‘Samajh nahi aaya': Renuka Shahane reveals doctor's shocking weight comment day after childbirth; how it can affect a new mom
Hum Aapke Hain Koun actor Renuka Shahane recently opened up about a deeply personal experience that sheds light on a harsh and often unspoken reality many new mothers face — body image pressure right after childbirth. In a candid conversation with Gauahar Khan on her podcast show MaaNoranjan, Shahane reflected on the emotional and physical toll of becoming a new mother, and the jarring comment she received just a day after giving birth to her son in 2002. 'My first child was born in 2002. Despite all my hopes, it wasn't easy. Many things go unspoken,' she said. Shahane added, 'When the doctor and his wife visited me in the hospital, his very first words were, 'Now you must lose weight.' It felt so strange,' Shahane revealed. She then recalled her reaction to the doctor's comment: 'Just yesterday I delivered my firstborn and I was like yeh kaunsa pressure hai, samajh nahi aaya (what is this pressure, I don't understand). That was a first for me and I was completely shocked. So many things were happening to me, so I was just like a spectator, and it's his prerogative only. It actually prepares you for societal pressure. A mother doesn't only have the pressure to be a naturally fabulous mother, but also to bounce back as if nothing has happened.' Dr Shaily Sharma, consultant gynaecologist at Cloudnine Hospital, Faridabad, tells 'It can be weird…receiving weight-related comments right after childbirth. It can be extremely harmful for a new mother, both emotionally and physically. After delivery, a woman's body is healing from a major physical event. Her hormones are shifting, sleep is disturbed, and she may already feel overwhelmed or vulnerable. Being told to focus on weight loss during this delicate time can lead to guilt, shame, or anxiety. It may affect her self-esteem, discourage breastfeeding, or even contribute to postpartum depression. Mothers need empathy and support, not pressure or judgement.' Dr Sharma notes that recovery after childbirth should be gentle and paced according to each mother's needs. Emotionally, seeking support from family, friends, or a counsellor can be beneficial. Practicing self-kindness, accepting one's body, and connecting with other new mothers can ease the emotional load. 'Physically, focus should be on rest, balanced nutrition, hydration, and gradual movement like light walking or postnatal yoga. Any weight changes should come naturally over time, not through rushed diets or intense workouts. Healing, bonding with the baby, and mental wellness should be the true priorities in this phase,' suggests the doctor. Renuka Shahane Says Ashutosh Rana Proposed Only After Guru's Advice: ‘He Didn't Know...'
Last Updated: Renuka Shahane shares Ashutosh Rana proposed only after his spiritual guru picked her as his future wife, shocking her mother. 'Guruji ne bataaya isliye?' Renuka Shahane and Ashutosh Rana have long been admired as one of Bollywood's most grounded and graceful couples — but their journey to marriage wasn't as conventional as one might imagine. The duo, who dated for three years before tying the knot in 2001, recently opened up about the spiritual twist that brought them together for life. In a heartfelt conversation on the second episode of Gauahar Khan's YouTube podcast MaaNoranjan, Renuka reflected on their courtship and eventual marriage, revealing that Rana only asked for her hand in marriage after his spiritual guru advised him to — without even realizing she was the woman his guru had chosen. 'At the time, both of us were very much in love," Renuka shared. 'But we were also extremely happy in our own independent lives. Getting married at the peak of our careers, with so much public attention, felt like a huge step. Marriage is a scary proposition. You want everything to go right — not just in the relationship, but even after the wedding." The Circus actor went on to explain that it was a surprising spiritual nudge that prompted Ashutosh to propose. 'While we were dating, his guruji told him, 'I've found the perfect bahu for you,'" she recalled. 'Rana ji got scared — he thought, 'Who is this girl?' He had no idea Guruji was talking about me! When Guruji said, 'She is a good girl, you should ask for her hand,' only then did he approach my family." Renuka added with a laugh, 'My mom was stunned. She asked him, 'Are you marrying her because your guru told you to — or because you actually want to marry her?'" As for her own decision to say yes, Renuka explained it came from a place of clarity and love. 'I always wanted children," she said. 'I had a very clear picture in my mind about giving them a stable family. And Rana ji is such a deeply family-oriented person. When you think of having kids, you want their father to be someone like that." Today, the couple are proud parents to two sons, Shauryaman and Satyendra, and continue to lead by example when it comes to love, respect, and shared values in marriage. On the professional front, Ashutosh Rana was last seen in Loveyapa, opposite Junaid Khan and Khushi Kapoor, while Renuka Shahane most recently starred in the Marathi film Devmanus.
