The Ford Mach 4 could be the brand's first sedan since 2020

Ford Motor Company just trademarked a new name that has the automotive industry abuzz. On February 25th, Ford filed a new trademark application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for the name 'Mach 4.' Speculation that Ford will slap this on a four-door vehicle isn't a huge stretch. This development has many enthusiasts wondering if the brand will bring a sedan back into its lineup since the Fusion left in have been eliminating sedans in their lineups for several years now, mainly because American buyers have shifted toward SUVs and trucks, instead. The Chevy Malibu and Impala, Buick Regal and LaCrosse, Mazda6, Toyota Avalon, Hyundai Azera, Volkswagen Passat, etc. all got the axe years ago, as did the Fusion. Ford's current lineup is made up of trucks, SUVs, a single EV (the Mustang Mach-E), and the icon itself, the Mustang pony car. According to Car & Driver, the trademark includes gasoline and electric cars, pickup trucks, and SUVs. There's no specific mention of a Mustang sedan, but the term 'Mach' points to the Mustang's heritage. The original Mustang Mach 1 was built in 1969, and Ford's last Mustang Mach 1 was built in 2023. The Mach badge revival came when Ford gave the moniker to the very successful Mustang Mach-E. In 2018, Ford reportedly showed a concept Mustang sedan to dealers, though that project was ultimately shelved. Last year, Ford CEO Jim Farley added more fuel to the fire, suggesting that a four-door Mustang could happen as long as it retained the performance and spirit of the struck the right chord with the Mustang name for its EV. Given the success of the Mustang Mach-E and the growing trend of automotive sub-brands, the idea of a Mustang sedan isn't really that far-fetched. Ford has already shown its willingness to push the Mustang name beyond its traditional two-door muscle car. While the possibility of a Mustang sedan remains strong, the 'Mach 4' name leaves room for interpretation. There's some speculation that the Mach 4 could be an entirely new performance model or even an off-road supercar similar to the Porsche 911 Safari or the Lamborghini Huracan Sterrato, although that would limit the car's mainstream appeal and send the price near the 2022 Ford GT's $500,000 MSRP. Ford has previously hinted at the development of a standalone Raptor supercar, which could also fall under the Mach 4 moniker. Despite the speculation, Ford has yet to confirm any concrete plans for a four-door Mustang or what vehicle the Mach 4 trademark would be used for. However, the company's willingness to evolve the Mustang brand suggests they're not afraid to take risks — even if it means ruffling purists' feathers the way the Mach-E did initially. Now, that name seems to have been widely accepted, aided partially by the fact that the Mach-E (and especially the GT trim) received excellent reviews from journalists and owners.A new Ford sedan with the Mustang name could generate serious excitement for the brand. For now, the automotive world can only wait to see what the Mach 4 will be, if anything. Regardless of whether the Mach 4 becomes a Mustang sedan, a high-performance sports car, or a super-truck, it's clear that Ford remains committed to pushing boundaries and reimagining its most beloved models. One thing's for sure: whatever form the Mach 4 takes, it's likely to bring plenty of attitude and excitement, just like every Mustang that came before it. Love reading Autoblog? A Mustang Sedan Is Really Coming After All

Read the full story on The Auto Wire For years now, rumors have been circulating about a Ford Mustang sedan coming out. But there are all kinds of crazy rumors in the auto industry, some started by automakers to gauge potential interest in a future product. But a new report claims there are positive signs Ford is ready to move on a four-door Mustang, even if some enthusiasts don't like latest piece of evidence that a Mustang sedan is in the works comes via Ford Authority, which uncovered that the car giant filed to trademark the name 'Mach 4.' Sure, that's not dead-to-rights proof that a four-door version of the Mustang is coming, but it's getting there. It's possible a four-motor, all-electric Mustang could be called the Mach 4, similar to how the all-electric 'Mustang' crossover is called the Mach-E. After all, the number four might not be referring to how many doors a pony car has. But it also could. Also possible, Ford and other automakers will file for trademarks they don't use or aren't going to use for a while. Sometimes it's to keep competitors from grabbing names they might use in the future or they feel are too similar to their established lines. And sometimes companies intend to do one thing, but plans change. After all, Ford has the 'Thunderbird' trademark still, but nothing has been done with that. Considering how all-in the automaker was with EVs a couple of years ago, we find it surprising that name wasn't slapped on some soulless all-electric crossover. Back to the Mach 4 name, with rumors of a Mustang sedan floating around for years, that's the first thing to come to everyone's mind. Some dealers have even claimed that concept sketches were shown to them years ago, the automaker soliciting feedback on how viable such a vehicle would be. Would you buy a Mustang sedan? Ford Mach 4 Trademark Sure Sounds Like A Good Name For The Rumored Four-Door Mustang Sedan

In an effort to expand its performance offerings, Ford seems to be working on a car you might find shocking: a four-door Mustang sedan. It would help further expand the Mustang lineup after the success of the electric Mach-E crossover, especially considering that the sport coupe market isn't as big as it once was. It would also help Ford get back into the normal car market, years after the automaker went all in on trucks, SUVs and crossovers. We've heard rumors about a potential Mustang sedan for a while now, and a recent trademark filing shows Ford may have already chosen a name for the Mustang sedan. Read more: Dodge Will Pay You $10 Per Horsepower To Buy A New Charger, Challenger, Or Durango First spotted by Ford Authority, a trademark filing from February 25th shows that Ford filed to register the name "Mach 4." In the filing description, it says that this is for "Motor vehicles, namely gasoline and electric automobiles, pick-up trucks, sport utility vehicles and their structural parts." Sadly there isn't any more information provided to give us a better clue as to what Ford is working on. The current status of the filing shows it's also pending with the Trademark office, meaning this name isn't a for sure thing just yet. Ford has been toying with the idea of a Mustang sedan for more than 50 years. In the early 1960s, Ford did a mockup of a Mustang sedan that looked production ready, though it never saw the light of day. A Mustang sedan proposal popped up again in 2005 for the S197 generation, but according to Ford Authority, the sedan never made it past the concept stage and was never shown to the public. The automaker even went so far as to create a full-scale model of this Mustang sedan around 2005, though unfortunately, photos of that model are unavailable, and like all design studies, this was an internal concept that was never shown to the public. However, the fact that Ford went so far as to create a design study for a four-door pony car proves that at least some within the walls of The Blue Oval were receptive to such a machine at that time. Another Mustang sedan concept was apparently shown to dealers in 2018, but nothing came of that one either. The same thing happened in the summer of 2024 following a few years of rumors, which gives even more credibility to this recent trademark filing. At a dealer conference, CEO Jim Farley showed off a rendering of a Mustang sedan called, you guessed it, Mach 4. It was presented in addition to some other performance and off-road variants of the Mustang as well. Would a Mustang sedan make sense? Totally. Given that Dodge is offering the new Charger Daytona in coupe and four-door liftback sedan body styles, it would be a perfect competitor for its crosstown rival. While it could piss off Mustang purists even more than the Mustang Mach-E did, this sedan could also help bring more buyers to the brand if the price is right. Whatever Ford has planned for this Mustang sedan, I for one can't wait to see it. Read the original article on Jalopnik.

Ford 'Mach 4' Trademark Fuels Future Mustang Sedan Rumors

filed a new trademark with the USPTO that could point to a sedan being built in the near future. The company filed to trademark the name "Mach 4," conjuring images of Ford's iconic pony car stretched to accommodate a set of rear doors. The idea of a four-door Mustang isn't totally new, the company has been selling an electric SUV called the for four years, after all. Automotive subbrands are all the rage these days. Everyone's got one. GMC spun off the Hummer into its own thing, Jeep revived the Wagoneer as its own brand, and Chevy is reportedly preparing to spin Corvette into a standalone brand. Thanks to the introduction of the Mustang Mach-E several years ago, Ford also knows how to transform a popular nameplate into something new. Now, a new report from Ford Authority revealed that Ford has applied for a new trademark with the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) for the name "Mach 4." The application was filed on February 25. According to the USPTO site, the trademark covers "Motor vehicles, namely gasoline and electric automobiles, pickup trucks, sport-utility vehicles, and their structural parts." Rumors that Ford will build a Mustang sedan have been around for years, even going as far back as the Mustang's first generation, according to Ford Authority. Fast forward to 2018, and Ford reportedly showed a concept model to dealers before the project was shelved. The outlet also reported that last May, Ford CEO Jim Farley said he "believes" the automaker could build a four-door Mustang as long as it has "all the performance and attitude of the original." There's also the possibility that this Mach 4 trademark somehow relates to the standalone Raptor supercar Ford has teased in the past. Nothing is known about that particular project, but in January, Farley told Top Gear, "We're in the middle of creating something, so we don't have all the answers yet, but the question is, should Ford make an off-road supercar? Not a version of a car, a standalone supercar." Given that Ford has already angered the feistiest of Mustang purists with the electric Mustang Mach-E, there's a real possibility that the automaker could introduce a sedan. Then again, none of the previous Mustang sedan rumors have amounted to anything, so we'll have to wait and see if this trademark also turns into a nothingburger. Ford Files Trademark for 'Mach 4,' Fueling 4-Door Mustang Rumors

A four-door Mustang coupe appears to be closer than ever to becoming a reality, because as of Tuesday, as Ford has officially filed to trademark the name 'Mach 4' for a motor vehicle. While automakers file trademarks all the time, this one — initially spotted by Ford Authority — has a little more validity to it, thanks to a report from Automotive News last summer which said Ford showed dealers a rendering of a four-door Mustang with a coupe-like body named Mach 4 at a conference in Las Vegas, alongside a lifted, off-road-oriented Mustang variant. Boosting the report's validity: one of the vehicles Ford showed at that dealer conference is already reality, that being the RTR EcoBoost model revealed at the Detroit Auto Show last month. There's no guarantee Ford will build every model it previews to the dealers or even files trademarks for, but all the signs are there. A Mustang sedan has long been rumored to be in the cards, with Ford even building a concept version during the car's early years. It's unclear whether the four-door Mustang — which would become the sole sedan in Ford's current lineup — would be powered by gasoline or electricity, but considering the Mustang Mach-E already exists to cover the latter (and is presumably around the same size as a hypothetical Mustang sedan), internal combustion seems a more likely possibility. Likewise, an off-road-oriented 'Stang would seem a logical next step for the Blue Oval, considering the brand has already dabbled into this space with the Mustang Mach-E Rally. More sports car makers are diving into the rugged/off-road space these days, with Porsche giving us the 911 Dakar and Lamborghini the Huracan Sterrato. A Mustang along those lines would provide similar delights at a far lower price.
