Trump, local leaders speak on US strike on Iranian nuclear sites
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — After it was announced that the Department of Defense moved B-2 bombers from Whiteman Air Force Base across the Pacific Ocean for potential strikes against Iran, President Donald Trump says three Iranian nuclear sites have been struck.
US bombs three Iran nuclear sites, entering war
We have completed our very successful attack on the three Nuclear sites in Iran, including Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan,' said President Trump in a release Saturday.
'All planes are now outside of Iran air space. A full payload of BOMBS was dropped on the primary site, Fordow. All planes are safely on their way home. Congratulations to our great American Warriors. There is not another military in the World that could have done this. NOW IS THE TIME FOR PEACE! Thank you for your attention to this matter.'
The three sites that President Trump said were struck on Saturday, June 21, are in Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan. The strikes were carried out using B-2 bombers, submarines and 'bunker-buster' bombs, according to reports.
During a press conference Saturday evening, President Trump called the strikes a complete success and called for Iran to stand down against Israel.
'Tonight I can report to the world that the strikes were a spectacular military success,' he said.
The strikes are connected to the Kansas City area in a major way, with the B-2 bombers used in the attacks coming from Whiteman Air Force Base in Knob Noster, Missouri, which is around an hour and a half away from Kansas City, Missouri.
Additionally, local leaders have begun sharing statements on the strikes Saturday evening. Representative Mark Alford wrote the following :
'As the Congressman for Whiteman AFB, I've been saying for weeks that our airmen in the 509th bomber wing are ready, capable, and lethal. Tonight, they showed the world what they can do to protect American interests and keep our citizens safe. MO-04 strong!'
On the other side of the state line, Kansas Senator Roger Marshall shared a statement on X as well.
'Thank you to our brave American Air Force and their successful mission as no Americans were harmed,' he wrote.
'We stand tall with President Trump who is protecting the world from a nuclear capable Iran.'
Kansas Representative Sharice Davids, on the other hand, said that while national security will always be top priority, Trump's decision to launch strikes could pose a number of threats.
'Protecting U.S. safety and security is my top priority, and I will be closely reviewing the intelligence on whether these actions effectively addressed the threat of Iran's nuclear program. My respect is with all service members stationed around the world.
'But let me be clear, President Trump's unilateral decision to launch military action against Iran without constitutionally-mandated congressional approval puts American troops and global stability at risk and threatens another endless war.'
Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey echoed Alford's statement on Whiteman AFB.
'Tonight America's STRENGTH comes from Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri. Proud home of the B2 bomber,' he said.
The following day, Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas called on Congress to avoid another war in the Middle East.
'Having spent time recently with Missouri-based Air Force bomber pilots and crews, I am heartened all are safe. I pray now for the safety of all of our servicemen and women in the Middle East and around the world, which should involve Congressional review and authorization before we enter into another extended conflict in the Middle East,' he said.
'A recent generation of my family members and those of many other Americans dedicated service to regime-change wars in the Middle East that ended in instability, a lasting terrorist threat, lost lives, and changed lives for thousands of US troops. I beg Congress to use its authority to review and avoid those harms to another generation of servicemen, women, and American families like yours and mine.'
Congressman Emmaunuel Cleaver shared a similar statement, accusing the Presidents actions as 'unconstitutional.'
'President Trump's bombing of 3 sites in Iran was unconstitutional; only Congress can declare war,' he shared in a statement on X.
Cleaver said that it's not a one-sided issue, either.
'Recently both Democratic and Republican presidencies have felt comfortable overstepping their article 2 constitutional authorities. This is a power grab,' he said.
