Falcons GM Terry Fontenot Shares Update on Kirk Cousins' Status

Kirk Cousins' 2024 season with the Atlanta Falcons was up and down, showing moments of strong play but also key mistakes. Despite trade rumors and being benched late in the season, he remains on the roster — a surprise to many fans. Cousins, who signed a four-year, $180 million deal, threw for 3,508 yards with 18 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. He led the Falcons to a 6-8 record as a starter before rookie Michael Penix Jr. took over in Week 16. A rough five-game stretch in which Cousins threw nine interceptions and only one touchdown raised questions about his future. While he's still on the team heading into 2025, it's not clear if he will stay. With a $40 million cap hit and a no-trade clause, his situation has caught attention as the Falcons shift their focus to Penix. Fontenot Addresses Kirk Cousins' Status and Falcons' QB Plans Atlanta Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot reacts during the game against the Las Vegas Lee-Imagn Images Speaking Tuesday on SiriusXM Mad Dog Radio with Adam Schein, Fontenot said the team is staying patient with Cousins' situation — and open to all possibilities. Advertisement 'We have to be patient there and we're always open, not just talking about Kirk, but really anybody on our roster,' Fontenot said. 'I've probably already talked to six or seven GMs since the draft ended. They're talking about their roster, we're talking about our roster, because the draft shifts some things in terms of needs and surplus.' Fontenot said the Falcons will stay aggressive if the right opportunity comes up. 'If something comes to us with Kirk or any other player that makes sense and it's going to help this team, then we're going to be aggressive and we're going to do it,' he said. 'But if it's not going to ultimately help this team, we always have to ask that question: Is it the best for the Atlanta Falcons? And if it is, we're going to be willing to do it.' For now, Cousins remains on the roster as the Falcons head into a new era with Penix. Whether that changes before the season starts is still unknown, but Fontenot made it clear the team is weighing all options to do what's best for the future of the franchise. Jalen Ramsey trade rumors: Sean McVay calls CB 'total stud' amid Rams interest

Jalen Ramsey trade rumors: Sean McVay calls CB 'total stud' amid Rams interest Show Caption Hide Caption Best AFC 2025 NFL Draft picks USA TODAY's Tyler Dragon breaks down which teams in the AFC drafted the best this year. Sports Seriously The Miami Dolphins and star cornerback Jalen Ramsey appear to be heading for a divorce. The two parties mutually agreed to seek a trade, so the three-time All-Pro could end up playing for a new NFL team in 2025. That said, it could also end up being a club familiar to Ramsey. One of his former teams has an apparent interest in re-acquiring him: the Los Angeles Rams. Rams coach Sean McVay has been routinely asked about trading for Ramsey since the mid-April report about the Dolphins seeking a trade. At every step, the 39-year-old coach has given his former Super Bowl-winning starter glowing reviews. The most recent came in an appearance on SiriusXM Mad Dog Radio, when Adam Schein asked McVay his opinion of Ramsey. "He is a total stud," McVay said, as transcribed by ProFootballTalk's Mike Florio, "and you look at – obviously he has continued to play at a really high level. He and I have kept in great touch even since we ended up trading him to Miami. Special competitor, great person, great father." Ramsey performed well across three-and-a-half seasons with the Rams after being acquired via trade ahead of the 2019 NFL trade deadline. He made back-to-back All-Pro teams in his first two full seasons with the Rams and helped them to win Super Bowl 56 in his penultimate campaign with the team. The Rams have struggled to find high-quality cornerback play since Ramsey's departure. Ahkello Witherspoon was their highest-graded cornerback for the 2024 NFL season, ranking 53rd among 116 qualifiers at the position by Pro Football Focus and allowing a 103.1 passer rating. As such, Ramsey – who graded 10th overall and allowed a passer rating of 93.5 – would represent a major upgrade, even as he enters his age-31 season. NFL POWER RANKINGS: Where all 32 teams stand following the 2025 draft Still, McVay wouldn't guarantee the Rams would land Ramsey, noting "there are a lot of layers" in potentially acquiring him, both from a financial and asset-driven perspective. He also expects there to be a strong interest in Ramsey around the league. But as McVay and general manager Les Snead have made it clear during their time running the franchise, the Rams won't be afraid to get aggressive if they believe Ramsey will be a needle-mover. "We're never gonna shy away from opportunities to increase the competitiveness of our roster or add great players, as long as it fits within the framework of everything that an acquisition like that would entail," McVay said.

Bucs fans should take a deep breath when they worry about the offense

Bucs fans should take a deep breath when they worry about the offense Jason Licht has been busy, from being involved in the draft process to now making the media rounds. There is no rest for the Bucs general manager as he is now sharing his big smile talking about his work. Jason Licht was speaking about the Bucs' loaded offense while on Mad Dog Radio, and you could tell by his tone he was not only proud of himself, but he was also excited to see his work in motion later this year. He discussed the idea that the team has too many mouths to feed, a common concern with an offense that has as many weapons as they do. He quickly put that fire out for fans. "I think it goes to the character and fabric of this team and the way Todd (Bowles) has set the tone in the locker room. I think we have a lot of unselfish players that just want to win at this point. I think if you were to ask Mike Evans what's more important to him right now, I think it would be getting another Super Bowl. . .it's just a great group of guys." The locker room the Bucs have built over time has definitely shown that they can handle a variety of personalities. Todd Bowles has been in a lot of cities, worked under various coaches, and he knows how to handle it all. Outside of the locker room, he has Baker Mayfield in the huddle handling it all. If he passes for another 4,000-plus yards, there will be enough yards and touchdowns for everyone.

Steelers QB Target May Require 'Patience'

The NFL Draft is finally over, and we can now start looking toward those moves that teams are expected to make "post-draft." One of those teams is the Pittsburgh Steelers, who appear to be a favorite to land Falcons veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins via trade. Advertisement The Falcons previously have said they're in no hurry to move Cousins, who lost his starting role to rookie Michael Penix Jr. mid-way through last season. Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot appeared on SiriusXM Mad Dog Radio to update Cousins' status in Atlanta. 'We have to be patient there and we always we're open with not just talking about Kirk, but with really anybody on our roster,' Fontenot said. 'You know, we have a lot of those calls with — I've probably talked to already six or seven GMs, since the draft ended, and they're talking about their roster. We're talking about our roster because after you get through the draft, that shifts some things in terms of needs and surplus and all that. And so we're always patient with those types of things because if something comes to us with Kirk or any other player that makes sense and it's going to help this team, then we're going to be aggressive and we're going to do it. "And if it's not something that's going to ultimately help this team, we always have to ask that question: Is it the best for the Atlanta Falcons or this organization? And if it is, we're going to be willing to do it. But all that communication is always ongoing.' Advertisement Last time we heard, the Falcons reportedly wanted a team to pick up $20 million of Cousins' $37.5 million guaranteed money. Will the Steelers be ok covering that? For Cousins? If Aaron Rodgers declines the Steelers' invitation to play, then they might not have a choice.
