The New York Yankees optioned Brent Headrick to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after Wednesday night's win in Kansas City. No corresponding move has been announced yet, but the bullpen is down a man, and the options are thinning out.

Headrick had been used in low-leverage spots and posted a 4.73 ERA over 11 appearances. He pitched well enough to stick, but with a limited role and an option remaining, he was the easy move.

The timing comes as the Yankees are already shorthanded and in the middle of a stretch where they play 16 games in 16 days. 7
Luke Weaver is on the injured list with a hamstring strain, and now Jake Cousins is dealing with a UCL injury that could keep him out long-term. Cousins had been one of the more effective arms at Triple-A and was a likely candidate for a call-up later this month.
That leaves the Yankees with fewer clear paths.

Cam Schlittler and Allan Winans are both candidates at Triple-A. Schlittler has pitched well, though he's never appeared in a major league game. Winans has experience and has been logging consistent innings. Both could give the Yankees length if needed.
This isn't a crisis, but it's a roster pinch.
With Weaver out, Cousins shelved, and no obvious choice on the 40-man roster, the Yankees will either need to make a corresponding move soon or go short in the bullpen for a day or two. That rarely lasts long.
The Yankees have managed the bullpen with discipline all year, but the cracks are showing. And this stretch, with injuries piling up and innings stacking, will test how deep that bullpen really is.

Rays call up shortstop Carson Williams, place Ha-Seong Kim on the IL with recurring back trouble

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — The Tampa Bay Rays called up top shortstop prospect Carson Williams on Thursday before their series opener against the St. Louis Cardinals. The Rays made the move as they placed shortstop Ha-Seong Kim on the injured list with recurring back trouble. Manager Kevin Cash, speaking before the move was finalized, said he was eager to see Williams join the team. 'I am excited for sure,' Cash said. 'Carson, I give him a lot of credit. He had a great year last year, continued to put himself on the map, and after some early season struggles, he's really come out of it and done well lately for Durham.' Williams arrived at George M. Steinbrenner Field less than an hour gametime and was not in the lineup. He is expected to see his first action later in the series. The 21-year-old was selected with the 28th overall pick in the 2021 draft. Known for his strong glove and developing power, he earned a MiLB Gold Glove in High Single-A in 2022. At Triple-A Durham this season, Williams hit .213 with a .318 on-base percentage and .447 slugging percentage. He has 23 home runs, 55 RBIs and 22 stolen bases in 111 games, and is ranked among MLB Pipeline's top 50 prospects. For the Rays, the call-up marks a step toward the future in a season that has gone off track. Forced to play their home schedule at the Yankees' spring training ballpark after hurricane damage to Tropicana Field, the club has been beset by injuries and inconsistent play. They entered Thursday 61-66, in fourth place in the AL East and 12 1/2 games behind division-leading Toronto. Kim's injury created the opening. The shortstop was examined Wednesday and is expected to be shut down for several days. Cash said the club is optimistic Kim's stint on the injured list will be close to the minimum 10 days. ___

The citizens of Pompeii and Herculaneum believed for centuries that they'd heard her last rumble. The citizens of Pompeii and Herculaneum, alas, were incorrect. And around 79 AD, Vesuvius showed them just how wrong they were. Advertisement Red Sox/Yankees is downright – is Vesuvian a word? Let's make it a word – Vesuvian in that way. When you are in the middle of the chronic rumble, you have a hard time believing it will ever be quiet ever again. Red Sox promote prospect Jhostynxon Garcia, place OF Wilyer Abreu on injured list

NEW YORK (AP) — After calling up highly-rated prospects Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer in June, the Red Sox added another prospect Thursday when they recalled outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia from Triple-A Worcester. Garcia was called up to replace Wilyer Abreu, who was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right calf strain. Abreu originally was injured Sunday and the move is retroactive to Monday. The 22-year-old Garcia signed with the Red Sox as a non-drafted free agent from Venezuela in 2019 and is Boston's No. 3 prospect according to which also ranks him as the 77th overall prospect in baseball. He was given the nickname 'The Password' by fans on social media due to the spelling of his first name. 'He swings a lot,' manager Alex Cora said about Garcia before the Red Sox opened a four-game series with the Yankees. 'Drives the ball to right-center, can do that with two strikes. He's a great defender and a good baserunner.' Garcia was not in the starting lineup Thursday but is likely to start in center field Friday. Garcia has split this season between Double-A Portland and Worcester and hit .289 with 20 homers, 73 RBIs and an .875 OPS while primarily starting in center field. With Worcester, Garcia is hitting .303 with 17 homers and 56 RBIs. Abreu is hitting .253 with a team-leading 22 homers and 69 RBIs in 108 games. Cora said he did not get any testing but is optimistic Abreu will miss the minimum amount of time. 'I think it's the right move and hopefully he'll be back with us as soon as possible,' Cora said. Promoting Garcia and putting Abreu on the IL was among five roster moves for the Red Sox, who began Thursday with eight losses in their last 12 games and trail the Yankees by two games for the AL's first wild-card. Infielder David Hamilton was recalled from Worcester along with pitcher Richard Fitts. Boston also designated infielder Abraham Toro for assignment. Hamilton, who hit eighth and started at second base Thursday, is hitting .174 with three homers and 12 RBIs in 69 games this season. He also has 17 stolen bases in 21 chances after stealing 33 bases in 98 games last season. Toro hit .239 with seven homers and 27 RBIs in 77 games. He batted .271 before the All-Star break but hit .171 over his last 25 games. 'We're not here without him,' Cora said about Toro. 'He did an amazing job.' Fitts is 1-4 with a 4.83 ERA in 10 starts for the Red Sox, who acquired him from the Yankees for Alex Verdugo in December 2023. He last started for Boston on July 28 in Minnesota and was 2-1 with a 4.00 ERA in six starts at Worcester. Walker Buehler, who is 7-7 with a 5.40 ERA in 22 starts, is slated to start Monday in Baltimore but Cora said the Red Sox had not talked about it yet.
