Falcons GM Terry Fontenot Shares Update on Kirk Cousins' Status

Yahoo05-05-2025

Kirk Cousins' 2024 season with the Atlanta Falcons was up and down, showing moments of strong play but also key mistakes. Despite trade rumors and being benched late in the season, he remains on the roster — a surprise to many fans. Cousins, who signed a four-year, $180 million deal, threw for 3,508 yards with 18 touchdowns and 16 interceptions.
He led the Falcons to a 6-8 record as a starter before rookie Michael Penix Jr. took over in Week 16. A rough five-game stretch in which Cousins threw nine interceptions and only one touchdown raised questions about his future. While he's still on the team heading into 2025, it's not clear if he will stay. With a $40 million cap hit and a no-trade clause, his situation has caught attention as the Falcons shift their focus to Penix.

Speaking Tuesday on SiriusXM Mad Dog Radio with Adam Schein, Fontenot said the team is staying patient with Cousins' situation — and open to all possibilities.

'We have to be patient there and we're always open, not just talking about Kirk, but really anybody on our roster,' Fontenot said. 'I've probably already talked to six or seven GMs since the draft ended. They're talking about their roster, we're talking about our roster, because the draft shifts some things in terms of needs and surplus.'
Fontenot said the Falcons will stay aggressive if the right opportunity comes up.
'If something comes to us with Kirk or any other player that makes sense and it's going to help this team, then we're going to be aggressive and we're going to do it,' he said. 'But if it's not going to ultimately help this team, we always have to ask that question: Is it the best for the Atlanta Falcons? And if it is, we're going to be willing to do it.'
For now, Cousins remains on the roster as the Falcons head into a new era with Penix. Whether that changes before the season starts is still unknown, but Fontenot made it clear the team is weighing all options to do what's best for the future of the franchise.

Commanders Coach Opens up on Jayden Daniels' Growing Comfort Level

Heading into the 2025 season, Jayden Daniels will be looking to avoid going through a sophomore slump. As the rising star prepares for his second season in the NFL, his coach seems confident that he'll remain on the path toward stardom. Over the years, countless quarterbacks have reached the NFL and had an immediate impact as a rookie. However, Daniels is still a bit of a rare case. Along with throwing for over 3,500 yards and 25 touchdowns, he managed to lead Washington all the way to the NFC Championship game. Earlier this week, Daniels and the majority of the Commanders began their ramp-up for this season with mandatory minicamp. While speaking with the media, head coach Dan Quinn reflected on the growth he's seen in the young QB compared to last year. He went on to name multiple key improvements of the reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year. Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels during an NFL football game against the Atlanta Falcons, December 29, 2024, in Landover, Maryland. The Commanders defeated the Atlanta Falcons in overtime Sunday night, clinching their first spot in the NFL playoff since 2020. More Stephanie Scarbrough/ASSOCIATED PRESS "I've always felt he had real control of things and we work at the line of scrimmage a lot and he's really comfortable in that," Quinn said of Daniels, according to SI. "He was always somebody that really was on his details. What I guess seeing now is just the accuracy, the footwork, so more of his body mechanics that he wanted to emphasize. I see that coming through in his play." Last season, Daniels was playing with house money as a rookie just looking to prove himself. That will not be the case in year two, as he has lofty expectations to live up to. After leading his team deep into the postseason, many want to see him keep solidifying himself as one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL. In the span of one year, Daniels was able to turn the Commanders from a retooling team to a contender. Now, the pressure is on for him to keep Washington in a position to contend in the NFC. Daniels does have a lot of things going for him when it comes to maintaining his current trajectory. For starters, he knows what he's getting into now with a year of experience under his belt. Also, Washington continues to put him in a position to succeed. They went out and upgraded the cast of talent around Daniels in the offseason, most notably trading for Deebo Samuel. Coming off his strong rookie campaign, Daniels looks ready to take the reigns as one of the premier QBs in the NFL. Only time will tell if he can continue to answer the call for the Commanders as the face of the franchise.

Yankees bullpen uncertain as injury concerns grow

Yankees bullpen uncertain as injury concerns grow originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Yankees optioned Brent Headrick to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after Wednesday night's win in Kansas City. No corresponding move has been announced yet, but the bullpen is down a man, and the options are thinning out. Advertisement Headrick had been used in low-leverage spots and posted a 4.73 ERA over 11 appearances. He pitched well enough to stick, but with a limited role and an option remaining, he was the easy move. New York Yankees relief pitcher Luke WeaverKen Blaze-Imagn Images The timing comes as the Yankees are already shorthanded and in the middle of a stretch where they play 16 games in 16 days. 7 Luke Weaver is on the injured list with a hamstring strain, and now Jake Cousins is dealing with a UCL injury that could keep him out long-term. Cousins had been one of the more effective arms at Triple-A and was a likely candidate for a call-up later this month. That leaves the Yankees with fewer clear paths. Advertisement Cam Schlittler and Allan Winans are both candidates at Triple-A. Schlittler has pitched well, though he's never appeared in a major league game. Winans has experience and has been logging consistent innings. Both could give the Yankees length if needed. This isn't a crisis, but it's a roster pinch. With Weaver out, Cousins shelved, and no obvious choice on the 40-man roster, the Yankees will either need to make a corresponding move soon or go short in the bullpen for a day or two. That rarely lasts long. The Yankees have managed the bullpen with discipline all year, but the cracks are showing. And this stretch, with injuries piling up and innings stacking, will test how deep that bullpen really is.
