Seniors rise to huge challenge at one ACPSD high school
GRANITEVILLE, S.C. (WJBF)- The 2024-2025 school year is almost over and seniors across the CSRA are preparing to take their next steps. One local high school issued a huge challenge to its seniors at the beginning of the school year, and they've nearly completed it. For years the administration at Midland Valley High School has challenged the top 20 seniors to apply to at least 20 different colleges. This year they switched it up with a much bigger challenge– apply to and be accepted to schools in all 50 states. 'It was just a matter of us knowing how great our students were. And we just wanted everybody else to know about this, too. And it's born in competition. We want to do better than everybody else and be better than every high school, because our students are as good as any and better than most,' explained Sheldon Higgenbottom, MVHS Principal. The goal is to encourage seniors to apply to schools outside of South Carolina and broaden their horizons. It's an exercise that has motivated these seniors. Hometown History: The Boyhood Homes of a President and Supreme Court Justice 'I just thought it was pretty cool. When I think about applying to college, I just think of in-state or maybe a couple of states away. But the whole United States is pretty cool. I want to get in on it. I would say thinking about the opportunities that are that are outside of state, you know, I know the state pretty well. I don't want to say I know everything, but pretty familiar with it. So seeing what's out there is kind of exciting and new,' said Lawrence Valdez, a MVHS Senior. This years crop of seniors at MVHS are exceptional. Valdez, along with his twin brother, Logan, are in the top three students in their class. Jonathan Dixon is graduating a year early, and now holds the record for the highest SAT score in the history of MVHS- a 1540 out of 1600. Bella Cowart has gotten into several out of state schools including Baylor University. and Robert Morris University in Pennsylvania. One senior has applied to and been accepted to schools in 18 states. She says the challenge and other tools available to seniors helped a lot in the application and decision process. Helene damage could affect your tax returns this year 'The using the common app, which we use here. It showed me different schools in different states. And like I was able to go and research them and see if that school possibly interests me so that I could apply through these different states to get mine, you know, opportunities brought in to see if I might want to go out of state,' explained Lylah Davis, a MVHS Senior. So far Midland Valley seniors have been accepted to colleges in 48 states. They are still waiting to hear from colleges in Idaho and Maryland. Higgenbottom plans to announce the final results as well as the class's scholarship total for the year at graduation in May. He hopes to beat last year's total scholarship amount of more than $20 million. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. MVHS President announces retirement
UTICA, NY (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) — The president of the Mohawk Valley Health System — who helped oversee the opening of the Wynn Hospital in 2023 — has announced that she will be retiring at the end of the year. Darlene Stromstad announced on Monday, March 24 that she will be retiring from her position in late 2025. Stromstad oversaw the combination of St. Elizabeth's Hospital and St. Luke's Hospital into the Wynn Hospital in 2023. 'After an incredible journey in healthcare leadership, I will be retiring from my role as President/CEO of MVHS at the end of the year,' Stromstad said in a statement. 'This decision comes with mixed emotions, as my time at MVHS – and throughout my career – has been filled with meaningful work, incredible colleagues and a shared commitment to providing the best possible care to our communities. When I joined MVHS, I was drawn to the opportunity to help transform healthcare in central New York. Together, we accomplished something truly extraordinary with the opening of Wynn Hospital – a state-of-the-art facility that will serve this region for generations to come. We strengthened our system, expanded services and navigated challenges with resilience, all with the goal of improving the lives of those who rely on us for care.' Before taking the position in Utica, Stromstad worked in hospitals all over the Northeast, including Fenway Health in Boston. She also led health systems in New Hampshire, Connecticut and Maine. Stromstad has been the president and CEO of MVHS since 2019. During that time, she oversaw the implementation of an Electronic Health Record system throughout all of MVHS, as well as her overseeing of local health during the COVID-19 pandemic. A search committee has been organized by the MVHS board of directors to perform a national search for Stromstad's replacement. Former board chair Greg Evans has been named as the head of the search committee. 'Throughout my career – whether in New Hampshire, Boston, Connecticut, Maine or here in Utica – I have been privileged to work alongside some of the most dedicated and talented professionals in healthcare. I have also had the honor of serving on national and state-level boards, advocating for policies that support patients, healthcare workers and the industry as a whole,' Stromstad said in a statement. 'As I step into this next chapter, I do so with deep appreciation for the experiences I have had, the relationships I have built and the impact we have made together,' said Stromstad. 'I thank the MVHS Board of Directors for this remarkable opportunity and their continued support. While I may be retiring from my day-to-day leadership role, my passion for healthcare and my gratitude for this community will remain steadfast.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Popular Youngstown cookie table fundraiser returns
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — A delicious Youngstown tradition is back for another year this weekend. The Cookie Table and Cocktails event returns Saturday. The fundraiser is hosted each year by the Mahoning Valley Historical Society. It pays tribute to the impact the cookie table has in Youngstown — a key ingredient to a successful wedding recipe born because families back in the day couldn't afford a wedding cake. Friday, judges sampled cookies from close to 90 bakers. 'This is probably one of the more sought-after volunteer opportunities that we have all through town, just judging at the event,' said MVHS Director Bill Lawson. 'It's a lot of fun. Sometimes it's difficult to make a decision because there's so many, so many good cookies that come in for our event every year.' The actual event is Saturday evening at St. Mary's Assumption Social Center in Youngstown at 6 p.m. Ticket information is available online. Tino DiCenso contributed to this report.
