Relief ops underway in flood-stricken areas in Maguindanao
The Bangsamoro government has reported that emergency response operations have been beefed up in areas affected by the recent massive flooding in Maguindanao del Norte and Maguindanao del Sur. According to the Bangsamoro government, up to 138 barangays in 14 towns were affected by the flooding following continuous rains triggered by the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). The Ministry of Interior and Local Government (MILG) also reported that hundreds of residents were displaced and more than 2,033 hectares of crops and livestock were destroyed-subject to verification by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Agrarian Reform (MAFAR). The Bangsamoro government said two wooden bridges in Barangay Bagumbong, Mamasapano were reported damaged and some schools in Datu Piang experienced flooding. Datu Piang has been placed under a state of calamity on May 21, 2025. Response teams were deployed to the areas affected to carry out rescue and relief operations. Bangsamoro Chief Minister Abdulraof Macacua assured the public that his office is coordinating closely with key agencies to deliver critical aid and safeguard the communities affected. 'In Sha Allah, through our collective efforts, we will overcome this safely, ' Macacua was quoted as saying. As part of response efforts, relief distribution continues in flood-affected areas. Up to 1,000 food packs and hygiene kits were distributed in Mamasapano on May 20, and 500 food packs each in Ampatuan and Guindulungan towns on May 21. The Ministry of Social Services and Development (MSSD) also delivered 238 food packs, hygiene kits, and sleeping kits in Ampatuan; 1,045 sets of same aid in 20 barangays in Datu Piang; and served 1,000 hot meals and distributed 500 food packs, 500 hygiene kits, and 335 sleeping kits in Datu Anggal Midtimbang. MSSD also provided assistance to evacuees in temporary shelters. Macacua called on key agencies to maintain close monitoring of the affected areas and issue timely advisories until weather conditions return to normal.

‘1Student, 1Sport' policy right move: Jeffrey

He said they need such momentum to ensure their children are not just intellectually but also physically active, whether at school or at home. Advertisement 'This also aims to ensure access to quality education for every student and is able to have a double impact in the field of learning. This can indirectly boost students' achievements,' he said when officiating the 57th District School Sports Council (MSSD) Athletics Championship at the Sports Complex, here, Wednesday. The text of his speech was read by his representative, Minister of Youth and Sports, Datuk Alfred Ellron Angin. According to him, a healthy body and alert brain can be linked to physical activities held at school. This element is highly emphasised by the school to produce individuals who are balanced in terms of physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual. Jeffrey, who is also Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry, said the field of sports is one of the best platforms to produce students who are physically and mentally fit and through consistent and balanced training from various aspects that cover the mind, body, muscles, nerves and emotions. In fact, he said, sports help keep students physically and mentally healthy as well as inculcate leadership qualities. 'The 1Student, 1Sport policy is the right step to achieve this goal. The policy that requires every healthy student to participate in at least one sports activity at school is not only able to restore the excitement of sports in schools and strengthen the relationship between school members and the local community, but it will also be a catalyst towards greater success. 'This tournament is also not simply about determining the champion of an event but, more importantly, it also provides indirect education to students and athletes that success can only be achieved through effort, perseverance, careful planning and sacrifice,' said the Tambunan Assemblyman. According to him, the tournament is also a platform to foster unity. The ultimate goal is to form a society who are strong-willed, patriotic and compassionate. He said such activities will also prevent students from getting involved in unhealthy activities. 'We must realise that through sports, we are able to develop quality human capital and people who have first-class mindset and will become future leaders of the country. 'Sports are also able to foster unity among the diverse communities in Malaysia. Unity is the key to Malaysia's success in becoming internationally-recognised. 'The people must not forget the importance of unity to build a successful and harmonious nation. The best indicator towards that is through sports,' he said. At this athletics championship, which involved participation of students from various races and religions, they could be seen cheering and applauding the athletes regardless of their backgrounds. Indirectly, he said, it is a form of unification of well-being and upholding the principles of mutual respect and cooperation in teams regardless of race or age. He said the Tambunan MSSD Sports Championship, which is held annually, is aimed at building the sportsmanship among the young people.
