'I'm really proud of the way that we attacked that today, and we were able to consistently score runs throughout the whole game,' Holmes said. 'Edy knew that all she had to do was do her best, and she did that.'

Latour came in having yielded just two runs in 26 postseason innings, and she turned in another standout performance. After yielding two hits in the first frame, she was untouchable, retiring 12 consecutive batters from the third through the sixth and never allowing another runner past second.

'Having that run almost like each inning was great,' Latour said. 'It gave me the confidence I needed to keep pitching. I just knew I had to do my part.'
After getting held scoreless in the first by Bears freshman Akira'ley Vazquez, Dighton-Rehoboth began to capitalize on defensive miscues behind her as the game wore on.
In the second inning, Sara Marsella singled with one out and later crossed the plate on a misplay at second. An inning later, Eva Ainsworth plated another run after a high throw got past third baseman Hayden Gomes.

The Falcons broke it open in the sixth with a two-out rally, started when senior Izzy Moss got aboard with a double and was driven in by senior Haleigh Kelley. Then, Horrocks put on the finishing touches with a two-run bomb that sailed well over the left field fence.
The home run was also the 100th hit of Horrocks' career, putting the finishing touches on a game — and season — that she could not have drawn up any better.
'Not having to have your last game be a loss is just not something everyone gets to do,' Horrocks said. 'It's just so exciting, such a good feeling to come out on top again.
Dighton-Rehoboth sophomore Edy Latour scrattered four hits, striking out five, and retired 12 consective batters from the third through sixth inning.

QBs Williams, Young, Darnold Must Start Proving Themselves In 2025
The NFL has become a guessing game when it comes to preseason performance. As the league heads into the second week of preseason games, head coaches around the league are rolling the dice and a majority of teams will play many of their key starters – including quarterbacks – in an effort to prepare for the season. What does this really mean? It means that for a series, perhaps two but no more than one quarter, the starters will be on the field and put their skills and abilities to the test. A coach like Ben Johnson in Chicago will actually see quarterback Caleb Williams play in a game against the Buffalo Bills Sunday. Williams had a less-than-impressive rookie season under the Bears previous coaching regime and there is pressure on the No. 1 selection in the 2024 NFL Draft to show what he can do under center. Johnson was considered the top coach available last year during the NFL's hiring season and he is not married to Williams. If he is not happy with Williams and the way he performs, the Bears could be looking for another new quarterback at the end of the season. Will 10 to 12 plays in the second preseason game be enough to draw a conclusion for Johnson or any other coach in a similar position around the league? Absolutely not, but it is enough for a first impression to be formed. Once a quarterback delivers that to a key decision maker, it may not be so easy to change that impression as the summer moves along and the start of the season gets closer. Williams is just one of the NFL's quarterbacks who is under pressure to perform this season. Bryce Young of the Carolina Panthers is another. He was the No. 1 pick in the 2023 draft and after a disastrous rookie season, he made significant progress in the second half of last season. He had been benched after the second week of the season in favor of veteran retread Andy Dalton, but the Red Rifle was involved in an October car accident and that allowed Young to take the field once again. Young finished on a positive note, leading the Panthers to a 4-5 record overall and a 92.2 passer rating in the final weeks of the season with 10 touchdowns and three interceptions. A good start is essential if Young wants to ensure that his fifth-year option is picked up by Carolina. Darnold has to prove himself once again The Seattle Seahawks decided to move on from Geno Smith at the conclusion of last season even though he led the team to two consecutive winning seasons. The Seahawks have decided to go with ex-Viking Sam Darnold after he led Minnesota to a shocking 14-3 record last year. Darnold is coming off the best season of his career as he completed 361 of 545 passes for 4,319 yards with a remarkable 35-12 TD-to-interception ratio. That was a brilliant year under quarterback whisperer Kevin O'Connell and it earned Darnold a three-year, $100 million contract. The quarterback will be paid $37.5 million this season, but the team can walk away from Darnold if general manager John Schneider and head coach Mike Macdonald are not thrilled with his performance. Making matters more complicated were Seattle's personnel decisions that sent key receivers DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett packing. The Seahawks are going forward with Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Cooper Kupp and rookie Tony Horton at the wideout position, and that may be a major downturn from Seattle's previous receivers. The Cardinals have been waiting for Kyler Murray to become an elite NFL quarterback since the 2019 season. Murray is an elite athlete who compares to Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens. Murray has not produced at that level. He has a 36-45-1 record with the Cardinals and just one postseason appearance. He has a cap hit of $43 million this season and $53 million in 2026, and the Cardinals are expecting a huge season from him. The heat is clearly on Murray to produce this season.

Ben Johnson Clarifies Whether Starters Will Play Against Bills In Preseason Week 2
Ben Johnson and the Chicago Bears are gearing up for their second preseason game this weekend against the Buffalo Bills. The Bears were unable to earn a win over the Dolphins in preseason Week 1, with the game ending in a 24-24 tie. Wins and losses don't matter in the preseason, but it still would be nice to get a win. As a result, many are curious as to whether or not the Bears' starters would get to play against the Bills. Well, head coach Ben Johnson confirmed that the starters will indeed play. The coach didn't clarify how may snaps his top unit would get, saying that is 'to be determined.' 'We like to say upstairs, 'No one adjusts better than us,'' Johnson said. 'I think our players understand that, and so what we do as coaches is we … flow, we get the numbers from sports science, whatever we need to do what's best for the team, what's best for each individual player, that's how we determine that.' It will be great for Caleb Williams to get some live snaps in front of the Soldier Field crowd this weekend, especially against a consistent playoff team like the Bills. The Bears' offensive struggles this summer have not been a secret, so it will help to work out the kinks in a game environment before the season gets underway. Williams is clearly the starting quarterback, but the backup signal-callers impressed in the opener. Tyson Bagent completed 13 of 19 passes for 103 yards with one touchdown and one interception, while veteran journeyman Case Keenum completed eight of ten passes for 80 yards and two touchdowns. If Williams comes out and performs well against the Bills, it will alleviate many worries about the offense. It's unlikely Johnson will want to leave Williams in for long, but it would be nice to see a couple of successful drives. Another interesting position to watch will be the left tackle spot. Since the starters are playing, it will be interesting to see whether Braxton Jones begins as the left tackle. The Bears and Bills will kickoff on Sunday night and then the Bears will end their preseason slate against the Chiefs on August 22. Falcons signing CB C.J. Henderson
The Atlanta Falcons have been tinkering with their roster again in the run-up to their second preseason game, cutting ties with UDFA offensive lineman Michael Gonzalez and placing defensive back Grayland Arnold on the reserve/injured list while signing safety Ronnie Harrison as an inside linebacker and adding center Jake Hanson. Now they've made another move with an eye on potentially shoring up their secondary depth ahead of the season. The reason this one will cause a raised eyebrow or two is because of who the player is. That would be C.J. Henderson, the former first round pick in the same draft where the Falcons later took A.J. Terrell, and the fact that he reportedly chose Atlanta over other landing spots. Both cornerbacks taken ahead of Terrell will now have a stint in Atlanta—Jeff Okudah is the other—and neither has been close to as successful as Terrell since 2020. Henderson was touted as a young, hyper-athletic, and long cornerback who could dominate receivers on the outside, but his career has been defined by inconsistency and injuries. He last appeared in an NFL regular season game in 2023 with the Carolina Panthers, where he was a seven game starter and allowed 310 yards and four touchdowns on the year. In Atlanta, Henderson is vying for a reserve role, and while you might think his late arrival to the roster suggests he's more likely to push for a practice squad spot initially, there may well be room for him. While Natrone Brooks has been customarily good this summer, Atlanta's other boundary corner reserve options have had more mixed training camps and initial preseason games, with Lamar Jackson scuffling a bit against the Lions, Clark Phillips dealing with a rib injury, and Cobee Bryant looking like the rookie he is early on and unfortunately dealing with an injury. There's a chance that getting up to speed quickly and impressing in the final two preseason games will give Henderson a real shot at CB5, behind starters A.J. Terrell, Mike Hughes, (likely) Dee Alford, and rookie Billy Bowman. We'll have to see about that, but give Henderson a warm welcome while we wait for the corresponding move and Friday night's preseason game.
