Steve Kornacki's Longtime Role at MSNBC Comes to an End — Where Is He Heading Next?
Steve Kornacki's role at NBC is changing. The data journalist, 44, has signed a deal at NBCUniversal that will see him leave his position at MSNBC, PEOPLE confirms. The new contract will instead expand his role across NBC News' broadcasts. Kornacki will continue to provide statistical analysis for polls and election results, as well as major sporting events. He will also appear on NBC News Now, Meet the Press, Today and NBC Nightly News. PEOPLE has reached out to MSNBC for comment. Kornacki joined MSNBC in 2012 and went on to host several shows, including the 4 p.m. hour of MSNBC Live, the Monday edition of MTP Daily and Up with Steve Kornacki on Saturday and Sunday mornings. He was also a co-host on MSNBC's ensemble show The Cycle. In February, MSNBC announced its decision to part ways with political commentator and The ReidOut host, Joy Reid, in a memo sent to staff. At the time, Reid addressed the speculation surrounding her exit in a statement shared on BlueSky and Instagram. 'I just want to say thank you to everyone who has reached out with kindness and encouragement, both personally and in these social media streets,' Reid wrote. 'So very proud of The Reidout @ team, who are truly family, and all of our supporters & friends. See you tomorrow night at 7, one more time.' In the face of some high-profile departures, MSNBC also signed on a slate of new talent to join its programming, including NBC News' Antonia Hylton, Politico's Eugene Daniels and The Washington Post's Catherine Rampell and Jackie Alamany. MSNBC's Post-NBC News Plans May Include New Products
MSNBC president Rebecca Kutler and her senior executives are in the midst of preparing for the network to be spun off from the NBCUniversal News Group and join the newly-created SpinCo later this year. The network is in the process of looking for new office and studio space. It also recently hired Scott Matthews to oversee its newsgathering operation with plans to hire more than 100 journalists. According to a new story published in New York magazine, Kutler also intends to launch new products, including a streaming service in addition to MSNBC's linear channel. Other opportunities that may be explored include an expansion of its live event business-as well as digital and audio offerings-and working with brands that have built-in audiences. TVNewser reached out to MSNBC for comment on these plans, but received no response at press time. MSNBC has seen success from its live events business. Launched in 2023, MSNBC Live events frequently feature opportunities for the network's anchors and hosts to interact directly with their fanbase. This past January, MSNBC Live co-hosted the fourth and final Democratic National Committee leadership forum in Washington, D.C. And last September, it held two Democracy 2024 sessions at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York.
