'Special Horse': Favorite Patch Adams Powers Clear In Woody Stephens
'Special Horse': Favorite Patch Adams Powers Clear In Woody Stephens originally appeared on Paulick Report. Patch Adams confirmed on Saturday what his connections suspected all along--he's a sprinter. Advertisement The Into Mischief colt proved to be a burgeoning sprint star on Kentucky Derby Day at Churchill Downs for trainer Brad Cox, who subsequently brought his talent to Saratoga, where on the Belmont Stakes undercard the former potential classic hopeful revealed an elite aptitude at a shorter distance in the $500,000 Woody Stephens (G1). Luis Saez roused Patch Adams from just off the pace and he stormed down the center of the track to dispatch Madaket Road and pacesetter Macho Music for a 2 1/4-length victory. Madaket Road hung on for second, and Big Truzz was third another 3 1/4 lengths back. Champion Citizen Bull was fourth and Macho Music faded to finish seventh. 'It was a pretty exciting stretch (run)," Saez said of Patch Adams, the 3-1 favorite in field of 10 3-year-olds "This horse, I really like him. He was working pretty well and today he came with a good run." Advertisement Saez hustled Patch Adams right out of the gate and the pair stalked the pace set by Macho Music and Madaket Road through swift fractions of :22.11, :44.40, and 1:08.73 through six furlongs. While gaining ground near the quarter pole, Patch Adams was hustled to the outside and came charging into contention. He got in front in the final furlong, drew clear. "He was in a perfect spot the whole way," Saez said. "And, man, when he came to the top of the stretch he gave me a pretty good turn of foot.' Time for the seven furlongs 1:21.35 on a track rated as muddy. Patch Adams returned $8.80 for the win. Advertisement Patch Adams earned his first stakes victory Saturday and entered following a 2 1/4-length win sprinting 6 1/2 furlongs on May 3 at Churchill. Under some consideration for the Kentucky Derby earlier this year when he was fourth in a pair of graded stakes on the classic trail. He had, however, shown his preference for sprinting earlier, earning a career-best 98 Beyer Speed Figure for his 10 1/2-length triumph to break his maiden in his second start going the Woody Stephens distance in November at the Louisville track. 'Obviously it took him two starts to break his maiden, but when he did break his maiden he was very impressive at Churchill Downs," Cox said. "We thought he would stretch out based off the way he breezed and how he galloped out and worked with the pace before the [Grade 3] Southwest Stakes. Didn't break that day and didn't really get a good trip in the [Grade 3 Tampa Bay Derby] obviously. It is kind of odd to have a horse that breaks as well as he does going one turn but couldn't get out of the gate going two turns. Once again, horses will make you scratch your head sometimes. We kind of scratched our heads this winter and into the spring, but he turned it around at Churchill Downs and we cut him back and he responded again today." Patch Adams was bred in Kentucky by WinStar Farm, which campaigns him with China Horse Club Inc. "He showed that he's a seven-furlong horse the day he broke his maiden and has been telling us what he wants to do," said Elliott Walden, President, CEO, and Racing Manager of WinStar Farm. Advertisement 'One turn is what he wants to do. He's an Into Mischief out of a Distorted Humor mare (Well Humored); the second Grade 1 winner we have had this year like that along with Tappan Street. Two different types, Tappan Street wants to go longer than this one, but I think he could get a mile. 'We'll probably come back for the [Grade 1, $500,000 H. Allen Jerkens Memorial on August 23 at Saratoga]. He ran kind of quick back here and been at it all year; gone to Oaklawn, gone to Tampa — and he's not a super big horse. He's a special horse. I think he's got more there and will be really tough running back. It's just exciting to win a Grade 1 with a really well-bred colt from the family of [WinStar-owned Dubai World Cup winner] Well Armed — a great family that's been very good to us.' Kentucky Derby 2025: Why Bob Baffert is booed at Churchill Downs
Kentucky Derby 2025: Why Bob Baffert is booed at Churchill Downs Bob Baffert is finally back at Churchill Downs and not everyone is happy about it. The famed horse trainer, who is going for his seventh Kentucky Derby victory on Saturday, is back at the track for the first time since 2021 following a three-year suspension. Churchill Downs punished Baffert after Medina Spirit won the Derby then tested positive for banned substances. Per USA Today: Baffert initially denied any wrongdoing and appealed the suspension through a lawsuit, and Churchill Downs officials extended the suspension another year. But Baffert eventually accepted responsibility for the traces of betamethasone found in Medina Spirit after the 2021 Kentucky Derby in a statement released last year in conjunction with the end of his suspension. That paved the way for Baffert to have two horses in the 151st running of the Kentucky Derby this year. The 72-year-old has, naturally, been a constant presence at the track lately. The fans aren't thrilled. Baffert was audibly booed during the Post Position Draw livestream last week and can probably expect a similar response on Saturday. Despite initially entering two horses into the Derby, only Citizen Bull will lineup in the starting gate in the dreaded No. 1 spot along the rail. The colt is considered a long-shot, but Baffert already found himself in the winner's circle on Saturday with a victory in the third race on the back of Goal Oriented. Baffert took second place in the sixth race with Madaket Road. A win in the day's biggest race would give Baffert a record-breaking seventh Kentucky Derby victory — and a fascinating reception would be likely to follow if it happens.

Kentucky Derby picture remains unclear heading into major races this weekend
Hallandale Beach, Fl. — As racing heads to its final big week of qualifying for the Kentucky Derby, it's becoming clear that there is no overwhelming favorite to win the most famous horse race in the world. Saturday was supposed to help define the field but instead saw the favorites in the Florida Derby and Arkansas Derby lose. For most of the horses, it was their first time going 1 1/8 miles, a furlong short of the 1 ¼-mile Kentucky Derby. Of course, winning your last race before the Kentucky Derby is no guarantee for success as you have to go back to 2017 when Always Dreaming won both the Florida Derby and Kentucky Derby. That is if you discount Justify's performance in the Santa Anita Derby before winning the Triple Crown in 2018. Justify crossed the finish line first in the Santa Anita Derby but was disqualified six years later when it was determined that the California Horse Racing Board mishandled a contamination positive on the colt. Justify, along with six other horses among five trainers, tested positive for jimson weed, which it was believed the horses ingested in their feed. No trainer was sanctioned. This week, the Kentucky Derby field of 20 will mostly be filled barring injuries and one final small-points race at Keeneland on April 12. U.S. horses are competing for 17 of the spots with the remaining spots given to horses from Japan, Europe and the Middle East. If those spots are not filled, U.S. winning horses would complete the field. Highlighting this weekend will be the Santa Anita Derby, in which futures pool leader Journalism will try for his fourth win in a row. The Southern California-based 3-year-old is trained by Michael McCarthy and ridden by Umberto Rispoli. Other races, also worth 100 points to the winner (if the field is six or more) will be the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland and the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct. The first and second-place finishers in those races will most likely have enough points to qualify for the first Saturday in May. Tappan Street, running only his third race, won the Florida Derby on Saturday by 1 ¼ lengths beating favorite Sovereignty followed by Neoequos and Madaket Road. 'Anytime you have a young horse like this and you give them eight weeks between starts, it's always a concern,' said winning trainer Brad Cox. 'But this is a very smart horse. He's intelligent. I thought he would break very, very well today the way he was training, and he did. That put him in the race and put him in a great position.' Cox said if the horse comes out of the race fit, he would ship him to Churchill Downs on Monday or Tuesday. Madaket Road was the lone California-based horse in the race, running for Baffert. He came out of the gate strong, was carried wide on the first turn, led down the backstretch and gave up the lead in the stretch. 'Right now, I just felt like it was a bit far,' said jockey Mike Smith. 'It wasn't like I went overly fast. I thought we got away really well and put him in a great place to kick on. Let me tell you something, those two or three horses in front of us are serious because I was running. I could hear him and I could feel him, and it was getting to him a little bit, but it's not because of a lack of trying. He still kicked.' Madaket Road has 46 Derby qualifying points, which has him 16th in the rankings. However, it's unclear what his next race will be and if he really has a problem with distance, then he may be pointed to the 1 3/16-mile Preakness or an even shorter race. In Arkansas, Baffert had the 4-5 favorite in Cornucopian, but the colt got caught in a vicious speed duel that left he and Speed King out of gas in the stretch. The first quarter-mile went in 22.46 seconds and the half mile in 45.21 seconds. It was then easy for Sandman to win by 2 ½ lengths followed by Publisher, Coal Battle and Cornucopian. 'I couldn't believe [the early fractions],' said winning trainer Mark Casse. 'I said: 'Well, they'll have to be superstars to keep going.' The farther they went, the more confident I was. The faster they went, the more I smiled.' Sandman's stretch run was a bit erratic, lugging out as her approached the finish line. 'I think that [lugging out] just shows how good he is,' Casse said. 'He wasn't focusing and he was still able to draw away. As [jockey] Jose [Ortiz] said, he wants to get into a rhythm. And if you can get him into that rhythm, he'll just go. Jose said he didn't take a deep breath when he pulled up.' John Velazquez, Cornucopian's jockey, was succinct in his analysis. 'Nothing else you can say,' Velazquez said. 'We went fast.' Cornucopian has only 15 qualifying points, putting him in 36th place and well out of Derby contention. As a general rule, 50 points pretty much guarantees you a start in the Derby, with 40 points being near the edge of qualification.
