ICG reports major milestone in dousing fire on Singapore-flagged cargo ship

The Indian Coast Guard on Friday said it has achieved a "major milestone" in the ongoing operation to suppress fire onboard a Singapore-flagged cargo vessel that occurred following a container explosion on June 9, as its towing commenced to keep away the ship away from the coast. The incident had occurred at approximately 9.20 am IST, around 44 nautical miles off Azhikkal in Kannur district of Kerala and 130 nautical miles northwest of Kochi. "Major milestone in the ongoing operation to suppress the fire onboard MV WAN HAI 503 and protect marine environment! @IndiaCoastGuard ships undertaking FF Op enabled tow connect up of Salvage vessel in extremely challenging and daunting operation. @indiannavy Sea King helicopter was tasked by #HQSNC to winch down salvors who shifted the tow from #ICG ships to Salvage Tugs," the ICG posted on X. It also shared some photos of the ongoing operation. "The tow has now commenced and the vessel is being pulled to keep away from our coast! ICG fire fighting Op continues," it said. Of the 22 crew members of the Singapore-flagged vessel, 18 were rescued by the Navy, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and other agencies on Monday. The crew members include eight Chinese, six Taiwanese, five Myanmarese, and three Indonesian nationals, the ICG had said in a statement on June 9. The fire on board the Singapore-flagged container vessel has been largely contained, though it is still not fully under control, defence sources had said on Wednesday.

Loss of fish due to shipwrecks is economic loss: Kerala HC

Kochi: High court has observed that the loss of commercially harvested fish due to marine pollution caused by the recent shipwrecks in the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) qualifies as an economic loss. The observation was made while considering a petition by former MP T N Prathapan, who sought a comprehensive compensation package for fishermen and other stakeholders affected by the ship accidents off the Kerala coast. The court emphasised that the EEZ — extending up to 200 nautical miles from the baseline — falls under the sovereign rights of the Union for exploration, exploitation, conservation and management of both living and non-living natural resources. The Union also holds exclusive jurisdiction to protect the marine environment and prevent marine pollution within this zone. Therefore, losses sustained in the EEZ must be considered for compensation, the court noted. The court is examining two recent maritime incidents: the sinking of MSC ELSA-3, a Liberian-flagged cargo vessel, on May 25 off the Kerala coast, and the fire aboard cargo ship WAN HAI 503, off the Kannur coast on June 9. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Memperdagangkan CFD Emas dengan salah satu spread terendah? According to the owners, MV WAN HAI 503 was carrying 1,754 containers, many of which contained flammable liquids, solids, corrosive chemicals, pesticides and other environmentally hazardous substances such as printing ink and thinning agents. HC noted that such materials pose a serious threat to marine ecology. Citing various statutory provisions, including the Admiralty (Jurisdiction and Settlement of Maritime Claims) Act, 2017, the court noted that the govt is empowered to initiate both civil and criminal proceedings against the vessel and its owners to recover damages. The court also appointed Adv Arjun Sreedhar as amicus curiae in the case. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . Indian Coast Guard continues firefighting ops on MV WAN HAI 503 despite adverse sea conditions

Kochi (Kerala) [India], June 12 (ANI): The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) on Thursday continued its relentless firefighting efforts aboard MV WAN HAI 503, despite challenging sea conditions. A specialised team comprising one pilot and two aircrew divers was deployed onboard an Indian Air Force MI-17 helicopter to carry out aerial firefighting operations. During the mission, the team successfully dispersed 1,000 kg of Dry Chemical Powder (DCP) directly onto the fire's core. To mitigate environmental risks near the coast, the ICG is maintaining the vessel's position using a towline while closely monitoring the situation. Although the external fire has been extinguished, dense smoke continues to emanate, indicating residual internal heat and possible metallic fire. Firefighting efforts remain ongoing, with all responding assets on high alert to ensure complete containment of the fire. Earlier on Tuesday, the ICG winched five salvage team members and an aircrew diver onto the burning Singaporean container vessel MV Wan Hai 503 to facilitate towing operations. According to an official release from the Ministry of Defence, the vessel, which caught fire off the Kerala coast on June 9, continues to drift south-east within India's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), approximately 42 nautical miles from Beypore, Kerala. The vessel is carrying 1.2 lakh metric tons of fuel and hundreds of containers, including hazardous cargo, posing a serious risk to the marine environment and regional shipping routes. 'Intensive firefighting efforts by ICG have significantly reduced visible flames, with only smoke now seen across the cargo holds and bays. However, the fire remains active in the inner decks and near fuel tanks,' the release stated. 'Five ICG ships, two Dornier aircraft, and a helicopter are engaged in the ongoing firefighting mission, supported by two vessels from the Directorate General of Shipping. A salvage team appointed by the ship's owners is working in coordination with ICG, and the Indian Air Force has been requested for additional aerial support,' it added. With the fire yet to be fully extinguished, efforts to establish a towline and pull the vessel away from the coast are underway to prevent a potential ecological disaster. The situation remains critical and is being monitored continuously. (ANI)
