'A pretty amazing opportunity': G7 delegates to get gift bags full of Alberta products

When Adam Walker co-founded MTNPK Glassware with his wife, Kim, in 2020, he never dreamed that one day, their products would be in the possession of the world's most prominent political leaders. Article content But that's now a realistic possibility, after one of the Edmonton-based company's signature glasses was selected to be included in a goody bag gifted to delegates at the G7 Leaders' Summit, which runs in Kananaskis Country from Sunday to Tuesday. Article content 'Not in a million years,' Walker said with a laugh, when asked if he ever thought U.S. President Donald Trump or French President Emmanuel Macron would one day drink from a MTNPK tumbler. Article content Article content Next week's G7 summit will bring some of the world's most powerful politicians to the Calgary area for three days of geopolitical discussion, including heads of government from Canada, the U.S., U.K., France, Germany, Japan, Italy and the European Union. Article content Prime Minister Mark Carney has also invited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as well as leaders from Mexico, Australia, Brazil, India, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, South Korea and South Africa. Article content The G7 goody bags, an initiative led by the City of Calgary, will be gifted to dignitaries and their entourages. Article content The gift bags are in lieu of the city's traditional white hat ceremony, when prominent visitors receive a white Smithbilt cowboy hat upon arriving at the YYC International Airport. That ceremonial tradition was scrapped for this summit over heightened security protocol, though delegates will still receive the iconic hats in their tote bag. Article content Article content While the city hasn't confirmed how many of the tote bags will be handed out, the G7 is expected to welcome approximately 2,000 international delegates. Article content Article content Walker said the opportunity to have the Three Sisters lowball glass — which depicts the iconic trio of mountain peaks just outside Canmore at the bottom of the glass — included in the G7 goody bag came after the city reached out to the company. Article content 'For me, that was like, holy crap,' he said, adding the city ultimately ordered 45 units. 'It's an amazing opportunity and we were (happy) to be able to help fill their needs.'

Article content 'For me, that was like, holy crap,' he said, adding the city ultimately ordered 45 units. 'It's an amazing opportunity and we were (happy) to be able to help fill their needs.' Article content MTNPK Glassware donates part of the proceeds from every Three Sisters glass it sells to the Rocky Mountain Adaptive program, Walker added. To date, the company has been able to donate over $64,000 to the organization. Article content 'Hopefully, this brings more awareness to our products so that we can raise even more funds for the program,' he said. Article content Scott Sanger, Rosso's head of marketing, said it's 'super exciting' to know the Calgary-based roaster's Homebody coffee beans will be in the possession of some prominent world leaders next week. He added the inclusion of coffee beans in the tote bag is a testament to the fact coffee is a global ritual. Article content 'It's a part of our daily lives, no matter where you're coming from and no matter what your title may be,' he said. Article content Article content 'To know we'll be involved in those daily moments of some pretty impressive and senior people is a great accomplishment.' Article content The tote bags themselves are illustrated with artwork from Crystal Lee Clark, a Nehiway/Dene/Métis artist and educator. Clark's piece on the tote bag depicts a soaring black-capped chickadee, which is recognized as Calgary's official bird. Article content In an email, she said that as an Indigenous artist, she approached the opportunity to have her artwork displayed on the tote bags with 'thoughtful consideration,' considering some of the political leaders in attendance represent governments that have not upheld Indigenous rights. Article content 'That said, I see this as a chance for the presence of Indigenous stories, voices, worldview and resilience to quietly accompany these conversations through the story of the art,' Clark wrote. 'The black-capped chickadee is a symbol of survival, song, beauty and strength — qualities that resonate deeply with Indigenous Peoples and our histories and relationships.
