Hallmark star arrested after bar fight in Florida, cops say. ‘Unfortunate incident'
A night out on the town in Northeast Florida didn't end well for Eric Mabius. The former 'Ugly Betty' star, 53, was arrested after an alleged fight at a bar called The Goat in Yulee, in the wee hours of Thursday. As per a police report from the Nassau County Sheriff's Office, cops responded to the establishment that specializes in draft beers and well drink specials after calls came in about a fight. Officers immediately saw Mabius and a female suspect who appeared 'extremely intoxicated' and 'yelling at everyone.' A female victim told police that Mabius and his companion were causing a major disturbance, and that after a bartender asked the woman to leave, she began to spit on people, says the complaint. Things escalated, and at one point, the victim alleges the woman pushed her and that's when Mabius knocked them both to the ground. While on the floor, she said the Pennsylvania native began 'ripping a handful of hair from her scalp.' A male patron who stepped in to stop the brawl corroborated the story. While Mabius was outside, the actor became 'more belligerent,' refusing simple commands to sit on a bench, the report says. Both the Hallmark Channel star and his companion, 40, were placed under arrest and charged with simple battery and resisting without violence. In Mabius' mugshot, the divorced father of two — whose address is listed in Fernandina Beach, about 10 miles from Yulee — appears to have an injured eye. 'This type of behavior will not be tolerated in our community, regardless of celebrity status,' Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper said. 'Our deputies quickly dealt with an uncooperative individual, and we're thankful no one was seriously injured during this unfortunate incident.'

The situation escalated when Mabius allegedly climbed on top of one of the women, pulling a handful of her hair. Multiple bystanders intervened, pulling both Mabius and the intoxicated woman off the victim. A witness also reported being spat on by the intoxicated woman, adding to the chaos. The woman Mabius allegedly assaulted expressed her desire to press charges, leading to both Mabius and the intoxicated woman being arrested for simple battery. As officers attempted to bring Mabius outside the bar, he became increasingly belligerent and resisted commands, prompting deputies to arrest him for resisting arrest without violence. Mabius, who is best known for his lengthy series of Hallmark credits and regular appearances in the early aughts sitcom Ugly Betty, was arrested after an altercation in a Nassau County bar during the early morning hours on Thursday, Feb. 20, according to local CW affiliate WJXT. 🎬 🎬 The Nassau County Sheriff's Office told reporters that the incident occurred at about 2 a.m. at The Goat on Lofton Square Court, an Irish-themed bar in Fernandina Beach, Fla. A police report reviewed by several outlets, including People and The Florida-Times Union, accused Mabius and a 40-year-old woman of creating a disturbance. Law enforcement said the two were intoxicated. Witnesses told the outlet that the dispute peaked after the bartender asked the Signed, Sealed, Delivered star and the unnamed woman to leave when the duo allegedly began spitting on several patrons. The 53-year-old actor has also been accused of pushing another woman to the ground and pulling out 'fistfuls' of her hair. Deputies told WJXT that they separated Mabius and the woman when they arrived on scene but that the actor became 'increasingly belligerent' when he was held outside the bar for questioning. Law enforcement officials also claimed that the actor was generally uncooperative with the investigation. Neither Mabius nor a rep for the actor has publicly addressed the arrest report. 'This type of behavior will not be tolerated in our community, regardless of celebrity status. Our deputies quickly dealt with an uncooperative individual, and we're thankful no one was seriously injured during this unfortunate incident,' Sheriff Bill Leeper said in a statement shared with WJXT. The victim, who remained anonymous in the report, ultimately declined to press charges. Mabius and the woman were then arrested for simple battery and resisting without violence. He faces two misdemeanor charges stemming from an alleged fight at a Fernandina Beach bar. USA TODAY has reached out to Mabius' representative for comment. According to the arresting deputy, an alleged female victim gave a written statement claiming Mabius knocked her and another woman to the ground and started pulling her hair out of her scalp. The second woman who was knocked over was also later arrested for battery and resisting arrest without violence after other patrons said she was "being disrespectful" and spitting on them. The alleged victim and another witness who spoke with deputies declined to press charges against either arrestee, per the arrest report. Responding deputies say Mabius "became more belligerent" while he was outside with them following the alleged incident. After he allegedly "tried to stand up and walk behind" one of the investigating officers, other deputies "had to escort him back to the bench and placed him under arrest for resisting without violence." Mabius' case is "awaiting trial," per his inmate profile. USA TODAY has reached out to the Nassau County Clerk for information about the actor's criminal case proceedings. Mabius, who played Daniel Meade, the editor-in-chief and son of the publisher of fictional magazine Mode throughout "Ugly Betty's" run, also starred in Showtime's "The L Word" and the Hallmark Channel series "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" as well as its many spinoff movies.
