flooded the area, they took all three minors into custody. ⏩ Dickson police are set to handle any charges related to the gun store burglary and theft. Mother pushes for LPRs in Nashville after son injured in hit-and-run crash

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — The mother of the man who was seriously injured in a hit-and-run Sunday evening is calling out Nashville for not have license plate recognition cameras. Zach Carach and his family were reportedly visiting Nashville over the weekend to celebrate his 21st birthday. However, everything changed around 6 p.m. on Sunday, May 18. In the surveillance video, you can see Zach looking both ways before crossing the walkway on Church Street. Moments later, the footage shows a silver Mitsubishi Mirage hitting Zach, throwing him airborne, and then driving off. 'It's just a miracle that he's alive,' Zach's mom, Sheena Carach, said. As of Wednesday, May 21, he is reportedly still recovering at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. 'I had to call cops around this nation to say, 'Please help me put pressure on this department to do something; please help me get this done,'' Sheena said. Sheena has been fighting for answers in her son's case and questioning why Nashville doesn't have LPR cameras. 'Why does Nashville, as big as they are, not have this but everybody else does? I just, I can't stress it enough, and I'm not done fighting. I'm going to fight for my child until this is finished, but then I'm going to fight for those other people, for other people's children…and I'm going to fight for justice for every single person that's been harmed here in this city,' Sheena said. Juliet rental facility. However, investigators are still working to track down the driver. 'It's heartbreaking to see the vehicle in the video. You can tell there is damage, but you can't see the severity of the damage. Then you look at it as a mom and you say, 'Oh my God, that was my child's body that made that,'' Sheena said. Sheena is grateful for the Nashville community's response to her search for justice for Zach. 'I said the other day it takes a village and I'm just so proud, honored, and humbled that Nashville has been my village,' Sheena said. ⏩ If you know anything about Sunday's hit-and-run, you're asked to call Nashville Crime Stoppers at 615-742-7463. Callers can remain anonymous and qualify for a cash reward. If you want to help with Zach's medical costs, Sheena has set up a GoFundMe. So far, it's raised more than $1,300. ‘In a split second, it all changed': 21-year-old injured after hit-and-run on busy Nashville road

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A mother is pleading for your help after her 21-year-old son was hit by a car and left in the street on a busy Nashville road. Zach Carach is okay but faces a long recovery. Over the weekend, Zach Carach and his family were visiting from out of town, celebrating Zach's 21st birthday. 'And in a split second, it all changed,' said Sheena Carach, Zach's mom. 📧 Have breaking news come to you: → Everything changed on Sunday around 6 p.m. In the surveillance video, you can see Zach on Church Street, he looks both ways before crossing the walkway. Moments later, a silver Mitsubishi Mirage hits Zach, throwing him airborne, and then drives off. Zach's mom runs across the street. 'I just prayed. I don't think I've ever prayed like that. I just begged God that if he needed somebody, take me and take his place,' Sheena said. Doctors told Sheena it's a miracle her son is alive. Now, she is determined to find the driver of the vehicle. 'And to that person that is out there and watching this, please do the right thing, turn yourself in and come forward. If you're a parent, I'm begging you, do the right thing,' Sheena said. She said more could be done to catch the driver, such as license plate readers. 'There is no reason that they should not have cameras at intersections. Especially when I'm finding out that this is a common occurrence.' Sheena said she hopes MNPD will make this case a priority. Since 2016, her family has been personally thanking police officers for their service across the country through their non–profit, Donut Boy. 'We are the poster child of police support, and this is a moment that I need them, I need them, because I've always had their back.' ⏩ She said she won't stop until someone comes forward. 'Please share this. Please help me find who hurt my child because if it were your child, you would want someone to have your back, and they say it takes a village, so I'm pleading with all of Nashville to be that village for me.' If you know anything about this crime or if you've seen the vehicle with front-end damage, you are asked to call Nashville Crime Stoppers at 615-742-7463.
