Popular beach plagued with E. coli is closed AGAIN after unsafe bacteria found in water

A troubled beach in Michigan is closed once again after scientists detected an unhealthy level of E. coli in the water. St. Clair Shores Memorial Beach Park Beach, which sits on Lake St. Clair in Macomb County, has been shuttered to the public since May 21 due to high bacteria levels from an unknown source, MLive reported. Officials with the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy last took samples of the water on Thursday. This particular beach is frequently closed due to bacterial contaminations. Officials had to close it seven separate times last summer alone. The longest stretch of time residents weren't allowed to set foot in the water was from late June to late July 2024, when the beach was closed for 26 days. The Macomb County Health Department previously told WXYZ-TV that the shape of the beach is why pollution collects in its waters. That Detroit-based television station interviewed frustrated residents in July 2024, many of whom pointed out that the beach was closed more often than it was open. 'We come here all the time. We don't like it that the beach is not open. It used to be a long time ago, but I don't know why it's not anymore,' Lori Nowicki said. 'Everyone wants to swim here, but they can't because of the pollution,' Ruth Higgins said. Nancy Kilanowski admitted that she doesn't go to Lake St. Clair often, but said she's 'never seen the beach open'. Residents said the area has a staggering number of geese, which experts have said could be the source of the routine contamination of Lake St. Clair. Feces from geese, seagulls, ducks, dogs and deer are the sources of the elevated bacteria levels, said Tom Barnes, the division director of Macomb County's Environmental Health Services. Barnes said rain and wind pushes the fecal matter in the water. If it lingers long enough, contamination problems become a real concern and lead to the closures. Barnes said treating the water isn't a viable solution, rather suggesting raking the beach, moving the geese population elsewhere and keeping trash cans covered. 'As far as treatment of the water goes, I don't see anybody doing any additives or doing anything like that to it. That hasn't come up and just generally with good beach maintenance practices, you can generally get ahead of it pretty well,' he said.

Macomb County woman charged with firearm violation after teen allegedly brings gun to school

The Brief Multiple students were charged for allegedly bringing a loaded gun to Center Line High School to show off. Prosecutor Pete Lucido told FOX 2 that the student said he took it from his grandmother's house. She has since been charged with a safe storage of a firearm violation. MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. (FOX 2) - Three students from Center Line High School were charged and accused of bringing a loaded handgun to campus and taking photos with it on May 13. What they're saying Prosecutor Pete Lucido told FOX 2 that the student said he took it from his grandmother's house. Investigators say the gun was not safely secured. "As a result, grandma has a duty under state law that we have to put our weapons away knowing that we're having either invited guests coming over to the house, such as our own grandchildren," he said. 52-year-old Lisa Renee Christy of Clinton Township was charged with a safe storage of a firearm violation. The misdemeanor came with a $100,000 personal bond. "You don't even have to have knowledge that the kid is doing it, just the kid having access to the firearm is enough to violate that law. Another provision about that law is she was only charged with a misdemeanor," said Action Impact Firearms Director Bill Kucyk. "Had anybody been injured, that jumps up to a felony. It's so fixable with the quick access safes, even with the gun locks they're giving out for free with every new gun. It's so easy to keep yourself out of this position." What you can do You can get gun locks for free at many police stations throughout the state and at free community events. Kucyk pointed out that some gun owners may steer away from the cheap cable locks because they can take a while to remove. There are some safes that keep your weapon secured but are a little pricier. "Not only is it legally required, I think ethically, and morally you don't want your gun used to injure anybody else. I certainly don't, I don't want my gun stolen out of my car or my home," he said. A responsible choice can keep your community safer. The Source FOX 2 spoke to Macomb County Prosecutor Pete Lucido and Action Impact Firearms director Bill Kucyk for information in this report.

Clinton Township grandmother charged after grandson allegedly brings her gun to school

A Clinton Township woman has been charged with a firearms safe storage violation in connection with a handgun seen at a high school in Macomb County, Michigan The investigation started May 13 at Center Line High School, where a lockdown was invoked after school officials learned a photo was circulating of a student in a high school bathroom with what appeared to be a handgun. The Macomb County Prosecutor's office later announced three students were charged with weapons-free school violation and lying to a peace officer. One of them was also charged with receiving and concealing a weapon and carrying a concealed weapon. Lisa Renee Christy, 52, of Clinton Township, has been charged with firearms safe storage violation. The Macomb County Prosecutor's office alleges that her grandson "found her handgun and ammunition in an unlocked room," and then he took the handgun to school, where two other students got into possession of it. She did not know the firearm was taken at the time, the press release said. The safe storage violation is a misdemeanor punishable by up to 93 days and/or a fine of $500. The prosecutor's office said, "This is the maximum offense under the law" that can be charged based on the evidence that is available so far. Arraignment on that charge took place in Clinton Township District Court 41-B. A personal bond of $100,000 personal recognizance was set with the condition of no possession of firearms. A pretrial conference is scheduled for June 3. "Safe storage of firearms is required by the laws of Michigan, and all responsible gun owners must know they will be held accountable for violations," Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido said in his statement. "The Macomb County Prosecutor's Office takes gun possession in a school extremely seriously. Such conduct in school not only endangers the safety of the students and faculty, but it also disrupts the entire educational environment." Lucido said the prosecutor's office recently was approved for a grant that will support a public awareness campaign later this year on the topic of safe firearm storage.

Michigan man accused of killing roommate pleads no contest to manslaughter

A 54-year-old Michigan man accused of beating his roommate to death over a year ago pleaded no contest to manslaughter. According to the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office, Mark Joseph Newsome, of Roseville, was living in a group home on Jan. 31, 2024, when he got into an altercation with his roommate, 72-year-old Dale Francis Mitchell. Prosecutors say another person witnessed the fight and called police. Responding officers found Mitchell unconscious and bleeding on the floor. The Roseville Fire Department was also called to the home and attempted lifesaving measures; however, Mitchell was pronounced dead at a local hospital, according to a news release. Mark Newsome Macomb County Prosecutor's Office Police arrested Newsome and initially charged him with second-degree murder. On Tuesday, he pleaded no contest to manslaughter, which comes with a five to 15-year sentence agreement. "Mr. Mitchell's life was cut short in the very dwelling that should have been his safe place.
